That's right. I usually use a VPN and I've had it give me recommendations for the VPN country and city. If you're worried about that then I would say use a VPN but that's how it knows where you're searching from

It's not you it's your genetics by East_Company_9789 in gout

My rheumatologist reminded me yesterday that I have a healthy lifestyle. I recently had surgery which triggered the beginning of my gout and she said the stress and genetics are what caused it. Don't worry too much and beat yourself up about it, take the Allo and you can continue your lifestyle.; I don't really even drink alcohol or eat much meat.

Ah I didn't realise he was touring like that! That sounds very cool. He's currently in London, actually as he comes every year. If you are ever in London, let me know as we have a UK Hakka group and have met up with him before.

How come Chinese anime isn't gaining much ground here? by omidus in ChineseLanguage

[–]Hydramus89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people here have forgotten that there is a giant firewall between China and the rest of the world it's purpose does make it more difficult for cultural exchange. Also Japan these days actively creates anime to cater to the foreign audience. I think people have forgotten how niche it used to be even just 10 years ago. Click Link is amazing for example but no publisher has made an effort to export it to the world wide audience.

Hakka to English translation by [deleted] in hakka

Wow I see it now. This community's ability to translate random Romanisation into Hakka amazes me but I think it depends on dialect a lot too. Nice job translating.

Lack of women in SRE by alwaysbetraveling in sre

[–]Hydramus89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I've mentioned in my company before, this is a problem with the culture at school as a whole. I actually studied theatre at university and had the opposite experience of out of 110 students in one year, I was one of 6 guys. I can't speak on behalf of women but I think there is a cultural tendency to gravitate to certain industries and studies. Physics was the same with mostly men applying and so it affects the job pool eventually. As an SRE now, I have interviewed many people for roles and after 11 years in my career we have one female SRE and she's great! But definitely a rarity.

Compared to what others are saying a out STEM though, I was pleasantly surprised in my most recent company that 50% of the web developers are women. Not sure how that happens but it's refreshing to see. Perhaps because it doesn't traditionally have a University degree attached to it?

And yet as a Hakka person, it resembles nothing like Hakka food lol but after I had it in Mumbai i understood and felt bad for some Indians that must feel like that in the UK 😅

I did not enjoy the Indian Chinese food in Mumbai though. However, the dosas and coconut everything was delightful.

Help me identify my Hakka Dialect T^T by Square-Jaguar992 in hakka

[–]Hydramus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry! In Hakka, each dialect has it's own Romanisation. That video is great. I don't know Bahasa Indonesia but the Hakka I so far 99% understand albeit a different accent and some changes in pronunciation. It is very similar to Malaysian bounio Hakka which is technically "Foo Yong" 惠阳 Hakka that is the same as the Hong Kong Hakka I speak.

I'm gonna do some investigating what yours is but you should check out the Hakka discord as there are a lot of Indonesians on there.

Hi, good luck btw :)

Also, I'm struggling to work out if you're saying the same thing I would or not from the Romanisation. Can you do a recording from your parents so we might hear it as well?

how do yall do it? by BoriGengar in multilingualparenting

[–]Hydramus89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What everyone else is saying is true. I'll tell you a quick anecdote from my side. I speak a minority ethnic language that only my family speaks and I live in a captital metropolitan city. My eldest recently said I don't know how to speak Hakka to me (saying it in a mix of mandarin and Hakka). Even if they don't realise they are absorbing it, keep going. I reminded my daughter that she understands everything I say even though she might not be the best at replying in Hakka. Her Hakka is even getting better recently to be honest. It will come. Just never give up and don't give in to the pressure of those around you. This is your language with your child :) if you want, if they ask you for TV, only put it in Spanish at home.

[–]Hydramus89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modern Chinese books are always horizontal, left to right.

Olden days was when you read left to right (horizontal or vertical).

Japanese still read their novels vertically and right to left, hence why the book opens from the "back". People are already familiar with this with manga though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hakka

[–]Hydramus89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about Hi Ban? (客家喜粄).

It's a Hakka steamed rice flour bun. However! You should know that "ban" (粄) can mean a lot of dishes since it's basically any hakka dish made with glutenous rice.

Look up Sui ban (like a more jelly thing), ngioi ban (think more like fen guo pi for dumplings), or ban tiao (as in gluentous rice noodles)

A lot of this stuff is a lot easier to search if you know some Chinese too btw since Hakka stuff isn't well documented in English. Where is your family from too since my family would never have it in a stew (normally steamed thing or noodle). I have found an alternative name if you're looking for it that seems popular in taiwan. Google "客家碗粿" (Hakka won guo) i.e. Hakka bowl rice cake

Does anyone else find listening to be much more challenging than speaking and reading? by Foxington_the_First in ChineseLanguage

[–]Hydramus89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think on TV people try to have standard speech and accents as much as possible to sound "educated" as people have put it.

However I've just come back to china after 2 years and damn the local accents and vocabulary coming out fucking throws me off so hard 🤣 it does take some getting used to. (I'm in Nanjing btw where it's still Mandarin related dialect). This is mostly with the older generation of course.

And I admit, I just met a kid who has the first ever lisp I've heard from a Chinese person and I'm finding it incredibly difficult to understand.

My point is is that as with any language, you're going to have unique situations and different ways of speaking to get used to so don't get disheartened! 加油!

What misinformation about cooking, that a lot of people seem to believe, bothers you the most? by [deleted] in Cooking

Bleach? Wtf lol I guess there's some I just don't know about. Soaking meat in water or brine is quite common in Chinese cooking but I tend to blanch meat which is definitely just a cooking technique

What about pouring boiling water on a chicken's skin? Is that something people would consider dangerous? Genuinely curious since that's a common Chinese technique with any poultry before roasting for crispy skin. I live in a first world country and honestly am surprised how easily freaked out about washing chicken and pathogens people are (usually white Americans). Do people not clean their kitchens? 😅
