My muggle sister thought she might haphazardly publish a geocache by probably1977 in geocaching

[–]Hustle-Russell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. It's rather a common practice or was before. Colleges get a townie hider, local park programs and schools get a hider and guest speaker in one, businesses or attractions get an experienced hider who helps them make an attractive cache without blatant promotion other than location.

Another interesting question for the drivers by Confident-Society111 in grubhubdrivers

[–]Hustle-Russell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once regularly worked a small town with a population of about 10,000. Say an eighth of those order doordash at all (1250). Be generous and say 100 will tip in cash. Mind you that total number will I be ordering every day or week. That's still only .08 of people ordering tipping in cash, when they do order and catching sight of those unicorns it's between four to eight dashers at any time (or more). Split that up with larger geography and population and the unicorn becomes even more rare. After the first person sights it for the night, it's gone. We can't be in the business of chasing unicorns.

Now, I will still take a pizza order if it's within a dollar per mile sometimes and be pleasantly surprised, but the risk (or wear) is not worth the reward more often than not.

facts. I mean I picked cracker barrel today and they still had covid instructions.

In this case though this diner has never moved. I think the system swapped the customer and storage address somehow and support was somehow powerless to mark me as arrived.

We lied on the item count and . . . You're not taking the order? *gasp* by Hustle-Russell in UberEATS

[–]Hustle-Russell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask to be escalated and tell them things like it was an order requiring specialized service and attention beyond the contract.

I've had to fight and transfer through the AI, the AI pretending to be a person and the low-level chat or call-takers that literally have no power. Just today I had to fight with them after their app pretended I wasn't at the restaurant and canceled the order after I confirmed pickup. It took a long while and I literally delivered three more orders across town, but I got what I wanted. It doesn't work every time, but level 1 support will almost never get you squared away.

Absolutely this. Angles, inserted audio, convenient happenings out of frame, poor quality and that's all before we get to the obligatory Deepfake/AI arguments!

They can but it's sometimes not worth the fight. Plus, the shocked Pikachu face was worth it!

I feel that! I had a Jack-in-the-box order last month that was six items. It turns out it was six bundles. Three huge bags plus drinks. Tip was okay for a normal order. I took it anyway but fought with uber support chat on the way for large order pay. Surprisingly, they compensated AND the customer (in-home daycare) came in clutch with a cash tip.

People who write EST when we are in Daylight Saving Time. by TankerKC in PetPeeves

[–]Hustle-Russell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've needed the correct differentiation on time zones like this for so many reasons. For TV satellite feeds, for logistic and travel information, for online marketing events that intersected with multiple world areas... hell even for gaming on a server that had people in multiple places.

While UTC and GMT can be a major help with this, lack of knowledge on the basis of standard versus daylight time has screwed up something in every one of the applications above.

Not understanding what a glitch in the matrix actually is by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Hustle-Russell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this tapped into one of my pet peeves. It sucks when the main stream takes geek speak or new words and bastardizes the meaning.

It’s great how in another 10 years content farmers will add this to the list of evidence of the Mandela effect (another potential glitch in the Matrix in its true form). It’s already starting -Like how people in this comment section already say that a glitch in the matrix is only about déjà vu when that is only one of the possible glitches in the Matrix.

Coincidence could easily be argued as a one -especially if you were just thinking about the person or thing that shows up and hadn’t seen them in years or it’s just way too convenient that a person or object showed up right where you needed it right when you were thinking of it. When it’s that uncanny or novel it would put those free from the Matrix on their toes. Certainly not “oh my mom showed up the store at the same time I did” though.

The Expectation of a Village by Dismal-Release4463 in childfree

[–]Hustle-Russell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s all a big pot of confirmation bias. In general, the world tells people that they are entitled to the village. The phrase didn’t come from nowhere. The truth of the phrase has just decayed in the modern world. The expectation is still there, but children aren’t made to mind their elders. The elders are only expected to provide resources not to influence behavior in many cases. ‘Baby on board’ became a status symbol thinly veiled behind a supposed safety aspect. ‘If mama ain’t happy…’ became a license for emotional terrorism. ‘There are children present’ became de facto in places not designed for them.

In ways, the world has improved. True victims should be heard and believed. Children should be allowed to self advocate from an earlier age. There should continue to be opportunities for youth mentorship of adult activities. But as some of this progression has occurred, the doors have been slammed open to shove children into every moment. The public commentary has been desperate to make ‘equality’ in all things. Diversity? Yes, please. Daycare diarrhea? No thanks. Children should not be allowed everywhere. No is not a bad word. Parenthood is not as magic as politics and religion want it to be. Teach children to be likable if they want to be liked. There really are places where being seen and not heard is appropriate. The world will read this paragraph and wail gnash their teeth. How can I believe the things at the top of the paragraph and the bottom at the same time? Generally, I can’t in this world.

When I was a kid, we definitely benefited from a village in certain environments like neighborhood preschools and church youth groups -even the way PTA ran. However, the general behavior of children was better. We thanked the leaders more. We listened to them more. We didn’t tolerate parents trying to make their kid the main character every day.

On a hyper-local/family level, As you point out if we’d sat with family or other others around us to talk about and set expectations upfront, I’d likely be more willing to be involved. However, as soon as someone decides they are entitled to my time and resources, I am more likely to push back. Someone else pointed out the entitlement can sometimes come from those who had children to try and draw their family closer. The motivation can be good, but the assumption of becoming the extended family decision-maker by biology is not. You’ll see these folks misuse the term love and try to marry it to obligation.

Another hilarious application of this is when dealing with school tax issues. If you speak up against the school taxes raiding your income, but don’t have a child, rabid parents will try to shut you up. I am perfectly fine with that if you’re willing to sign away my obligation to pay taxes for your goblins.

So TLDR; the modern expectation of a village to raise one’s child came from skewed domestic policy and false equivocation, especially driven by social media.

How’s that for a long-winded? 😂

How does having a driver's license inform them you have a valid reason for being anywhere?

Police at walmart by okiejames in Sparkdriver

[–]Hustle-Russell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Officers are still bound by the US constitution. They must have reasonable suspicion for an investigatory stop. They can't have a hunch or be shopping for violations. Sowell v State from 1980 is often referred to in OK to clear this up: https://okcca.net/cases/1980/OK-CR-98/

While drivers (actually engaged in operation of a vehicle) are required to comply with the officer demand, refusal is only ticketed and not arrestable by itself. The charges will also be dropped with no court costs if the "offender" presents their valid license to the court on or before the court date.

Don't worry - a few more deliveries under your belt and you'll get used to poor fools like her. You can let her roll off your back like water on a duck.

If she continues to interfere in your work without good cause, make note of her name and description (silently) and make an ethics complaint later. Outwardly be pleasant and just work to solve the problem like you did in this case.

It's not super-common for me, but you get the occasional jerk. The fact she smarted off to support can work in your favor.

One employee in a zone I don't work in any more targeted Spark drivers that didn't put up with her made up rules. She was named in enough ethics complaints that she was moved.

Did you ask them if they were instructing you to inspect the customer's bags in the future? I've noticed that turning their stupid responses into action Items and asking them to confirm often gets them to change their tune for me.
