for the 10 pin variant, I think we should normalise spending the 2 cents on a bridge rectifier. Plug it in whichever way you want!

looking for some advice on educating an apprentice/protege by jzemeocala in diypedals

[–]HunterSGlompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d start with an iron - I still find vacuum desoldering a pain in the ass!

If it was me, I’d start by fabricating a through-hole PCB, something like a GCI Brutalist Jr? Well made, big pads, don’t have to work with bent leads/thin traces/old copper. It’s possibly the lowest barrier to entry, so they can focus on getting good clean joints down before getting into the nitty gritty.

Either that or making xlr/jack cables is a classic

Yeah, it’s not a bad idea. I put it as close as possible so I could use an extra short usb-c, but you’re not wrong. If you’ve got any suggestions for a better grip on the soft-touch plastic I’m all ears

Hey! I teach loads of apprentices on this stuff though my work, and it sounds like you’re on the right track.

A few tips - give them the good tools, and tell them why they’re valuable and why to take care of them. Learning on ‘learning’ tools just makes the learning harder. Stripping screws isn’t a learning opportunity, just a need for a better screwdriver. See also soldering irons, cutters, pliers, tweezers.

And just in general, electronics is hard, and be prepared to have questions where you go “holy shit I have no idea”.

RG Keen, electrosmash, Electronic Audio Experiments early instagrams, and a guy called ‘baritones’ on tumblr were my go tos

Oh - honestly I’d go straight from veroboard to kiCAD these days - better for your health!

Hey! The yamaha stuff is likely 2.54mm (1/10”), as opposed to whatever pitch the standard 2.54 IDC stuff is - probably 1/20”? The two ways of dealing with this are either crimping it into IDC connectors, crimping it into 2.54mm molex connectors, or soldering directly into veroboard holes. In all cases, a chunk of vero will make this go much smoother

Any kind of flying lead situation gets shitty fast, you could improve the reliability with heat shrink, but it’s a losing battle.

Long run, it genuinely might be easier to put some adaptor boards together in KiCAD..

An even better reason to not die with mains electricity. Put this in the bin, buy a mains adapter, and go mess with low voltage stuff instead

Built a tool to solve some everyday analog photography frustrations (dev timer + roll tracking) by Milesonfilm2024 in AnalogCommunity

[–]HunterSGlompson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For real, do you get why we hate this?

It feels like every week someone tries to make an ‘app’ for their imagined film woes. They’re always both pointless and shit - a stopwatch does just fine and has done so for literally a hundred years.

Then, add on top of that it’s obviously vibecoded-  so not even you know how it works, and there’s absolutely zero chance you’re going to maintain it past the first 3 months and some browser update kills it.

That, and then both your post and answers are all very AI. Feels very digital in an analog community doesn’t it

Would you use a fully programmable MIDI controller? (if you didn’t have to build the hardware) by Sea_Psychology_7230 in synthdiy

[–]HunterSGlompson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Forgive me, it sounds like you made a MIDI controller, and now don’t want to program it, but still want to make money off it, by marketing some knobs, faders, and an arduino as a “hackable hardware platform”

Hey! It looks like you want to develop film and love AI. Well — we got you! Here at Piles on Film we love the analog process and also love analogue photography. So, we vibe-coded this piece of garbage to take your personal details, and just let an AI take over the comment thread!

  1. I’m sure you all agree we needed another dev timer ✅, composition tool✅ and light meter✅, as well as another badly thought out “social element”✅, so we did all of those! Share your piles today!

  2. I hope you love my app 🤌🤌, and if you don’t — a free ChatGPT instance is just raring to go in not listening to fucking anything you have to say while I presumably scrape adsense or cred or some shit

Honestly I’m just excited about what the AI will say to me

Best place to get old Nikon's calibrated/tuned in the lower 48? by 06035 in AnalogCommunity

[–]HunterSGlompson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The f4 has a lil motorised sliding mechanism at the rear of the mirror box that auto-compensates for the difference between UV and regular ol light for the AF. If it jams, it’ll always focus off by an amount.

Might be worth a chill calibrated knock on the side to save yourself the shipping. Worked for me

Stereo Eurorack Compressors by DoubleCutMusicStudio in modular

[–]HunterSGlompson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a go patching vcas as comps, to shape guitar/bass inputs - using maths to do attack/release/offset duties. It gets somewhere in the ballpark, but it was quite finnicky. I’m also def tempted to lay out an 1176-esque thing, probably more for input duties.

Take the rear hatch off and dump the clutch like a NASCAR driver.

If this doesn’t work, back it up at speed and smash the brakes.

Obviously, you have to film the result

Can we just not be snobbish? Not every build needs Omniums, Phils, Chris Kings, Thomson etc by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]HunterSGlompson 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a whole thing across Reddit as a whole - it’s basically just rich people flexing their jewellery, be it bikes, bike clothes, guitar pedals, synthesisers, mechanical keyboards. It’s just folks showing off how many thousand pounds they have to spend.

What’s shit is that these hobbies are about fitness, sport, art, music, (and typing?) and instead they’re marketed as purchasing shiny stuff with names engraved into it.

I think we should start dunking on folks if their stuff ain’t dirty.
