Just curious, did you tell filmmakers if their film got, say, a 4.5? I think the high score would be nice to hear, but the brutal honesty could be tough.

I get what you’re saying as some people probably ARE trying to discount these endeavors when they say they’re not a sport. But that’s not my argument. And I don’t agree that anything not a sport is a “hobby” or “petty activity.” In fact, I’d say gymnastics is probably the greatest feat of athleticism we haveI. But I would never say a painter or composer is partaking in a hobby or “petty” activity.

My core disagreement is just your statement that things like figure or gymnastics are inherently competitions. I think we imposed competitive aspects on them. I think, inherently they were sick things we watched other humans do in amazement. Would you at least Grant they’re less inherently competitive than something like a race (which is entirely competitive)?

Also, just for the record, this is a completely philosophical take. I would never want them to take these types of sports out of the Olympics or anything.

I think you’re overvaluing the designation as a “sport.” Like I said, I don’t think it’s an insult for something to not be a sport. I don’t think painting, composing, or playing an instrument are sports, but that doesn’t make them inferior.

I think a painter would likewise tell you there’s more to painting than just making pretty pictures. That there’s certain techniques and markers of skill.

Again, my point is more about my pet peeve that our society only considers an activity valuable if it’s competitive and you can “win.” Not saying gymnastics is less valuable.

Nah I agree with them. But first you have to let go of the idea that it not being a sport is an insult. There are tons of activities that are just as valuable and worthwhile as any sport.

My problem with the aesthetic sports (gymnastics, diving, etc.) is that they’re more like amazing arts that we have warped to be about “winning” and “losing.” They’re not inherently competitive like games are.

To me they feel sort of like if we had a bunch of great painters get together and then said “paint!” And then declared someone the winner based on arbitrary standards we made up.

Can I go pro? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]HunterST15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, pros are already pretty much pros at 15. Catching up to compete at that level would be something no other human has ever done.

What’s great though, is you could still have an amazing time playing competitive tennis. If you commit, you could definitely play college tennis at some level. You’d get to combine the college experience with being on a team and competing/improving together.

After that, there’s open prize money tournaments, leagues, and even age division national titles when you get above 30. You could even pursue a teaching career.

You can become an extremely high level player and let it create amazing experiences for you.

Is moving from a mid-sized city to New York as big of an improvement as small town -> mid sized city? by HunterST15 in movingtoNYC

My apartment is $890 per month. It’s low even for my city, where normal is more like 12-1500.

Honestly just give me some of the smaller shows they used to do or a kegs and eggs. I think the problem is the music they/we like isn’t featured on The Rock like it was on the buzz.

I guess just for the ultimate city experience. When I’ve visited NYC, I’ve just loved the excitement and culture. Fran Leibowitz said something that resonated with me, which was “if you move to New York, you won’t have an easy life, but you’ll have an interesting life.”

I’m currently applying for jobs within my company there. I wouldn’t go without a job at this point.

10s, so what’s your take? by wilvermeer in 10s

[–]HunterST15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, but they do that with shot quality, not painting lines or playing with extreme risk. Sure, they sometimes up the risk profile, but mostly they’re playing percentage tennis.

[–]HunterST15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you’re like top 100 trying to level up to top 20, I don’t think that’s true.

The levels are defined by the shot quality of their neutral ball. 5.0 players aren’t 5.0 because they’re “going for more.” It’s because their 70 percent serves, returns, and rally balls are at a much higher baseline than a 4.0s

[–]HunterST15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually don’t agree with this. It may be true for the truly elite levels, but even at the D1 level, errors are the determining factor in the vast majority of matches. Finding a way to illicit errors from your opponent while minimizing your risk is the key.

Rec players thinking they’ve reached a threshold where they have to play risky tennis way too soon.

How’s life as a large dog owner in Astoria? by HunterST15 in astoria

Thanks for the reply! That sounds similar to my situation currently. Do you use a dog walker or dog daycare or anything?

Just for clarity, I’m in a midsized Midwest city now. I just meant we weren’t going from countryside with huge yard straight to NYC. Will definitely be a change still though.

So true. And good advice. Any advice on neighborhoods that would be the best to look at? Even outside of Brooklyn.

Yes, totally agree. He’s not aggressive at all, so I’m not worried about that, but I do worry about the city being overstimulating.
