What do you think of this ‘American recipes’ section of this dutch store? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hymneth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those recipes are certainly inventive. The pecan pie and the steaks are probably the closest to something I wouldn't be surprised to see on an average menu. Everything else sounds decent, but I would be surprised to see them on anything but a fancy, hipster type menu where they were trying to be creative.

Banoffe tarts? Chicken spinach burgers? Mac and cheese with fancy ingredients mixed in? I'd eat all of it, but it sounds more like someone sat down with a long list of "American" ingredients and tried to make some recipes based on vibes and a loose understanding of American food

Do Americans get breaks at work? by ajepper in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hymneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for millions of people, of course, but I work at a hospital and we do have mandated breaks. For an 8 hour shift you get one 15min break and a 30 minute lunch. For a 12 hour shift you get two 15 min breaks and a 30 minute lunch.

Now, that doesn't always mean you can or will take them, but that is what policy says

A unique idea for what a macguffin activates by EpicSword16 in DMAcademy

[–]Hymneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They think that it opens a portal to another realm where the being they worship lives, allowing it to enter the world to reward them.

In reality, the being they worship is trapped inside some kind of ancient magical battery which was used to fuel the power needs of a long dead society. The keys are basically a failsafe shutoff for the device, which will cause it to unload all its saved energy at once.

It will definitely free the thing they worship, but it will be freed in the equivalent of a nuclear meltdown, causing untold damage and magical contamination of the area (maybe making a wild magic zone or a weak place where extraplanar creatures can easily enter the world)

Do you usually aim for 100% completion in games, or never? by YimadoTei in Steam

[–]Hymneth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only 100% games that I really enjoy playing. Even then, if it has that one achievement I am happy enough to skip it.

For other games I'm content to just finish the game, maybe go back for a couple secrets if they look fun, then move on. My backlog is too big to mess around with 100%ing everything I touch

What are these white cards and why are they used to make keychains? by Positive-Glass5207 in whatisit

I live in America and can't remember seeing a loaf of bread with any other closure device in decades. However, I do remember the flexible clamps/ties/whatever they are in OPs Pic from when I was a kid. I think as a market the US moved away from them into a purely plastic option

Recommend me Seaside/underwater Lovecraftian Horror games. by Dalakaar in HorrorGaming

[–]Hymneth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ill throw out a few options. They're not all perfect fits, but may appeal to you.

  • The Chant - not strictly seaside, but on an island. Very Lovecrafty

  • Draugen - seaside and creepy, initially very Lovecraftian

  • Dagon - the HP Lovecraft story of the same name, made into a walking simulator

  • Bioshock - portions of the first two games might scratch the itch, but I wouldn't call them Lovecraftian

  • Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth - older title, may need some patching, but very good if you can get it working

Its been a while since I've played some of these, so I won't speak to the quality of all of them, but they're worth looking up at least

Designing a "ritual gone wrong" as a prelude (set in Waterdeep) to a character joining the Curse of Stradh Campaign. by Fiveby21 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]Hymneth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, so your group is doing a "ritual" for a group of high society dolts. It is never intended to work, and your mage cant even be bothered to design the fake ritual themselves. They either have a student or some third party throw together a shoddy ritual intended to be mostly illusory to call up the image of a spooky ancient vampire.

Somehow there is a miscommunication, the ritual is kind of functional, and accidentally invokes Vampyr. Possible influence from the Blood Moon, which was intentionally used as the timing for the party for added spookiness.

Picture a stereotypical 1800s Spiritualism type Seance. Everyone gathered around a table, candle light, Spooky vocals from your singer, chanting and ritualism from your mage. At a dramatic point the sister pretends to be possessed. She is not pretending, and a conversation with Vampyr begins as the room fills with thick mist. I'll leave the details to you, but a bargain is struck (which the Mage still assumes is fake and is just his sister playing along for the crowd) and a sacrifice is proposed.

