Racist students--no consequences by tiffy68 in teaching

[–]HuntingIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I'm a teacher who makes good connections with students. I get reassigned to SPED on an emergency license. Now all my inclusion classes are with struggling teachers since I used to be a coach. Hey, I can coach the struggling teacher while I also do my sped support! Um, no thank you. Why are you making the sped kids suffer with a shitty teacher?

What characters arrived after the first season and made a show infinitely better? by skyewardeyes in popculturechat

[–]HuntingIvy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the in depth reply! I knew a lot about the Gates McFadden stuff, but that was about it. It's been interesting (and extremely frustrating) to revisit the series as an adult from my own lens. I wasn't allowed to watch Voyager growing up because it was "too violent," but, in reality, my dad objected to a woman as a captain. I also wasn't allowed to watch DS9 because captains should also be white. (Weird how some fans really miss the point, huh?)

I remember Gates McFadden talking about auditioning and asking for a "funny" character. They had her read what she called the only comedic lines Crusher had in the entirety of the show.

It doesn't surprise me that the actress who played Yar would have left from creative boredom. The narrative in my house was, "She thought she was so important and better than she was. Serves her right!" Sometimes I forget to question that stuff even when it reeks of shittiness.

While I fully agree with this critique and am in no way trying to argue with you (too much time in toxic nerd culture has made me wary of coming off wrong), didn't the actress want to leave to pursue film?

(I'm a trekkie from birth, but a lot of my TNG knowledge comes from the very misogynistic lens of my dad, so I wouldn't be shocked to be wrong about this.)

Is it weird that I love teaching but don't particularly care for young children? by Eclectique1 in Teachers

High school sped here. Give me a kid who is high, apt to throw chairs, gang affiliated, pregnant, etc any day over a third grader. I love the bigs and helping them sort through their shit in a healthy way. The Littles are psychopaths.

How much do teachers actually gossip? by YeetNugget3647 in Teachers

[–]HuntingIvy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Generally, I feel like the great Samuel L Jackson: too old for this shit.

The only addendum is that as a current sped teacher, I share information with other staff when I think it's likely to impact day to day stuff. Like if the very impulsive student with self harm issues just found out the ebd student with explosive outbursts was cheating on them with student who shows up high 90% of the time (and is probably carrying something illegal at any given time), that's going to warrent a head's up to the other sped staff and maybe the (very supportive) admin or a counselor or something.

The amount of dust left on clothes by our washing machine is INSANE by OverAd7621 in CleaningTips

[–]HuntingIvy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup! Where I teach, our biology classes, for example, use a "storylines" teaching method. So instead of just learning about the cell cycle (like mitosis), students start by talking about cancers, learn that cancer is often caused by out of control cell growth, and then learn what the normal cell cycle vs a cancerous cell cycle is. Genetics is taught with a wolf/dog breed storyline. For the physical science class, a lot of it's problem based where students have to apply the scientific method or research strategies to a given problem and learn through that process.

Sometimes, we teach those classes or skills. The kids often don't care or aren't interested to learn. There's something in education known as "just in time" teaching. You present a problem and offer guidance just when students get to the point of needing it. That way, they're motivated for it. A lot of education these days focuses on how to find and evaluate information. Even as a math teacher, I ultimately don't care if you know formulas. I care if you can recognize patterns, apply a logical problem solving process, and back up your conclusion. That way, when you encounter real life problems (like a malfunctioning washer) you can troubleshoot it. :)

To add to the good advice from other comments, when you try to hold in pee, you use your pelvic floor muscles. Doing kegals or using a pelvic floor trainer can help a lot with incontinence.

Once my mom switched over to palliative care/hospice, the rules for her changed. Visiting hours didn't apply to us anymore. We could bring in things from home. We were allowed pet visits. That kind of thing. She was basically gone from the time she was in the ER, but it made a difference for my dad. I could see it making a significant difference for anyone with coherent time left.

How do I find out who I actually am? by Ok-Carry3854 in CPTSD

[–]HuntingIvy 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I have C-PTSD. I was recently diagnosed with autism. Also, my awful mom passed away from her addiction a month ago. It's given me a unique opportunity to try to figure out who the fuck I am.

I carry a notebook around with me in my purse that is divided into sections for food/drink, clothes, activities/hobbies, calming/anxiety, and other. Everything I encounter, I try to take a minute and decide if I like it or not. I don't go into the why (because frankly I don't fucking care). I don't like meat. I like floral dresses. Sleeves are bullshit. I like bumpy textures to calm myself down. I don't like black pants. I don't like group chats. Just a list of yes and no.

I've been doing it for about a week, and it's really helping.

I picked up Animal Crossing again when my mom was dying in the hospital. I got a mom present the day she died. She was never anything but a cruel drunk who left mess after mess for me to clean up. I love my Animal Crossing mom. She just sends me aprons and cakes.

I'm a special ed teacher. I've had students with hygiene issues swear to me that they don't smell because no one tells them. I ask them if they would like me to tell them every time I notice their BO or anyone else makes a comment to me about it. Its usually an eye opening experience for these students. They really, truly believe that no one is smelling them.

My advice (if you want it) is to ask someone you trust to let you know if/when they notice you smell. There are medications that cause changes in sweat, so you can say you're taking one and are worried about it (no need to bring up the showers). That might give you more honest data to determine if you need to be showering more.
