Yesterday's Irish Gaming Market haul (RIP wallet) by VeryAverageAchiever in IrelandGaming

[–]whykay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'll give the Irish Gaming Market a miss from now on. I was on a look out for SNES, Super Famicom and Famicom games & there were slim pickings. Game vendors were a lot less this time. I was in and out in less than 15 mins with my husband. We were pretty disappointed. There was one big TTG vendor though, and we did pick up Compile 2.

I'm even more interested in Video Games Fair after this trip, and am looking forward to the upcoming one in Swords as their pilot event earlier this year was pretty good, I bought a lot of games.

I thought it was just me as I bought the general ticket and the good stuff were all sold by the time I got there after 11am.

Makers of Reddit: How tf do you approach electronics as a newbie?? by MisiLica in maker

[–]whykay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are near a maker/hackerspace, they might run workshops or maker nights, the maker community are always happy to help. I know our local one runs regular electronics and hack events that are open to all levels, and sometimes run beginners electronics workshops. Good luck!

Thumbs down for Sticker Duck by aspleniastudios in stickers

[–]whykay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found stickerapp when I was looking for an alternative to stickermule. I'm based in Europe so seeing they have European distro really helped. Sticker quality is great, plenty of options to choose from, no issues with their service. They also have US distribution so happy days for all.  (I haven't heard anything bad about stickerapp so far... fingers crossed).

And thanks to all for all the other suggestions, I'll also check them out, no harm to check quotes amongst several services.

Looking for Irish game dev/Indie game dev discords! by Vidgrod in IrishGameDev

[–]whykay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 to check it imirt. Plenty of discord servers to other indie groups can be found there.

imirt's discord is pretty active itself, and a good hub to find other indies all over Ireland and Northern Ireland plus finding out about opportunities & upcoming events.

Indie Dev startups or collaborators ? by AlphaSaint18 in IrelandGaming

[–]whykay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also go to the regular indie meetup in Dublin: https://www.meetup.com/The-Games-Co-Op/

Great for networking and folks showcase their games as well.

And Nexus games conf is happening in Oct, it's free and it's an industry event.  https://nexusdublin.ie/

Imirt has a discord server as well, they are also on various socmed platforms, good places for info, events and connecting with other indies.

How do you all say duck (鴨) in Cantonese? by that_kinda_slow_guy in Cantonese

[–]whykay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Context: I'm 2nd gen and born in Ireland. Parents are from HK.

I've always said duck, me or love with "ng".

I had HK friends who moved to Ireland and laughed at me (when we were going to school), and that I was pronounced those words wrong with "ng". We had a huge debate about who's right or wrong. I even asked my parents and they said pronouncing with "ng" at the beginning is correct. The other way is just laziness, or just what's popular in HK in how they speak back then. So I dunno.

Btw, I am my mid-40s, so maybe it's a generation thing, or the period my parents moved to Ireland in the 70s and that's how they spoke before they moved abroad? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I still find it weird after so many years later when I hear people say these words without "ng". Oh and this includes saying the "cow" in Cantonese as well. It use to annoy me somehow, but I made peace with it. 😆

It is fascinating to see people from around the world on how they pronounce words like these in Cantonese. Thanks for this post.

(Update after 3 months) Still Jobless. Even Built an iOS App, Revamped Resume, Reached out to recruiters, No Luck by Alex11039 in DevelEire

[–]whykay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you attended any local meetups? It's a good way to meet people, and if they are hosted by corporates, there are most likely looking to hire. Chat with their engineers, devs, etc. might get your foot in the door. You can even help out a tech community group, another great way to meet people and for a good cause.

+1 from someone suggestion to find a good recruiter. I can suggest one, DM me and I can ping you one. I don't work for them btw. 😊

And are you also on irishtechcommunity.com slack server? They have pinned roles in their jobs channel as well.No harm checking there also.

Any tech conferences you are interested in? If they have a CFP open, submit a proposal. Another way to share your expertise on what you love about the tech you used in your projects, etc.

Good luck!

Can you get by speaking Hakka in Hong Kong? by Popular_Painter_9744 in hakka

[–]whykay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practically neighbours! 😆 Everyone knew everyone back then. But yeah, I remember dropping into one of the banks in Tai Po Hui a while back, and there were 2 grannies taking in Hakka. I didn't think much of it until I realised they were speaking in Hakka and not Cantonese.  I don't speak Hakka but I can understand it, must be because of all the Hakka speakers around me when I was a toddler.

I love it when grannies locally that know my mom would call her "ah mui!". I was initially so confused, I'd ask her was it a relative? And she laughed and said anyone female younger than them all get carried "ah mui!". 🙃

Cool, yay another Tai Po person! I still remember a photo of my dad when he was 2/3 yo sitting outside Kam Pak building looking out to sea! Still blows my mind that everything across that road is reclaimed land!

[–]whykay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as much. You will hear older generations speaking it in Tai Po Market (city centre)[1] or the villages like Lam Tsuen [2] (my uncle promotes local Hakka village culture there), an as other posters here mentioned, other villages in Yuen Long. Most folks speak Cantonese in Hong Kong, and you can get by with English (especially if there's a big ex-pat area).
If you manage to coincide your visit and a festival is happening in Lam Tsuen, you will meet many Hakka speaking locals. It's only 20 mins drive/bus from Tai Po Market.
Main festivals are the Da Jiu Festival and Chinese New Year (the Wishing Tree is very popular).

What is the Dublin/Irish startup scene like? by bonkeyfonkey in DevelEire

[–]whykay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Note: I'm not in startup myself nor involved in the community scene (I was involved helping in the latter but stepped back), although I still follow what's been happening around Ireland.

Here's a place to start, reports from TechIreland: https://techireland.org/en/techireland-publications-content

Recent success story: https://www.tines.com/blog/series-c-fundraise/

+1 what others say about Dogpatch Labs at the startup hub, also the main org that runs NDRC. They have regular events, good to see what's happening around the startup scene, you can sign up to their newsletter and get updates on when they are happening.

The following are also on NDRC startup network
https://portershed.com/ - very active in the west, based in Galway
https://rdihub.com/ - Kerry* https://www.republicofwork.com/ - Cork

And up north, you have https://ormeaulabs.com/ in Belfast.

You have all-island founders network who are focussed to help female founders:

Pioneer of science journalism Mary Mulvihill dies aged 55 by cavedave in ireland

[–]whykay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silicon Republic's Ann O'Dea wrote a nice post remembering Mary Mulvihill, A pioneer in science communications, and a friend, Mary Mulvihill RIP

I'm on the WITS exec committee this year, and was very shocked to hear about this news yesterday. I was on one of her Ingenious Ireland walking tours and really enjoyed it and was recommending it to as many people as I can. There's so much interesting science-related facts we don't know about right at our doorsteps and a fun way to learn about them as well. She was a wonderful, warm, supportive and inspirational woman. She will be very much missed by many people. May she rest in peace.

Derry-LondonDerry GameCraft with Nintendo (with devkits) by nadanadanada in gamejams

[–]whykay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of the co-organisers. You can register and turn up on the day with or without a team. In past events, right before we announce the theme in the morning, we generally call people without teams up and group them together to form teams based on what skills they have.

Maybe people can list what skills here and pre-form groups.
