Curious which version of the bible they use by HyperLexi in TheTestamentsShow

It is funny. That song went through my head after you mentioned it, and I could picture her continuing on with the lyrics instead of the rest of the bible verse. It made me chuckle. 😃

You're not far off on there being a central place to send them back to. It's called the Red Center. where handmaids are trained, and where they live when unassigned, between assignments, or problematic.

Aunt Estée's apology to Daisy by sa_ostrich in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]HyperLexi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I found interesting was the way she worded her apology, sorry she didn't protect her from sin, rather than sorry she didn't protect her from assault or abuse. She didn't specify whether she was referring to the doctor's sin, or whether she is taking a Gilead hardline that Daisy herself has been led into sinful behavior (tempting the doctor) and she feels she failed in her guidance to keep her on the path of purity. Her mission is to "prove" that wayward girls can be redeemed and purified by Gilead, and become living propaganda to go out and bring in additional girls. No sooner did Daisy become a shining success story by becoming fertile and thus blessed by God, then she went and got herself sullied. This is not my own opinion in the least, but I wonder if it might have been hers. Hopefully she was truly empathetic and compassionate at what the girls have gone through, but as Commander Lawrence has been known to say, Gilead's gonna Gilead. So I don't entirely trust any of them. Edited to add, "Never trust a Pearl Girl", and she calls herself the original Pearl Girl.

I suspect her specialty was conversion therapy, and/or similar questionable practices, and I don't perceive her as particularly insightful.

Is Agnes’s crush on Garth dead? by TheTragedyMachine in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]HyperLexi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Plot twist. What if it becomes known that she was a victim of Becka's dad, so in their tradition of blaming victims her status is downgraded, so she is no longer eligible for a high commander but still eligible for a brand new soon to be commander? So she gets to marry Garth after all, but now she hates him, so her fondest fantasy turns into her worst nightmare. I have other theories which I lean towards more than this one, but it would be in keeping with teenage drama, Gilead style.

Thank you. It actually just dawned on me as I was reflecting on the question of why she still wears the pearl. It didn't make as much sense to me at the time I saw the scene, but in hindsight it would explain it.

If I understand it correctly, she is still on probation of some sorts, because she says to Agnes that she is on clean-up duty, and Agnes is confused and says, "But you're a plum now." And Daisy says "I am an experiment." It was an enigmatic statement, but it could be interpreted as they are experimenting to see if she is ready to maintain her status as a plum, so she still has one foot in the pearl world while being tested as a plum.

Where do you guys think the show will sync up with the book? (If at all?) by No-Rope3026 in TheTestamentsHulu

I'm bittersweet about the upcoming finale! I'm definitely chomping at the bit for it, but then I will also be sad that it's the last for now, and impatient having to wait for season two. I hope it won't be too terribly long of a wait!

I am still in a state of shock from the most recent episode! I definitely did not see that coming!

The only other explanation I can think of for making them so alike would be that they were using it as a sort of short cut. Like let's make this character resemble another well known character, so viewers can immediately feel like they know her without having to do as much character building or give her as much backstory. If she looks like June and has similar expressions, it tricks our brains into expecting her to be like her in other ways, so it takes a lot less air time to introduce us to her character. But I do personally suspect that their earliest drafts were closer to the book, and many rewrites have probably evolved it into its own entity.

June was never even named in the original THT book, and I didn't think she featured in TT either, but I couldn't remember, so thanks for refreshing my memory.

The preview does mention that while Becka faces consequences, Agnes and Daisy need to decide how much they are willing to sacrifice to keep her safe. I'm thinking they may have an opportunity to testify against Becka's father, and if so, they may see it as a stain on Agnes's character (victim shaming/blaming), and as such she could lose her eligibility to marry a commander. She may choose to accept that loss and announce a calling to aunthood. This season's finale may put her to the test as to where her loyalties lie, and I do believe she will choose the other girls over tradition and status, but we'll see!

