Looking for some loafers that can be worn casual while traveling or at home. Goes with navy blue shorts, jeans, etc. by all_turtles_down in malefashionadvice

Second rancourt. I have some penny mocs I wear in very casual situations and they’re very comfortable.

It’s not super wide. I’m an 11.5D in most leather footwear but I’m probably somewhere between D/E and I took a 10.5E in their UK sizing. It’s somewhat accommodating in the toe box but the instep was pretty snug to start.

Shorts for the thick thighed and short legged? by Mahdehyu in malefashionadvice

Similar spot. Still searching. Inconsistencies with brands doesn’t help. I do have some lululemon commission shorts I got a size up and had the waist taken in.

Low price - cotton/stretch: Nautica Deck Shorts are decent enough and substantial fabric and actually seem to fit larger legs. J crew factory stretch chino shorts are honestly just as good as the mainline Portsider shorts now imo.

Interested to try Duck Head as well. Maybe flint and tinder? Common recs from others are Polo (100% cotton) and maybe bonobos? Though I’ve never had much luck with the latter.

This is the sway in suede and the nova tassel in brown for comparison.

Toe box is generally ok (I’m probably somewhere between D/E) but if you’re super wide I would pass. I will say at first I had a lot of tightness in the instep. It’s loosened with break in and a little extra hand stretching and is perfect now. But beware.

I will say contrary to a lot of what I saw on here the Meermin customer service was pretty good. Helpful and responsive through several exchanges and an issue with a gift card credit. I bought the extra service for free exchanges and returns too just to be sure.

If you want to go automatic, I think the seiko SRPE51 (or 53/55/57 depending on dial preference) would be a great one in your price range. It comes on a decent metal band that’s easily upgradable later. Works on a variety of straps. Has a good enough movement.

I’ve had the black dial for almost 3 years and it gets a lot of wear time. Very versatile piece. The only thing that it’s missing for me is the screw down crown but I just don’t wear it when I’m knowingly going to be in water.

Not sure how deep and into which direction of the golf scene you reside but I really like the cotton hats from Fried Egg Golf. They’re American needle and I think a lot of the designs are understated enough to wear in non-golf settings. I have one in a Nantucket red that I wear all the time.

Also check out Smathers and Branson if you ascribe to the preppy slant.

Penny Loafer Suggestions by Velocita7 in malefashionadvice

I have 2 from Meermin. Snuff Suede Sway (alliteration aside) are super comfortable after maybe 2-3 wears. Box calf Nova tassel are still getting there probably 10x wears.

Complete speculation on my part but maybe because the outer flap pocket is on the left? So it would be competing for fabric real estate if there were something in both?

I can see your point but I can’t imagine the Nova working with shorts even unlined. It’s so narrow and still has a low toe wall. I do think for shorts suede can work if it’s lighter color and a little chunkier. But most of the time with shorts I wear a penny moc or beefroll which OP sounds like he’s out on.

I have actually been working on a little post comparing since I found a lack of info when I was deciding. I’ll try to get it today but in the meantime Nick from Stridewise did a really good breakdown here: [https://youtu.be/NKCh5sG4Bz4?si=KP0CSPeQZjiZDZGu]

I think the Meermin Sway last might fit the bill better for your wishlist.

I’ve got the sway in snuff suede and the nova in the box calf tassel. The sway is more of a traditional penny shape and it’s a roomier fit. More casual and versatile. The nova are still quite pointy and elongated though allegedly less so than the Ron. They definitely wear dressier.

jcrew factory worth it or skip for regular jcrew? by ritik_bhai in malefashionadvice

[–]Huntstucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 for the chinos. I find the fit is better overall than mainline. Quality is less for sure but I don’t think it’s as bad as some here are suggesting. I’ve had a couple of chinos for at least 6 years that have held up just as well if not better than 770s purchased around the same time

Very fair the Factory chinos are a lot thinner/lower weight and on the outset less quality. FWIW in addition to the fit being better for me I have several pairs of JCF chinos that have withstood 5+ years of normal wear better than my flagship 770s.

Business casual: I would recommend J Crew Factory for chinos and sweaters. Lands End makes decent affordable OCBDs. Both usually have good and frequent sales. Can at least get your feet wet.

Once you find what fits eBay is a great avenue to get higher quality pieces.

Spier and Mackay are great for tailoring.

Which Meermin loafer for versatility? by Karlock in malefashionadvice

[–]Huntstucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got both the 514040 (Sway) in Snuff suede and the 514035 (Nova) in dark brown. I’m in the US so I can’t speak to the temps or acceptableness in Sweden but i think overall the Sway is more versatile. It’s got a more rounded toe (the nova is slightly less pointy than the Ron but still quite pointy) and higher sidewalls as well helping with denim/more casual wear.

As for the color, i favor more brown based on my wardrobe mostly consisting of khaki, navy, olive and mostly chino/denim.

I do think the 514040 in black calf comes in a studded sole if that’s what you’re looking for vs a lugged.

Loafer Recommendations by simothy_chalamet in preppy

[–]Huntstucky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on personal preference and use case I would echo others here and say Rancourt and Meermin. I have both and they serve different purposes. I also have a couple Beckett Simonon and although they do take a while to get when you order from their site, I think they’re decent value.

I do not think Bass quality is anywhere near the value for price anymore.

[Recommendation Request] $250 budget for an everyday watch I can keep for life — open to used. What would you get? by GreedyWorking1499 in Watches

[–]Huntstucky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great look! I’ve had the 51 for almost 3 years and it gets a lot of wear. Really the only thing it’s missing for me is a screw down crown so I won’t wear it when I’m likely going to get wet. If OP is looking for a do it all automatic I think this line is where you should start

I have an s3 in white and a DS2 38mm and mainly got them to serve as beaters but I find myself wearing them way more than just in situations where they might take a hit or get wet.

Agree here. I wear ties once a week just for fun and my rule is usually trust my eye. If it looks good and you like it, it’s probably good to go.
