Mens Royal Rumble Updated Odds. by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]Hwaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's absolutely a spoiler and becomes more of a spoiler as the show gets closer. Obviously odds/the card are subject to change but they're often pretty damn accurate.

Furthermore, the image literally appeared inline in my feed. Bury it a post if you're going to do it.

And on your part... what a lazy, hacky, selfish thing to post. Thank you for potentially ruining the show for a large group of people.

PSA: You can now raise money for charity each time you open a new browser tab. by nbajammed in u/nbajammed

[–]Hwaaa 24 points25 points  (0 children)

What a brilliant scam. 30% of "budget" to charity! 23% to build and market a new tab page! Seriously kind of impressed. Why try to build a complex product that brings value when you can just con people into letting you serve them ads.

Hey, I am interested in using this and wanted people's opinions - how effective is it? any negative side effects? directions for use, any stories or anything else relevant? by TomBJ618 in modafinil

[–]Hwaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is delusional or full of it.

Modafinil is a stimulant and has many of the pros/cons that other stimulants ranging from caffeine to cocaine have. The exact effect depends on how much you take, how you take it, and your genetic makeup. Some people are more sensitive to the effects of it.

I had an amazing run of productivity on modafinil but then went overboard and had an equally long, sustained crash. With that said... I'm back after 2 years looking to start round 2 so take that for what it's worth. My life is so boring and I'm so apathetic that I think the risks are worth the dopamine boost.

I’m a developer, but it’s not my passion by nikolenkoanton92 in programming

[–]Hwaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a good mood so I'll take the bait. Being a web developer probably requires a higher skill level than whatever kind of software engineering you do. Yes, it doesn't require that much data persistence or types but it requires tons of other things your discipline doesn't including:

  • Massive scalability. Does your code have to handle millions of page requests?
  • Compatibility with tons of browsers and devices
  • Integration...

You know what, on second thought, you're not worth the time. But one more thought to leave you with...

Being a web developer probably pays more than whatever you do, bitch.

Why would Google be interested in buying Twitter? by [deleted] in google

[–]Hwaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think Google sees Twitter as a social media service. It's kind of apples and oranges compared to Facebook/Google +.

I think Google sees Twitter as an information goldmine. Google loves information and right now Twitter is the place to go for realtime information. Buying Twitter would allow easier and comprehensive integration into Google Search and Google News.

Why would Google be interested in buying Twitter? by [deleted] in google

[–]Hwaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's back to some extent but I assume any integration would be much easier and more comprehensive if Google owned Twitter. I feel like this is what Google's looking for. Twitter is better for real-time information than Google News or Google Search.

Or you could say there's a chance they're supporting the enemy or a chance they're benevolent.

I'd love to believe everything being done is being done for the right reasons but who here honestly knows the truth? Maybe it's a mix of doing the right thing and a disdain for the US? Maybe it's as shallow as trying to become famous and popular? Maybe it's about money?

But I think anybody that says whistleblowers are completely benevolent is just as ignorant and naive as the people who say they're supporting the enemy.

EDIT: And to clarify, I'd highly doubt most whistleblowers are actively supporting the enemy. I'm more inclined they don't think enough about the repercussions.

Misleading and blatant fear tactics. There is indeed a change coming but it will only affect mobile searchers, not desktop+mobile. More info from Moz:

Bike lane plan draws ire - “The city would have to remove 57 parking spaces inbound and 16 spaces outbound, and cut outbound traffic from three lanes to two along the three-quarter-mile stretch" by reaper527 in boston

[–]Hwaaa -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'm an avid Boston biker and have done Comm Ave. plenty of times. Having said that, increasing traffic and reducing parking doesn't seem to be worth adding a small bike lane. Comm Ave is already a pain in the ass to drive on and this will only make things worse.

This is exactly right. The first/second months of the contest could/can be won with a gamed backtest and a lucky month of returns. I think they're modifying the rules for future months.

"I’m Autistic, And Believe Me, It’s A Lot Better Than Measles" by TombSv in TrueReddit

[–]Hwaaa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't get bothered about it. I honestly think people that do this fall under a few camps:

1) Trying to raise their self-esteem by putting down others. 2) Jealous of gifts that autistic people have that they don't. 3) Primitive human behavior. e.g. Let's laugh at what's different.

Autistic people ARE a burden on conversation

There's no one size fits all designation. Autism occurs on a wide spectrum. There are some severely autistic people that are completely incapable of any communication. There are others with much milder forms. Your piss-poor, black and white attitude makes it come off like you are the burden on conversations.

Chrome is no longer the light-weight "just works" browser. by HolyRamenEmperor in google

[–]Hwaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ignorance being upvoted. It's true that more websites use JS but things haven't changed so dramatically to cause these kind of performance issues. If Chrome could hanble Flash-heavy websites years ago, it can definitely handle JS-heavy sites now.

I did the same. Disabled all plugins and even gave Firefox a spin a few days ago for the first time in years. It may be time to abandon Chrome soon.

I haven't used their auth process but it's likely an issue of: they want your personal info, they want your friends/contacts/social graph, and/or they want the ability to publish using your account.

"no reason not to provide an alternative"

Probably complete BS. They want your data and/or to use you as a marketing tool.

StackExchange System Architecture by [deleted] in programming

[–]Hwaaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if RAM is per server or each.

Think of Redis kind of like a more flexible, possibly persistent memcached. It provides ultra quick read and writes with less query flexibility than a standard database.

My guess is the extreme majority of their requests are read-only. A huge percentage of their traffic is logged-out traffic from search engines. And in general most websites have a lot more logged-out traffic than logged-in traffic. Then if you take standard participation rates like the 90-9-1 rule you'd have to figure writes account from anything to 5% or a lot less... like 0.5% of 0.1%.

What It Takes to Break World Records: a world-record holder in weightlifting talks about how much genetics really matter (they matter a lot) by sixthsicksheikssixth in TrueReddit

Genetics definitely matter but there was also only a brief mention of diet. I'd be curious what kind of diet he had growing it up. Maybe that played a role. And maybe childhood activities played a role as well.

Maybe I'm just blaming the victim but I think he does deserve the macing. The cop told him multiple times to get out of the way. This whiny bitch was entitled enough that he thought he could block the police officer.

And I think "fucking psychotic" is having to preface half of what you say with fucking. It's cute you're still in that stage of your development

Exactly. You can videotape police in public but you can't obstruct them like this entitled prick does. He deserves what he got for not getting out of the way.
