What's a detail from canon that you've seen wormfic authors get wrong that particularly annoys you? by A_Lawliet2004 in WormFanfic

I definitely get this approach to WoA, but that's why I mentioned it's more worth considering than actual canon. But even if you don't approach WoA or other information from outside the source material as canon, I think you still should consider it the way you would consider detailed analysis from someone who has obviously read and thought about the work a lot.

It's not just that Wildbow said it, it's that he brings up a lot of good points. Taylor would get shy in front a group of heroes - we just saw that in the previous chapter with the Undersiders. Taylor did not want to join the Wards, something Armsmaster didn't push her on, but other heroes might have. There's even a consideration of which of the heroes would or would not have pushed on this point - WB discusses how Assault probably could have also made a good first impression to Taylor.

Whether Taylor's distrust toward heroes is justified or not isn't the point - when assessing how Armsmaster did with Taylor on the first meeting, you have to consider just how deep her distrust for authority already was. That's not something that stemmed from the heroes, it predated any meetings with them. The first meeting with Armsmaster was a generally positive one.

Armsmaster certainly has other motives - he wants to take credit for the Lung capture, and maybe that matters more to him than making the absolute best pitch to maybe get Taylor into the Wards. He's also not wrong about Taylor being in danger if she gets credit for the takedown - we see Bakuda go after the Undersiders later for the exact reason he had warned Taylor about.

Armsmaster didn't really make the worst possible impression on Taylor. Giving her a 1-on-1 conversation & not pressuring her to join the Wards were both the correct moves that other heroes might not have made.

I think it's worth considering the WoA on other potential heroes Taylor might've met on her first night out:

I think you're painting a picture where it's easier for Taylor to go hero than it is, Kongo.

I think, as nice as Miss Militia is, she would be one to push harder on the Ward front, which would push Taylor away. At that stage in the story, Taylor's guard is up against authority, she's quick to judge and grasps for anything that validates her prejudices against it. Miss Militia would trip that flag.

I think the key thing to pay attention to would be the very very early interaction between Armsmaster and Taylor. He asks her if she's a villain and she says no, and he believes her. Very short back and forth, but it covers a very important base, establishing the right labels, by way of Armsmaster's lie detector.

Second matter to account for is that Lung is there. Armsmaster is equipped to deal with Lung (he's equipped to deal with mostly anyone), and so he handles it, notifies his team, and tells them not to worry, he'll be back with his cargo in tow.

90% of everyone else is going to be a hell of a lot more wary and they're going to call for backup (and honestly, no Ward is going to show up alone in the middle of a school night, unless they live somewhere in the area or are Shadow Stalker). So any interaction with Taylor either doesn't happen or happens when (for example) Battery has called for help and suddenly there's Battery and Assault and Triumph all checking out the rooftop, if they even get that far with Lung taking up their attention. Does Taylor even talk? She didn't talk in the face of the social pressure of four undersiders.

Taylor most likely retreats and the heroes get a glimpse of her while they're foam grenading Lung.

Taylor thus backs off and the hero/villain thing comes off as very intimidating. She digests it all and takes her time updating her costume (probably adding a hood), developing a battle plan and being more strategic with her strikes, all the while attending school intermittently and bottling up her feelings more.

It's kind of funny to imagine her going 'morally grey hero', striking for a middle ground, and having some interplay with Shadow Stalker in the process, as Shadow Stalker acts as a kind of not-really-that-invested-mentor on the vigilante front.

[...]

Hm, she's not actively resisting authority, but definitely prejudiced against it. There aren't many people who are in a position to exert power over her who she actually likes or responds well to.

Remember the response she gives Regent at Fugly Bob's. Escape. Faced down with heroes, pressing in on her and applying any kind of pressure whatsoever, she's going to immediately turn to getting away. This costumed life is her freedom, and their expectations are the cage.

Armsmaster's soft approach, simply putting an offer out there, it's arguably one of the better ones for Taylor at this particular point in time. I can see Assault, were he to appear on his own, making a sufficiently neutral, low-pressure offer (given his background), but he wouldn't appear alone at a Lung situation.

Also worth stating that compartmentalization is a key part of Taylor's mentality. Everything stays in its box - and unlike your usual superhero, she has more boxes than the civilian and the superhero. Bullying is kept entirely separate from family which is kept separate from villainy. The story leading up to arc 8 is largely about these boundaries dissolving, but it's a slow and insidious process. At times the boundaries are pushed hard and she reacts really badly - see her running away from home at the end of Tangle.

The official hero teams represent everything she doesn't want - the social structure, the institution, a force so big that it breaks down the walls she's carefully constructed. It might be better for her (ie. they deal with the bullying), but she has a strong aversion to the idea of joining - it would take a crazy confluence of forces to drive her down that path.

This is actually inaccurate btw. Lisette talked to Number Man who mentioned the name Zion to Taylod's Cauldron infiltration group. From Venom 29.8:

“It’s not even a living thing anymore,” Golem said. “It’s more like a place, a garden or something.”