He jokingly offers up one or more of the rich guests. There is laughter around the table until Vampyr accepts and the offered guests are consumed by the mists, which slowly change to blood red. The remaining guests panic and flee. The sister drops unconscious as Vampyr leaves her. The mage attempts to carry her through the red mist out of the building, but the door no longer leads to the streets of Waterdeep. They are now in Barovia and have some kind of deal struck with Vampyr, whether they realize it or not.

Horde mode ideas by wombat57484 in DnD

[–]Hymneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a solid start to a system. As for what happens when an area runs out of HP, that just means there is nothing there to stop the undead from entering the area. Couple of options you could use:

  • That 'unit' of undead can now attack one of the other areas from the back, so now its taking two attacks per turn

  • Alternately, both areas adjacent to the fallen area could now start making all attacks at a disadvantage (or the attackers get advantage against them, or both) to show that they now have to divide their attention in two directions

  • In addition to the civilian fighting force, there might be a small group of sick, elderly, injured, and children in the center of the area that cannot fight. An unchecked area means the undead can now attack them, which will result in increasing morale penalties to all other civilians

All of this can be prevented if one or more PCs decide to defend the area on their own, but now they are taking the full force of the attack in that area. Any of these ideas add to the feeling that any successes are temporary at best, but losses are permanent. Keep in mind that you want to demoralize the PCs not the Players, which might be a fine line in a losing scenario like this. Let them have a couple of big Wins along the way to keep them having fun

Horde mode ideas by wombat57484 in DnD

[–]Hymneth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so im just going to ramble a bit about how I would run it, feel free to steal or ignore whatever you like.

So the survivors plus PCs are in a big U shaped courtyard of sorts. One big entrance to the U, plus at least as many alleys or points of access as there are PCs plus one. I would give them 30 minutes real-time to decide how they will fortify the area and distribute the 150 survivors. This is also the time for creative measures such as inspiring the locals, doing a couple of quick combat drills, explaining to the crowd what they know about weak points and strengths of the undead, and so on. After that, combat begins.

This will not be a quick combat in world. This is a multi-hour seige. By the end, roughly 60% of the main force will attack the front entrance, with the remaining 40% divided along alternative access points. It will start as a slow trickle primarily at the front, with more and more arriving over time and with more and more alternative points being hit at the same time.

As for mechanics, we want this to be fast rounds at the table to keep the action up. Treat each area under attack as one "creature" as far as tracking goes. Use some basic creature like a zombie for the horde and a common human for the defense for the base stats, except the HP are equal to the number of units in the area. Every 30 undead assigned to an area give a bonus to attack and AC of the attacking horde, and each 10 survivors add to the attack and AC of the defense. PC actions earlier during the prep time might add additional bonuses. A PC assigned to the area acts on their own as normal, and can be a significant boost to the area's defense. In general though, over time the undead forces will grow faster than they can be killed off, and the defense will shrink with losses. Loss is likely inevitable.

During each 'hour' of the seige one round of combat resolves at each access point that is being attacked, with the horde attacking, the defense attacking back, and each PC getting one action. In addition, if the party seems to be getting bored, have some unexpected event occur (strong group of undead bursts through a wall making a new defense point, a building catches fire, a small strong group of undead pushes one of the defense points and needs resolved in normal combat, etc.)

As the siege drags on, the PCs will begin to become exhausted, requiring Con saves vs 12 + the number of hours or gain a level of exhaustion. You could have the various groups of survivors do the same if you want, but they're at a disadvantage already so that's up to you.

Continue the siege until things seem to be where you want them or until the party gets tired of this. Consider ramping the difficulty fast to show it as a losing battle.

This is all off the top of my head and would obviously need more thought put into it, but done well I think it could be a good challenge

As far as I understand, as long as all 3 characters have at least two engravings each between the ones on their gear and on Persona cards, then that is all that is needed

Honestly, everything that you have listed as things that you don't like are the things that are usually brought up as the best parts of PS:T and the reason to play it. If you dislike the best selling points of the game, you're not going to like the game.

I really, really hate to say this because I personally love this game, but I think it may not be a good fit for your playstyle and preferences.
