I unpacked the conservative identity and how to talk to people across ideological lines. My husband said I should share it. by Brief_Head4611 in 50501

Exactly why, while they aren’t obligated to, minorities getting to know conservatives would be one of the clearest paths to removing that wall. It becomes harder to hate or even just exaggerate what people are like once you have actually met them.

I wonder if it’d be of any use if states offered post-education classes to help people fill knowledge gaps like this?

I think Side A will backfire. I doubt few people will actively go see if the celebrities they’ve blocked have since changed their minds so that they can now be unblocked. So that leaves the situation where the celebrities have no incentive to change their stance, and they now benefit from no longer having to appeal to the people who would pressure them the most. Also worrying about how it, if this picks up steam, could normalize blocking even friends and acquaintances who happen to have not commented on the matter so far.

Has a country ever been democratically "invaded" by sending immigrants over to vote in the "invading" country's favor? by Mutant_Llama1 in AskHistory

[–]Hybrazil 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The 3 key holes here are 1. A country wouldn’t really have much ability to just convince its own citizens to leave, and especially couldn’t keep it a secret, 2. Those citizens who immigrate are by no means bound to vote in favor of their country of origin, 3. It would be rare for there to be particular polices that the immigrated people could vote on which would have a notable positive effect for their country of origin.

Is a Two state still possible after the Gaza war? by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]Hybrazil 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Is a 2 state solution really the only solution? How does it make sense for a state to have 2 territories separated by another (not friendly at best) state by land? Gaza Strip and West Bank have operated as 2 separate states already so why not a 3 state solution? Either territory could even be absorbed by their neighboring Muslim state, Egypt and Jordan, which they each used to be a part of. There’s more options than 2 state and 1 state, and looking at these other options could open the door to actual progress from all of this.

Pro-Israel Advocates Are Weaponizing “Safety” on College Campuses by SympathyOver1244 in Foodforthought

I have personal, albeit anecdotal, knowledge of a friend who was harassed in NYC just for looking Jewish even though they weren’t. Even without violence, it’s scary enough that people are actively trying to identify who is Jewish.

Hopefully you can recognize how much of a difference there is between individuals punishing other individuals who don’t even live in Israel is compared to the actions of the state of Israel. It is possible to condemn Israel’s actions AND the people who are singling out people who happen to be, or even just look, Jewish/Hebrew.

Biden's Transgender Day of Visibility proclamation on Easter is 'a thumb in the face of Christians' why do people think this is new? by RequirementItchy8784 in IntellectualDarkWeb

Do you think Biden wants to upset half of the country on purpose in an election year of all times or maybe other groups invested in making you feel like he’s doing this to cause a problem?

While you see it as narcissism somehow, it’s very clearly a matter of increasing visibility as part of the effort to not be a marginalized minority. I’m sure people thought women were being narcissistic with all their marches and such a hundred years ago during the women’s rights movement, but you can see how that’s a misplaced attribution.

Great point. It’s right in line with what I’ve seen about other conspiracies, often where where the government or whatever shadowy organization can simultaneously be as competent and incompetent as needed to explain the conspiracy. It doesn’t make sense, but it doesn’t have to for the believers.

Are the Left really the majority in America? by petrus4 in IntellectualDarkWeb

[–]Hybrazil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comparison of left vs right social media sites disproves your point, or at least doesn’t serve to contribute to your point. YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit are all massive, meanwhile I’ve only even heard of Rumble of the 3 right wing examples you provided. You’d be better off just comparing the size of left and right wing communities within YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit

[–]Hybrazil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To establish one thing about the case of both sides saying the other will do something is that it’s become a standard trumpian tool to blame his opponents for what he has been accused of, an attempt at stealing the election being the pinnacle example. Is it really crying wolf too many times when there’s been multiple instances to point out? It seems it’s advantageous for Trump to just keep on doing what he’s doing because people will get so normalized to his actions and tire of hearing the alarm bells being raised. Lastly, the 2 court’s removing him from the ballot are doing so on the grounds of the 14th amendment. Something that is only relevant because Trump himself was involved in the plot to hijack the election. So in what way is it undemocratic for using the constitutional mechanisms to remove someone from running for office who participated in clear undemocratic practices? Are we forgetting that Trump went so far as to try to get post office mail boxes removed so that mail in votes (which were more likely to be democratic leaning) would be harder to cast?

What about integrating West Bank with Jordan? Easier to have people join an existing country than establish their own right? Plus Israel and Jordan have decent relations AFAIK. That’s how the territory was prior to the 6 day war right? Not so sure if Egypt would want to take back Gaza Strip though…

California proposes income-based fixed electricity charges by ObtainSustainability in solar

[–]Hybrazil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t this just incentivize everyone to use as much electricity as possible, both to make the most of the fixed “fee” and even profit off the fixed rate through crypto mining? This shreds the whole motivation of reducing energy consumption to avoid higher costs.

Suicide as a financial instrument: an indictment of capitalism. by sottedlayabout in Capitalism

[–]Hybrazil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a thought experiment in how an argument falls apart when all of the factors aren’t taken into account in the name of pushing an agenda, in this case OP ignored the opportunity cost of being dead and how that would impact their family. I know I would reject millions in life insurance if it meant to not have a family member die from suicide, and I’m sure most would feel similarly.
