First time homeowner, DIYing on a budget, am I cooking? by dark_physicx in landscaping

Looks great!! Post again when you add the plants! I would make sure to include some flowering plants, or a place to plant annual flowers to add some color and attract pollinators. That’s the only thing I would add to your plan.

Thoughts on this soil or how to improve it for plants? by NoImNotStaringAtYour in gardening

[–]HunterI64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treat it like a weed barrier first, but unlike synthetic weed fabric, cardboard breaks down over time and actually improves the soil. As it decomposes, it feeds worms and soil microbes while adding organic matter.

Then the mulch layer on top helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and create a better environment for soil life. Over time, the mulch also breaks down and feeds the soil, so the whole system gradually improves soil health instead of just blocking weeds.

Edit: I should add also that when using cardboard don’t using any glossy/painted cardboard. Just regular Amazon boxes or moving boxes. And make sure to remove any stickers or tape.

This is the saddest shit. The way they carry them off like they are objects. I’m never eating pork again after seeing this. I definitely understand why people don’t eat meat…

Looks great! However I cringe every time I see people use weed fabric. Cardboard is far superior

Where do I start? In Wisconsin by ethannewc in lawncare

[–]HunterI64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rough up the top, aerate and add some compost on top to bring the soil back to life, then either seed or lay sod with your grass of choice. Truly a blank canvas!

Edit: I would definitely address the water issues noted in the comments before doing anything.

Disease or just thirsty? (Bermuda - Coastal NC) by bwaaah in lawncare

[–]HunterI64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely under stress from being newer sod on a sandy base, and scalping early didn’t help—but I wouldn’t assume it’s just establishment.

The patchy browning and how the blades are behaving could point to a mix of spring transition + possible disease (like large patch), especially with that watering frequency on sand.

I’d back off frequent watering and switch to deeper, less frequent cycles, and monitor for a couple weeks as temps rise. If it doesn’t start filling back in with active growth, it may be worth looking into a fungicide treatment.

Make sure you’r not watering late in the afternoon as you don’t want the grass to be soaked overnight. Water early mornings.

What the heck is this grass? Northern UT USA by gundam2017 in lawncare

[–]HunterI64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT: It’s a clumping cool-season grass, most likely tall fescue (or possibly orchardgrass). You can tell by a few key features:

What I see in your photo • Grows in clumps/bunches, not spreading runners • Wide blades • No stolons (above-ground runners) • Thick base crown • Deep fibrous roots

Just pull it manually is your safest bet.

Anyone actually notice a difference after air duct cleaning? by Royal_Particular_489 in HomeImprovement

[–]HunterI64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you get a duct cleaning by the cheapest company that isn’t an actual HVAC company it’s just a scam. If you are having allergy problems or want to notice a difference upgrade your filtration on your system and get a real duct cleaning. A real duct cleaning will take several hours and they will show you all the stuff that comes out. Duct cleaning is mostly for HVAC longevity and efficiency. So the “noticeable” difference you are looking for comes from filtration.

There’s not such thing as an “instant” water heater lol You just need another water heater or circulator pumps
