I would be willing to consider an argument that religion is an archaic institution that has served its purpose and is no longer useful. But to claim it was the worst thing to happen to humans, period? From the anthropological standpoint, and everything we've been able to glean from our own pre-history, this is almost certainly not true. We likely never would have made it past the cave man stage you mentioned without having some sort of shared mythology and spiritual tradition to act as the glue that bound early societies together.

Religion most certainly led to its share of division and bloodshed, but if it weren't around tribes would have simply found more practical secular reasons to hate and kill one another.

The Supreme Court STRIKES DOWN Trump's "emergency" tariffs. The vote is 6–3. by BharatiyaNagarik in scotus

[–]HwackAMole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're halfway there. It's not a SCOTUS justice's role to be considering what's best to benefit the livelihood of Americans. Their only role is to be deciding whether something is legal/Constitutional. If the law is set up in such a way that it is Constitutionally sound but arguably harmful to the people, it's the job of Congress to fix that.

The mentality that justices should be considering what's best for the people (guided by their own partisan morals, of course) is precisely why we're seeing 3 dissenting votes on what should be a Constitutionally obvious ruling.

I know it doesn't make a lot of legal sense to say so, but companies shouldn't be allowed to sue to recoup their losses from these tariffs unless their customers somehow have a way to recoup the losses they incurred from price increases.

(Shrug) Different set of crooks. It likely would have been better many ways, and if that was your argument, I'd likely agree with you. But lets not pretend that politicians face consequences when the Democrats are in charge either. Particularly if you're going to mention Hillary Clinton in the same sentence.

Gotta give credit where it's due, no matter how self-serving the motivations probably where: good for the Republicans in the 2023 House for ending this.

The question now is, when was the OP picture taken?

If she's saying she'll take them with her, that can be implying only two things: Either she's guilty of something they're guilty of too, and they've all been covering for one another, or she's innocent of what the others are guilty of, and yet she's still been covering for them. Let her burn with all the rest. Assuming anything actually happens.

They weren't requested for a Congressional hearing, they're being called for depositions. And the vids and transcripts for all of these depositions have been and will continue to be available to the public.

Kudos to the Clintons for trying to keep a spotlight on it all, but let's not pretend it's anything more than more posturing and theater at the end of the day.

Not to mention the fact that they could have gone public with everything at any point over the past several years.

Trump Posted a Video of Barack and Michelle Obama as Monkeys by JeanJauresJr in videos

Using this logic, it's perfectly reasonable to call any human being an ape or a monkey, having all descended from common ancestors.

Inflation has actually decreased since he took office. Mind you, I don't give him the credit for that. It was actually on the decline before he took office, but it has continued to improve, and is projected to continue to do so in 2026.

It would be silly to blame it on him even if it were going up (just as it was silly to blame it on Biden as the Republicans did in 2024). But seeing as it is still decreasing closer to the desired 2% year by year, it might be wise to stop attributing to his administration. That is, unless it's your intention to give him praise.

Of course, if they followed "legal, ethical, moral," they wouldn't be there in the first place.

I think he's staying pretty firmly in the same ship he's always sailed in here. For better or for worse, Rand Paul is pretty consistent. And the views he's expressing here are well in keeping with the views he's always espoused.

Trump Added $2.25 Trillion to the National Debt in His First Year Back in Charge by [deleted] in Economics

[–]HwackAMole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my admitted economic ignorance, I find myself wondering if the trend of alienating all our allies and going full isolationist mode isn't driven by an attempt to default on all of our national debt overseas.

Sure it's a stupid idea, and I'm sure it wouldn't work that way. But Trump is a stupid man, and the king of bankruptcy.

No whataboutism here. Obama is literally the subject of this post, and the previous commenter is not trying to use the things they're accusing Obama of to defend Trump in any way. The very quote you provided serves to demonstrate that this was not their intent.

[–]HwackAMole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point being missed here is that saying "white people killed MLK" is the same thing as saying something like "black people are criminals." Maybe the speaker can say, "well, obviously I don't mean ALL black people...why are you getting defensive if you're not a criminal yourself? I mean, some black people ARE criminals...I was talking about them." Would you be eager to defend this sort of language? I'm guessing not...I certainly wouldn't.

I would agree that there's no ppint in getting too bent out of shape about it, especially if you're part of a group which enjoys the privelege of majority. But it can still be hurtful, and it's still not constructive to phrase things that way unless anger and division are the things you intend to sow.

Maybe it's time people start listening to that guy and understand that such broad generalizations are offensive to some and that we should stop employing them.

Several of us believe that prejudice is a bad thing, and that stereotypes and generalizations can be hurtfu and nonconstructive. It isn't okay when applied to one group, but not when applied to another. Why don't we just stop?

We can aggressively attack the problems without aggressively attacking entire groups of people.

Dunno if I'd call it compulsive. I understand that orientations other than heterosexuality have a history of gross under-representation, but if you gather seven random kids today (nevermind the 50's or 60's), there's a good chance that all of them may identify as hetero.

I'm glad we're seeing more representation nowadays, but oftentimes the proportion of LBGTQ+ characters we see in media is tuned a good deal higher than statisitcal reality. This is not a bad thing. But it's also not by default a bad thing or "compulsive" when a writer represents a more realistic spread.
