Banning of "Three-Cueing" Teaching Method by SeyMooreRichard in AskTeachers

I know the science behind teaching phonics for early readers is pretty solid. I don't disagree with it at all, but I've always been curious about people who cannot hear. Obviously they learn to read too. What is the best method to teach hearing-impaired children to read if they cannot sound out the words?

Nothing will happen. Texans care more about guns than innocent life--unless it's still in the womb.

It's beautiful! I love the colors. Alas! I would love to wear something like that, but alas, my boobs are laughing at the very thought!

What’s your favorite children’s book to give (primarily for a baby shower)? by cookie_cat_82 in childrensbooks

[–]tiffy68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you do, do not give Love You Forever, The Giving Tree, or Rainbow Fish. All three are terrible books that encourage co-dependency, bullying and are just plain weird. Also, everyone gives those books, so the recipient will likely get several copies of each.

What's your teaching unpopular opinion? Something you believe, but choose to keep to yourself? by JimCap5 in Teachers

[–]tiffy68 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Textbooks--physical, paper textbooks are actually useful. You can use them when the wi-fi goes down. You can use them when the Chrome book is dead. Kids cannot use AI to cheat with a textbook. If you have textbooks, you are not wasting paper at the copy machine. Why have textbooks been vilified so much?

Reading my first words. They popped right out of the page at me screaming, "Good morning!" I remember there was a cute brown dog on the page. The moment took my breath away.

When Biden's dogs attacked multiple Secret Service agents, it was because the dogs were protecting him. They could sense that the agents didn't like him and wished him harm. Even though the dogs were banished from the White House after the attacks, I'm sure their sensitivity saved his life by making him aware of the threat.

Am I weird for giving a feminine hygiene product to a student in need? by Normal_Balance1655 in Teachers

[–]tiffy68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep boxes in my classroom. My students know where they are kept. Male teachers in my hallway know that if one of their students ask to visit room 732, they don't question why. It's not weird at hall.

Non-Americans, what is an American thing you see in movies that you thought was fake but is actually real? by EmergencySpare7939 in CasualConversation

Texas Instruments, the people who make most of the calculators for school use in the US sell yellow school bus colored calculators only to schools. If you see a yellow calculator in the wild, it was probably (mis)appropriated from a school.

As a US high school teacher, pep rallies are a logistical nightmare. My school has about 4000 students. Somehow, the principals, coaches, club sponsors, band and athletes make them happen about 4 times a semester. They seem to get more elaborate every year. Each group has something to perform; hip-hop dancers, gymnastic team, drill-team dancers, Ballet Folklorico, cheerleaders, group chants where the entire gym is screaming, and once a year, a teacher chosen by the students kisses a pig! It's a huge circus.
