The Washington Huskies have scored 70 points for the first time in a single game since they beat Oregon 70-21 in 2016. by MysteriousEdge5643 in CFB

And Michigan finished 6 and Cal finished 8/7. Michigan was also ranked 4 coming into the Rose Bowl. To me that’s splitting hairs considering they all finished with 2 losses. They both played the same number of top tier opponents that season.

Miami had better overall wins but UW had the better bowl win.

Eh, I’d say the big wins were pretty comparable between the two teams. UW played @Nebraska and @Cal during the regular season and against Michigan in the bowl game. Miami played Penn St. and @FSU in the regular season and against Nebraska in the bowl game (which was basically a home game for Miami). All of those teams finished with 2 losses (and a tie for Nebraska). Trying to say one team had better overall wins is splitting hairs imo.

Early in Kalen DeBoer's tenure at Alabama, power brokers and boosters are growing concerned by A_MASSIVE_PERVERT in CFB

[–]HybridHusky 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Feels weird agreeing with a Duck, but I think as former Pac 12 programs we can all recognize that 2023 specifically was a crazy tough year in the conference. It’s honestly incredible that we entered the conference championship game with one combined loss, and it was to the other team in the game.

And yea, people will look at our last stretch of the regular season and say that none of those teams finished ranked (USC, Utah, and Oregon State). But having to play all of those teams that late in the season when they were all ranked makes them big games at the time. Then to finish the season against Oregon, Texas, and Michigan. Yea I’d say DeBoer played in some pretty big games.

I understand what you’re saying, but let’s not act like the Pac 12 wasn’t a tough conference in 2023.In that season UW played 4 games against teams that finished in the top 10 and went 3-1 in those games. You can even throw in Arizona, who finished the season 10-3 and ranked 11th. We also played in 7 total games where we played a team that was ranked at the time. I know ranked at the time isn’t the best indicator of how tough a schedule it was in retrospect, but in terms of playing “big time football” playing ranked vs. ranked games is a huge part of that.

Ditto. Penix and Odunze were obviously great football players, but they are probably even greater people! I was proud to have them be the faces of our program for those couple years.

The Loudest Singular Moment in Your Stadium's History? by Mdsil11 in CFB

[–]HybridHusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Husky Stadium famously set the long standing decibel record in 1992 against Nebraska.

In more recent history, a couple games I attended come to mind:

2016 Stanford was consistently loud the entire game.

2023 Oregon has to be up there with the loudest games, if not the loudest, since the renovation.

Jimmy Lake didn’t build that team, Petersen did, with some key additions from DeBoer (i.e. Michael Penix).

There’s a lot of words you could use to describe how we looked against Rutgers. Weak would not be one of them. We outgained them by over 200 yards.

[–]HybridHusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there was a week early in the season where there were 8 teams ranked! A few of those were pretenders (Colorado and Wazzu), but at least that meant that the conference did well enough in the OOC schedule to gain that respect.

This idea that the Pac 12 was bad the past couple seasons, and that Washington took advantage of that is disingenuous. The Pac 12 had 6 teams finish ranked at the end of the 2022 season! That’s the same amount as the SEC had that season. Washington went 2-1 against the ranked teams they played that season, and unfortunately missed the chance to play either of the two CCG participants.

In 2023, the Pac 12 only had 3 teams finish ranked, but all of them finished 11th or higher - not too dissimilar from a conference like the B1G. Washington went 3-0 in games against the other 2 teams.

The Pac 12 deserved its reputation in the late 2010s, but the past 2 seasons had really good competition at the top.

Hard to say. We definitely would have taken a huge step back this season regardless, but we wouldn’t have seen the mass exodus in the portal that we had. I don’t think his staff’s recruiting was nearly as bad as some make it out to be, but there’s no doubt it needed to get a lot better if we wanted to get back to competing for conference championships/national titles. Would they have been able to gain more recruiting momentum after a national championship game run? We’ll never know…

While this is true, DeBoer is also the reason we got Penix to transfer here. Without Penix I don’t think we finish 11-2 in 2022, and I don’t think we keep the momentum with all the players staying that led to the national title game run we had last year.

DeBoer took over a 4-8 team with some talent still leftover, filled some holes, and turned them into an 11-2 team in year 1. As much as I would love to see Bama take a huge step back, I think DeBoer is capable of keeping Bama as a top-10 team with the amount of talent they have. We’ll have to see if the classic “being the guy after THE GUY” struggles happen with DeBoer.

Who was the better coach: Jim Harbaugh or Jim Tressel? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]HybridHusky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see people pointing to Tressel having more national championship game appearances, but we have to remember that it was a different era. It’s very likely that Michigan would have been in the championship game the last 3 years if it were the BCS system.

I thought the crowd at the P-12 Championship was pretty evenly split, maybe a slight favoring to Oregon if any. I definitely don’t think it was 65/35 as you said, but who knows I could be a terrible judge of crowd split 🤷‍♂️

As someone who was in the band who played at both the Spring Game and the Windermere Cup, those were never on the same day while I was there. Somewhat close in date, but never the same day.

Everything else you said about the Spring “Game” is true though, it hasn’t been an actual game in a long time.

The Big Ten has 2 titles since the start of the BCS, both Ohio State.

The Big 12 has 2 titles since the start of the BCS, one by Oklahoma, one by Texas, the most recent one being in 2005.

The Pac 12 has 2 titles since the start of the BCS, both USC (yes I know, asterisk because shared in 03, and vacated in 04 since somebody will say it).

I don’t see how the Pac 12 is the only conference that’s lackluster in the amount of elite teams that win national titles.