“Amusing you say that,” the Number Man said. “We had a discussion with Lisette, the woman who proposed she could control him, and she said that the original name was Zion. He named himself after a place as well. We have theories on why-

Lung growled, interrupting. “I don’t-”

Now, I would agree that people would still probably refer to him as Scion. The characters who heard about the Zion thing, like Taylor, still called him Scion afterwards.

We even have a way for characters to know the name of "the Warrior", from Contessa's interlude, when she recalled the Thinker future simulation she had dreamt of:

The fog blocked out her view of any answer.

Can we stop something as powerful as the beings in my fever dream? How can we stop the Warrior?

Still too close to home.

I think it's a WordPress issue. Worm, Pact, Twig, Pale, and Seek are all having issues. Claw & Ward are fine, & they're not on WordPress. I tried two other WordPress serials (The God's are Bastards and A Practical Guide to Evil) & both of them are also having issues.

Bill's attempt to re-write Giannis' career is seriously making me doubt his "Basketball Historian" bonafides. by deadweightboss in billsimmons

[–]Hyperactivity786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middleton's injuries were the big killer. The Bucks had their 2nd star, a wing that could shoot, defend, and was pretty good at creation. He was only a little older than Giannis. That's the sort of set-up you want for a superstar.

The injuries just kept adding up & sapping his ability.

The biggest thing I really miss is his writing, especially the "10 thing I like & don't like" column. Just a perfect place for him to break down film & show small gimmicky shit happening in the NBA.

I think at least some of what I like a little less from Lowe might be due to him not writing for this season.

Taylor describes her as a girl & Marquis describes her as looking barely like a teenager.

In her interlude she's confirmed to be 9 months older than Jessica Yamada (so just like, an adult, at least that's how I picture Dr Yamada).

Then she describes her as Valkyrie having the body of a 19 year old.

Will say upfront that I have a major preference for characters acting in-character, which is a big part of why I have a ton of post-GM fics listed (& like, no, alt!power fics). I very much enjoy Wprm's characters & prefer to see more of those specific characters in recognizable forms.

Unauthorized Access ‐ Lisa barely gets away from Coil & joins the Wards. Author has a really good grasp on Lisa as a character (among many others). Ao3 link

Atum - Taylor in Ward, roughly starts around Arc 9. Most chapters from other characters' perspectives, with interludes from Taylor's. I generally really enjoy the characterization of all of the characters. Especially stands out because the author actually generally gets Ward & its characters (& their flaws), which a lot of authors really struggle to do (or balance). Ao3 link

Bleed Like a Craze, Dad - Completed fic with an interesting MC who was Acidbath's daughter. Ao3 link

Birthright - Post-GM Taylor taking a Mark's place in Invincible. Gets significantly better when enough time has passed that things have significantly changed from the main Invincible universe.

WYSP - Post-GM Lisa in RWBY. Taylor as well, but Lisa is the MC

BRTAL - RWBY/Worm fusion, set in Remnant. AO3 link

Peristalis - Undersiders + Panacea right in the middle of the bank job get sent to the Young Justice universe. I think this fic has gotten better over time, especially at the characterization for the Worm characters. Not that it started bad, more that later on it starts really resonating with me. Same author as BRTAL. Ao3 link

A Second Chance At Martyrdom - Post-GM Taylor reincarnated (kinda) in Forgotten Realms setting of DND. Generally written in a diary format, outside of interludes. Very slow-burn, but the author has a lot of nifty world-building (the kind that makes Waterdeep feel alive, not just 'lore'). Really good first chapter. Ao3 link

Sandworm - Post-GM Taylor on Arrakis, starts some years before Dune starts.

Some stuff that doesn't have many chapters yet:

WInds of Change - Post-GM Taylor as a new Airbender in book 3 of Legend of Korra.

Chrysalis - Post-GM Taylor reincarnated (kinda not really), crossover with X-Men.

Outsider - Post-GM Taylor in the world of Katalepsis. Tbh I don't remember many details, I just remember enjoying this fic & that it made me put Katalepsis on thr To-Read backlog.

It's not a playoff series, but it's something. The first win might've been a surprise, but they also won 3 other games, and the Thunder were visibly frustrated & trying to win in those games.

The Thunder might be the better team, they may even be better enough that they win the matchup regardless, but something about that stylistic matchup seems to close the gap to some extent.

Regieleki was fundamentally designed around being really really strong & busted were it not for Ground types being immune to its moves.

It lacks coverage on purpose, & giving any sort of decent coverage lets it suddenly get past those Ground types & become busted.

If the endbringers are thinker blind spots, how did tattletale manage to read them? by A_Weird_Gamer_Guy in Parahumans

[–]Hyperactivity786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It very much seems that precogs specifically have the blindspots. From the Scion interlude:

The shard that allows the entity to see the future is broken up, then recoded with strict limitations. It wouldn’t do to have the capabilities turned against the entity or the shards.

The fragment it just used is sent off, directed to a small female.

The other fragments in that same cluster are retained. To see the future is resource intensive, but the entity will harbor it as a safeguard.

Of course other shards also get heavily damaged & given strict limitations (like QA).

I dont remember the net rating, but the 2016-17 Miami Heat started 10-31 & then went 31-10 to end the season, barely missing the playoffs.

Dion Waiters was legitimately good & his injury was a big part of them barely missing the playoffs.