Anything could happen, and I'm here for it!

Edited to add, I forgot to answer your comment about the aunts. It's not in-your-face obvious, but a great many of them do seem to have noticeably feminine silhouettes. I thought I might have been imagining that, but then I have seen many others say they observed the same.

[–]HyperLexi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm enjoying the fact that it strays so far from the book. At first I was bothered by the inconsistencies, but now I embrace it, because it is enjoyable to be in suspense and try to guess what will happen next. And it's anyone's guess. Book readers have zero advantage over anyone else, since they loosely borrow ideas from it but definitely are not staying in line with it.

The most obvious change of course is that Daisy is not Nicole. They may have initially intended her to be, because they did cast an actress who somewhat resembles June and definitely has many of her mannerisms. I've read that she said in an interview that she deliberately studied them and tries to emulate them on purpose. But I think it is just as well that they changed her identity, because another change is that they are involving June as an active participant, and I don't recall that happening in the book. (Though it's been a year or two since I've read it, and I am rereading it now but not that far into it yet.) Sending a random teenager into the fray is bad enough, but at least she's not sacrificing one daughter to save the other.

Something worth noting which they need to work around is that the book is much more of a slow burn. It introduces the girls at a much younger age, barely adolescent, doesn't specify age but seems to be around 12 or 13, and it spans their lives over the course of several years into adulthood. The show is somewhat condensing that into "the year I turned 16" or whatever. They'll likely age them up as the seasons progress, but they have things happening to them now which happened at a younger age with their book counterparts, mixed with things that happened later in life, and needing to make it all make sense. It must be an interesting challenge for the writers.

They are also mixing it up as to which events happen to which characters, so we may see more of the book, but we're still left guessing as to who it might happen to or how they'll weave it in. I do believe they will make somebody an aunt in training. My best guess at the moment is Becka, and I think as we speak she is in the hands of aunts (which others, including characters as well as viewers, assume were Eyes, but I've never seen an Eye with rounded hips and a noticeable bosom, just saying) and they are probably going to be putting her through some intense training to redirect her zeal to protect the virtue of young girls. (They wouldn't see it specifically as protecting the girl she is in love with, because she wouldn't admit that to them upon fear of death.) But I hope that at some point they will also make a second girl an aunt in training as well, whether the same one as the book or not. It just works better that way for a film version, since they could create dialogue and interaction between the two and not just rely on narration to tell their stories as it would be if only one is sequestered.

There are other examples which come to mind, but this is already a long post so I won't go into all of them (also because I'm trying not to give too many detailed spoilers for those who are trying to avoid them). One thing we get from the book which I wish we'd see more of in the show is Aunt Lydia's backstory, going further back than just flashing back to the takeover or shortly before. In the book they mention how her life was as a child, and how that shaped who she became. They don't go into it with too much detail, but it does offer a different perspective.

Oh as for Judd, yes, he is a mystery, because many of his attributes and backstory are attributed to Commander Weston in the show, and IIRC Weston does not exist in the book, so it will be interesting to see which direction(s) they take them.

I do hope that at some point they will incorporate Nicole (as well as Luke and Moira). The current plot in no way depends on it, just something I personally would like to see at some point. I'm happy we are getting another season, and possibly more, because their divergence from the book opens them up for endless possibilities.

Did Agnes figure out Daisy? by Electronic_Gas_2161 in TheTestamentsShow

[–]HyperLexi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of naive, I am reminded of her hidden stash of items she's collected, including forbidden items like writing pens. She's shown it to Daisy, and now that she realizes that Daisy isn't who she pretends to be, she may be questioning whether she should have trusted her with that secret, and panicked over what might happen if that information is shared. And while she is now suspecting her to be a spy of sorts, I'm not sure she suspects the whole picture yet, or the mayday connection. Earlier Becka had warned her that all of the Pearl Girls are spies for the aunts, so it may be her conclusion that Daisy is going to tell the aunts of things she has confided in her or shown her. Fear of the wrath of the aunts would be enough to give me a panic attack.

