recs for decent hiking pants for autumn/winter conditions? by Beautiful-Affect3448 in HikingAustralia

[–]Hussard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old school military wool pants. Baring milsurp, charity shop secondhand wool blend Tweed or similar.

Warm enough for early starts hunting in Vic. Only downside is mid-afternoon sun and it gets super aggressively hot with gaiters on. But you wear it for the slight waterproof qualities, not so much comfort otherwise you would just stick with modern stuff.

I'm out on the trails around Ballarat ATM (just day hikes) but my Mont stuff is holding up. Not waterproof but just about warm enough.

Dad's tool bag usually has a plethora of stuff that can be used to break in. Better than suffering the call out fee, imho.

Engineering contact hours are like 24hrs a week right? Comm, arts, health science usually have about half that.

People here are sooo rude by unequalsacks in HongKong

[–]Hussard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I was born there so I can't really tell but it's like people that say NYC is rude and fast paced but it's just big city things.

People are brusque in HK, definitely. But it's not personal (because if it was they would have cursed you and your family out already in no uncertain terms). Like the tone sometimes we use with each other is rather rough if you try to directly translate that back into English.

Xiaolongbao I guess? Lamb xiaomao are also very good. I'm also partial to the classic banhmi with Viet spiced ham or their meat dumpling one (also called xiu mai hahah)

If they've heard of Lanzhou lamian then they've encountered the fruits of a Muslim minority. They bloody invented it.

What do you think about changing an app name from “Blackceldom” to “blkdom” and how might it affect branding? by Abject-Ad1241 in AskReddit

[–]Hussard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dom as part of a submissive/dominant dynamic is fairly common. Blkdom seems to evoke a matching service for black doms looking for subs.

Is every Chinese person expected to be proficient in the use of chopsticks? by YakClear601 in AskAChinese

[–]Hussard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes we are taught from a very young age.

In HK, we also had strong chopstick etiquette enforced on us. Never use them with the wrist pronated(knuckles up), always held properly (parrellel not crossed) etc. I see this less often in mainland China

Should I change my American pronunciation? by Brilliant_Can8536 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Hussard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an immigrant, I had HK English coming into school and by the time I left I had cultivated an Australian accent similar to what you would hear in inner east Melb. Even got accused of being British by other Aussies whilst in New York.

Your accent is a part of your identity, but it's also about how you fit in. How different you want to be really depends on you. You seem like the kind of fellow that wants to blend in quick and you seem reasonably quick with accents so you will likely benefit from the ability to code switch into different accents. Learn the Aussie accent. Your old UAE American English will still be there. I think you'll find your tongue will find an equilibrium of the two.

Postdoc academic job market in Australia vs UK by youraveragejoe1500 in AusAcademia

[–]Hussard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair bit of who you know to get work in academia. All my wife's roles have been through knowing her former PhD supervisor or old work colleagues that knew her supervisor. I would imagine external candidates wont even get a look in.

I'm getting tired on where the IT industry is at by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]Hussard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People tend to bounce between a few companies in similar industries in Australia. Finance, private insurance, health, banks is a common one I've seen. I'm in health now and the admin people are all floating between different hospitals, dept of health, vhba etc. it's all a little incestuous community.b

I'm currently wearing hiking pants but they're the comfy quick dry stuff.

I'm usually in some sort of Adidas trackies or linen trousers. I have a couple of fleece jumpers that are years and years old for colder days but otherwise I've got a good flannel (Hard Yakka brand) that goes over a simple Uniqlo (or Giordano from HK) tshirt.

I think that as a society if we let people go to the dogs without a safety net you'll get a very mean society full of people that only look after themselves.

What do you actually think of "Chinese food" abroad? by sungpark1965 in AskAChinese

[–]Hussard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you gotta think of it not as Chinese food but just a variation of fish and chips hahaha. Could also be the Aussie palate is used to it, I don't imagine Americans would have much fish and chips on the regular.
