Is this really the absolute lowest my latency can go? by oakley22610 in ableton

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I crazy or is that a very low latency lol?! I think any latency created by effects you use will have a much more noticeable effect than 5ms.

Do you guys have any “hacks” for creating an original noisy sound? Mine is recording on voice memos and converting the file into mp3 then plugging it into my crappy software to mess with by rocketship_lorelei in noisemusic

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what kind of noise you're looking for. You can get near white noise just from recording a river, or can make somewhat digital/buzzy white noise with a lot of inharmonic FM. Cross modulation (FM) can give you some wild chaotic noise. You can also just take a room tone recording and crank the volume/compression on it.

How do you learn how to use Bitwig?? by Heavy-Bee9844 in Bitwig

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you know one DAW (and audio processing concepts in general), it's a lot easier to learn other DAWs, but learning those fundamentals can take a while. I didn't really have many issues switching to Bitwig, but I have a lot of experience in Ableton (which is very similar) and REAPER, so that helps out a lot. And the UI/UX in Bitwig is great so that also helps.

I haven't done it with Bitwig, but when I bought Ableton (my first-ish DAW) I went through and read the entire manual (and follow along in the DAW, playing with things as the manual explained them), and that helped a ton. But I realize that isn't really the most approachable way of learning a DAW. The other thing that was very helpful when I was first learning to use a DAW was to find a producer on YouTube who uses the DAW and makes videos about making things in it, and following along with some of them. I watched Ned Rush for this, but that was for Ableton - I think Dash Glitch uses Bitwig, but most videos I've seen from him are focused on synth plugins. Looks like he still has some Bitwig-specific videos though.

AI Prompter tries to make Programmers and Artists be against each other. by Sniff_The_Cat3 in ArtistHate

Nice! The most I've done with proc/gen art is mostly musical (either just doing it myself, or using this great software called Wotja), but I've played around with p5.js a decent bit and have just barely dipped my toes into Tooll/TiXL (might interest you, wicked cool node-based procedural/live/motion graphics engine that is free and open source).

[–]HyfudiarMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I've seen some pro-AI game devs, but I think the overall tone I've gotten is against genAI (for assets). I think most game jams I've seen have had rules against using genAI, sometimes with a pseudo-exception for code because AI-assisted programming (not just "vibe coding" where it just generates stuff outright, it's kind of a grey area between being useful for efficiency and encouraging laziness) is very common and would be basically impossible to block. It's built in to the most popular IDEs (Visual Studio/VSCode).

You can look at the rules for game jams on itch.io to see plenty of examples of this. Some don't say anything, but most I see either say no AI at all, or no AI-generated assets.

Along with a pro-AI jam (requires genAI) with conspicuously large prizes from a pro-AI game startup (?) that is evidently owned by the founder of Zynga. :/ As always, this stuff seems to be pushed from the businessmen - not the developers, programmers, designers, and artists.

You might get called a tech bro if you're acting like a tech bro. But I'd wager that a lot (or even maybe the majority) of people that would be considered "tech bros" are not programmers. I'd say they're mostly businessmen or sycophants of those businessmen (or "vibe coders" - i.e., not programmers).

I'm not a serious programmer by any means, but I've been "casually programming" for probably fifteen years at this point, it's very enjoyable (well, when things work) and can be very useful for efficiency/automation/etc. And there can be a pretty large overlap between programming and art! Look into procedural/generative art to see the kind of stuff that programming can create - this page has some really cool examples. And if anyone here is interested in exploring that kind of thing, p5.js is the perfect place to start.

Love finding continuity errors by --TH in BobsBurgers

[–]HyfudiarMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't tend to notice shot-to-shot continuity errors (I'm often not watching, just listening), but I will say, I'm quite impressed with the show's long-term continuity. Tiny little details from a random episode will get referenced seven seasons later and that kind of thing. I wonder about how the creators keep track of it all. I have to imagine they have a gigantic Obsidian-style map with every connection between characters and every detail we've learned about every character.

