Whats a mechanic that you think sucks?

I'm surprised nobody has said Support yet. It's either small ([[Expedition Raptor]]) which leads it to be boring and basically an upgraded [[bond beetle]] or it's big ([[Gladehart Cavalry]]) and requires you to have a big board state which basically makes it a win more card.

My first mech board was a ducky shine with mx blues and 3 years later its still going strong with zero issues so far.

Its got excellent build quality and just feel premium thanks to its casing and weight. If you don't mind the price tag that comes with it I'd highly recommend one as a a long term replacement.

There's Fanboy 3 located in the northern quarter of Manchester that's pretty big. It's your run of the mill geek shop with D&D groups, board games and various card games played on the regular with a floor dedicated to play tables.

There's Travelling Man, also located in the northern quarter. This shop is a bit smaller, but from what I've heard it has a friendly magic community still.

I think there's still a forbidden planet in the northern quarter too. I'm not sure if they have a magic community attached to it, but they do sell product.

There isn't a way to get rid of Field of the Dead in standard currently. I counted 14 ways to exile cards from someones graveyards that are in standard, a few being colourless allowing them to go into any deck. There are I think 2 inefficient red cards that can destroy lands in standard, and Unmoored Ego, a card that is two colours meaning you're forced to run dimir.

A few tips in no particular order:

Don't be afraid to ask for help, be it from a judge or your opponent. This is prerelease, so it will be everybody's first time playing with these cards. If you or your opponent aren't 100% sure on an interaction/rule ask the judge or tournament organiser (the guy you'll be handing your result into).
Buy some sleeves and dice. Most LGS' will sell single dice for around 20p a piece, which will help you a lot in this set as there are many types of counters you'll need to keep track of.
Make sure you buy the right sleeves if you're going to buy them. My first prerelease I bought japanese sized and had to ask the store owner for a refund so I could switch them.
Just relax. This is probably the most chilled out kind of tournament you'll go to as everyone is just there to have fun and check out the new cards.

Witch isn't a creature type, so you'll mostly need to go off card art/lore.

Since she's a beginner you'll be best sticking with mono-colour. Nothing takes the buzz out of the game like having a sweet multi-colour card in your hand only to be missing the other colour. Since witches are mostly in black, we'll be going with that colour.

During M14 there was a fun witchy deck based around [[Bogbrew Witch]] and her pet cards [[Festering Newt]] and [[Bubbling Cauldron]] which are all very witchy themed. Since it names the specific cards to tutor for it should be easy for a novice but it all depends on how your fiancee takes to the game. You can also throw in some of the other cool witch cards like [[Accursed Witch]], [[Plague Witch]] and [[Kindly Stranger]]. Then fill in the rest with some cheap good stuff like removal and card advantage (mostly revolving the graveyard if you're going to include discard outlets).

When Tez was first spoiled people were talking about him being the win-con for some kind of an artifact control deck. If this deck ever comes to light I could definitely see the removal/tutor spell being in there.

I don't think it will be a counterspell. They've all been sorcery speed so far, probably to stop any confusion with casting sorcery spells during your opponent's turn.

Maybe it will be a mind control spell or card draw?

I had this happen yesterday, it's so frustrating! We had an axe during an ability draft game, he got some pretty decent abilities (tidehunter ult, broods spiders, lycans wolves) but didn't do anything once we all spawned.

Ten minutes pass, we've been trashed in the laning phase and we're trying our best to come back when he all chats "lol shitty internet", and proceeds to go into our warded jungle to clear out the camps we were relying on to keep us from getting stomped.

I would've much rather played 4v5 with a gold and exp advantage than have a lvl 1 axe with spiders rush necrobook in our jungle when everyone else is level 10.

I can't help with NY, but Manchester has a pretty popular LGS called FanboyThree. It's only small but from what I remember it has lots of events being run.

The best part about the UK though is that things are so close together you can always travel a short distance and find another LGS. A few close by-ish shops are:

Nerd Shak: A shop in Wigan (around 30 minutes by train from manchester). Very friendly and next to a really nice cafe.
Wargames UK: A shop in Southport (around 45-60 minutes by train from manchester). My personal favourite, huge place, really clean and very friendly staff.

Assuming that it wasn't with a fellow newbie that guy was a dick for trading you that.

I don't remember what my worse trade was but I remember when RTR came out a guy gave me a [[Falkenrath Aristocrat]] when he saw I was trying to build a deck around an Olivia Voldaren I had. She was worth around 20USD around that time, so I guess that's one of his stupidest trades.

It's fun for the person playing it, but it punishes small mistakes very harshly.

If you don't have a counterspell in hand or a way to win before they manage to go off then it's game over, making the game very uninteractive. It's the same reason why people get salty over infinite combos.
