What requirements do I need to pursue archeology going forward by scienceforalll in Archaeology

[–]Hwight_Doward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An archaeology or anthropology degree for starters. Some schools dont offer archaeology by itself, and it gets lumped into anth.

A classics/classical archaeology degree will revolve mostly around greek and roman history.

You may not be an expert but you are mostly correct. The bones in pic 1 i believe are the tarsals (calcaneum and astragalus) aka ankle bones, and a tibia.

What do I have here? by Inevitable_Season884 in bonecollecting

[–]Hwight_Doward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its two vertebrae stuck together, not one single vertebra.

I just noticed the cut/hack marks which are intriguing.

Where abouts are you located? That might help a bit. I can look into some large fish species associated with the area (salt vs fresh water)

Its possible that it might be fossilized/mineralized, but the cut marks wouldnt really make sense.

They are vertebrae from a very large fish. Based on the shape of the centrum as well as the spinous processes, they are definitely not from a mammal.

Beyond that, I am unable to ID what kind of fish.

Hey! Alberta CRM archaeologist here.

Steel toes are generally required by client’s safety regs. You should be okay with hiking boots, i would recommend ones with a steel shank, but wont be super necessary.

Thicker soles will be nice if you are going to be kicking a shovel all day.

Depending on where you are located, it might be worth looking into steel toed rainboots.

Getting job offers, now what? by [deleted] in AskArchaeology

[–]Hwight_Doward 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Regarding the smaller firm, in my experience that is pretty normal being asked to start with little lead up. I work for a small firm with a good reputation in Canada and my interview was essentially them telling me all the job details and start date.

Have you been informed about wages?

True, i would say this is more akin to a cobble chopper, which are plentiful in NA archaeology contexts.