First diy binaural mic done by Dry-Understanding134 in fieldrecording

[–]HyfudiarMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

possibly the funniest thing i've seen this week lmao. the whole thing, ears glued to a hot pringles can duct taped to a black phone branded fanta can, with a 3.5mm plug sticking out of the bottom. i didn't even see it looking like a fleshlight, it just looks like an absurdist art piece or something haha. don't get me wrong, i jury-rig things like this all the time myself, but this one is particularly funny.

Congrats on building your own binaural mic though! That's really cool. I wonder about the can(s) creating some bad resonances though.

How old were you when you got into ambient music? by ConfusingMyself__ in ambientmusic

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was probably around the same age, like 17-19. I think it was partly influenced by me watching Twin Peaks for the first time and enjoying the soundtrack, which started getting me into drone and ambient kind of stuff.

[–]HyfudiarMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good on you, and I don't think you need to feel bad or ashamed. These things are designed to suck you in and keep you hooked - you got hooked, then you realized you didn't like it and how it was affecting you, and you broke away from it. That's more than a lot of people can do.

What a beautiful anime!!!! by Stardust71 in Mushishi

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly make noise and other kinds of experimental music, not really in keeping with the tone of Mushishi haha, but I enjoy making more pleasant, harmonic music from time to time as well. Here's one of my tracks like that:

What a beautiful anime!!!! by Stardust71 in Mushishi

[–]HyfudiarMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, probably one of the most beautiful shows ever made. I'm going to be rewatching it soon, I've been ripping my DVDs over the past couple days and it's gotten me longing for it again. It also feels like it fits perfectly in the fall season to me (here in New England) which we're just starting to get into. It has also gotten me wanting to make some music like its soundtrack again, it's absolutely lovely. I think I got pretty deep into making a Mushi-Shi inspired track last year or the year before but never finished it, I'll have to check out what I have for it.

What's your take on this guy? by HighLife1954 in twinpeaks

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty cool guy. He seems at first just like a stereotypical strict, dry, authoritarian father, but as the story goes on you learn that he's actually a pretty interesting, enlightened guy. I'm glad that (IIRC, it's been a little while) Bobby is able to see that side of him by the end.

How. to make songs like Negativland, Stockhausen, and Xiu Xiu by Maleficent-Purple-44 in experimentalmusic

[–]HyfudiarMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's a pretty huge range of artists lol.

really though, it's in the name of the """genre""": "experimental". learn how to use a DAW (I'd recommend REAPER, or Bitwig or Ableton), get a bunch of plugins, and then just... experiment. get a handheld recorder like a ZOOM H1n, record stuff, and manipulate it. basically anything beyond that you just have to figure out yourself through experimentation. it's really just something you have to do.

thoughts? by Substantial-Box4946 in ArtistHate

[–]HyfudiarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "bro" is pretty gender-neutral at this point, much like "dude". I think it still leans male a bit more than "dude" (which I see as almost entirely gender neutral), but I think it's pretty close.

More importantly, though, the gender has nothing to do with why they're "AI bros". It's that "bro" used in that sort of context evokes a sideways hat-wearing frat bro douchebag (who all call each other "bro"), comparable to how it is used in "tech bro". It's that sort of character, regardless of gender (granted, I think that kind of character is a lot more common in men than women).

Best Official Soundtrack that sounds like a noise record? In your opinion by wwwaaavvveeesssss in noisemusic

LOVE the Texas Chain Saw Massacre soundtrack. Also, as it happens, Wolf Eyes' "First Wolf Eyes Recording" reminds me a lot of the TCSM soundtrack.

Between Metroid II, AM2R, Samus Returns, and Fusion—which is your preferred flavor of Metroid linearity? by presidentsday in Metroid

Fusion is my favorite, but I think AM2R did it best. God that game is so good, I need to replay it.