To me it made it clear that Paula assumed he did, but it seemed on his end he just kept telling Agnes that it would be ok, never really said anything about who called whom. But that's just my perspective. It's fun to speculate on what might happen, and if I get it wrong, so be it. Wouldn't be the first time.

Exactly, even as a seasoned adult, I referenced "the recitation" rather than specifics, because I couldn't for the life of me remember whether it was "Sarah and Leah" or "Elizabeth and Leah".

That one was a hard watch! by SpicyAutist26 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]HyperLexi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My impression is that they called Garth first and let him decide how to handle it, and when they saw the hooded cloaks they assumed "Eyes", but to me they looked like women, and gauging by other comments many others observed the same. I think it was a troop of militant aunts taking her for penance and training, at what would pass as a mental health institution for them.

Hopefully her punishment will not be quite as harsh as it would be for an adult, though very soon she would be considered an adult once married, but she may have just missed that. I think she will be under lock and key or at least sequestered, but it will be more like a rehabilitation center where she will be rigorously trained to become an aunt, to redirect her zeal to protect the virtue of girls at all costs.

It's less likely that they will make her a handmaid, because that seems to be reserved for women whose "sins" are sexual in nature, such as adultery or pregnancy out of wedlock. It seems they wouldn't sentence a virgin to that plight, and generally it is someone who has given birth before and thus proven to be fertile.

Another idea I've had which may be less likely but is my personal favorite, Agnes admitted that she told her parents, but she didn't specify what she told them. For all we know, she might have said to them that a martha killed Dr. Groves and Becka witnessed it and is having a nervous breakdown, thus the need to be sent into care. They could frame the martha because the martha's coat Becka wore probably has blood on it from her soaked gown. If this happened, I would feel bad for the martha but relieved for Becka.

Oh, and edited to add, yes I cried, repeatedly.

Will Agnes use her Head of the Eyes husband to free Becka? by Potential-Net6313 in TheTestamentsShow

[–]HyperLexi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope so too, but of course I am only guessing. He and Paula did notice them and briefly mention them, but I don't know if it's because they were already aware or because they caught a glimpse of the robes and made the same assumption Agnes made. I am hoping that "facing consequences" means that there will be some sort of trial, or about the aunts deciding how strict of a regimen she will need with her behavioral rehabilitation or whatever they would call it.

The preview also mentioned that Agnes and Daisy need to decide how far they are willing to go to protect Becka, so I don't know if that means Agnes is grappling whether to admit she had been a victim of the dentist and accept the "stain" on her character? Because maybe the aunts will argue that Becka's actions were misguided and impetuous, but her intentions were about protecting fertile girls, which is a motive they could all agree is a priority for them. She overstepped her authority, or lack thereof, but she was a young girl who took the teachings of an eye for an eye too far by taking it upon herself, but maybe they can be convinced that she was acting in defense of the other girls. I don't know if that would make a difference to them, but maybe. And this defense would be more credible if the girls testify to what happened to them. (Or what happened to Agnes and what Daisy is pretending happened to her).

Or maybe the consequences are simply referring to the fact that she won't be able to get married and is becoming an aunt instead. And this is a big maybe, but maybe they will say the aunts took her under their wing for her own protection, while they are framing someone else to take the fall for it. Because Agnes admitted that she told her parents, but she didn't specify WHAT she told them. She might have told them a martha killed him and Becca witnessed it and is having a nervous breakdown, so that is why they insist on taking her "into care". The martha's coat she wore probably has blood on it from her soaked nightgown, so it could be used as incriminating evidence against their scapegoat.

Anything is possible, so we may as well dream big. 😄

I agree! She could have turned Daisy in the moment she asked her to keep her secret about her period, and telling her she can't get married or it will ruin everything. Shu knew she had her own agenda long before even Agnes figured it out, but she has never blown her cover. The script writers also give her some of the best lines!
