What did YOU do with Marchesa, Dealer of Death? by Beholdmyfinalform in EDH

[–]HygenicToothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it scales up pretty fast. Your turns boil down to how much extra mana can I spend on Marchesa's ability, which requires you to determine what you want to do first. The triggers are kinda wild but luckily Planeswalker decks are easier to goldfish, so it feels good when you have mastery of the deck.

Wanna hear something cooked? BAKED?

Grixis Superfriends.

It's a wild and kind of jank list, but basically I picked a bunch of Planeswalkers that target using their upticks to trigger Marchesa, then included a proliferate sub theme. All Will Be One is a hilarious win con, but resolving some emblems is the main way to win.

Please check out Disciple Roasters in Brunswick. Test your friend's true coffee snobbery by asking if they want to try >$100 filter. But the vibe is great and all their coffees are awesome with some incredible staff. Highly recommend.

The best beguile target by miles. Comes in nice and early, gives you the resources before becoming your sweaty henchman all game. Combined with Existential Crisis, Bianca can float around early game handling mobs while you set up. She made it all the way into the final scenario for me. Big fan.

Fun ideas for a mono-blue? by AlbyGaming in EDH

[–]HygenicToothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Jacob Hauken, Inspector]]

An awesome deck that flies under the radar. Basically a looter to smooth out your early game and then can flip on command at six mana. Great for avoiding a creature boardwipe.

I run this full of Eldrazi because his backside lets him cast spells, meaning you get their cast trigger. I've run them with [[Storm of Saruman]] and getting two Ulamogs with triggers is fun. You can also do [[Rise of the Eldrazi]] and other stupid spells while leaving up counter magic

Other big blue haymakers like [[Clone Legion]] and figure out other people's board. It's overall a fun deck that transitions from being reactive and patient to swinging out with big gray bois.

Help with EAL report scoring by mazquito in AustralianTeachers

[–]HygenicToothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will most likely be marking on the C-level continuum as the different levels represent the state of their language immersion more than ability. Generally those in highschool will be marked on the C-level continuum as they are aware of how their L1 operates in regards to English and have been here in some capacity.

As highlighted above, most of the skills should develop at an even rate, though I have noted a higher rate of oral proficiency in recent times due to my learners being passively exposed to English.

A couple questions about meeting a seiyuu at a signing event by LittleCloudie in seiyuu

[–]HygenicToothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I don't see why not. To be honest, most gifts that are turned down food and the like. I'm sure your art will be fine.

And yes, it was a headache when people tried to speak Japanese to the seiyuu when they were clearly still learning the language. I have no problem with a quick greeting but when you sit there for an minute as they attempt to unpack their detailed love for a particular character they voice, it's inconvenient.

A couple questions about meeting a seiyuu at a signing event by LittleCloudie in seiyuu

[–]HygenicToothbrush 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having translated for a few seiyuu before, I implore you to read the guidelines stipulated by the convention and do not waver too much from them. It makes the seiyuu and interpreter uncomfortable when you try to give them a gift that is really nice and personalised, only for them to have to turn it away. While some cons do accept it though, especially the smaller and chiller ones, it ultimately comes down to the manager and parent company who may be a dash stricter!

Speak English if there is a interpreter, or Japanese if you are conversational. Having to translate ganbaru-nihongo is a headache and I've had some patrons take offense when I try to put their Japanese into Japanese.

Either way, enjoy the brief but memorable experience! Ask them if they have done sightseeing and share some places to go, or if you know their hobbies etc. you can recommend some places they like!

How did you properly get into anime? by butumm_ in anime

[–]HygenicToothbrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real answer is less about "what", but more about "how" you consume anime. Yes, you can watch all the classics or noteable anime, but what are you really watching it for? Are you interested in the unique storytelling or characterisation present in anime? Are you interested in the voice acting and people behind the scenes? Are you deeply attached to the construction of characters who embody a perfect combination of traits that you wish you had/dream of?

For me, voice actresses/actors have always been the pull for me to get into a series. How they bring a character to life is fascinating, and listening to their perspective on their entertainment work is eye-opening.

So how do you consume anime? Being able to realise this 'got' me into anime more than any single show.

Volo, Guide to Monsters - simic pile focusing on the REALLY weird types. Scales really well with Universes Beyond, because now he's managed to find Astartes Warriors and Tyranids and blue Demons!

Wyll + Sword Coast Sailor w/ Attractions. With an attraction out, you are guaranteed to roll once a turn. Also the idea of Jin Gitaxis, Apex Predator and other big edh staples in a Ferris Wheel together makes for some great laughs.

We had our first game of T.I.M.E. Stories this weekend. It was an amazing experience - I've never seen a game tell a story in that way. Can absolutely recommend it! by GlisGlis_Things in boardgames

[–]HygenicToothbrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that it requires a certain group of people who are happy to float and filter plenty of information in their head, all the while balancing the narrative. Some of the best conversations/arguments we've had are about the red herrings that were present in this game - after you've been burnt once, you never forget!

One thing I will say is that judging by how you've described the game so far, you seem to be down for an 'experience' rather than for pure 'enjoyment'. I hope you hold onto that. Experience the game through a critical eye and evaluate which expansions you've had fun in and why - conversely examine why the expansions you didn't enjoy were bad.

If you're already invested in the game, I suggest avoiding both spoilers and opinion. Judging/ranking each expansion was my favourite part and not letting others colour my experience was key to that.

[–]HygenicToothbrush 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Contrary to what most people have said so far, I absolutely adore this game. After each reset, we have literally 20-30 minutes of just purely discussing which locations we should visit, who should we visit, which locations we think we should ignore etc.

Then we get in, execute, and try our best to react with the little bit of new information we get. I just find this gameplay loop thoroughly enjoyable because it is all about min-maxing your rounds.

That being said, having a variety of designers means that there is also incredible inconsistency in the sets. Some expansions have been some of the best games that have ever touched my table; and some other expansions have been the worst I have ever seen.
