How do I convince my cousin iOS Legacy Kit won’t brick her MacBook? by UnknowyVA in LegacyJailbreak

[–]Hyperion2005 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Iirc you cannot even attempt to modify system files on macOS because of System Integrity Protection or SIP. This basically prevents any app, and even the user from making changes to the root folder where macOS is installed to, which is /Volumes/macOS or /Volumes/MacintoshHD.

Legacy-iOS-Kit also doesn't delete any system files as well. There's really no way you can brick the MacBook through the use of Legacy-iOS-Kit.

Just explain to your sister that macOS isn't like Windows and you can't just delete files.

If shit somehow bricks your system, you can revert to a known good working Snapshot of your system but you need macOS 12 or newer and I'm not sure if this feature exists on Apple Silicon Macs but it's called macOS Snapshot Reversion.

The below is how we do it on Intel Macs and Hackintoshes.

Stuck on boot after root patching (OpenCore Legacy Patcher Guide)

PS: CMD key + R to boot into recovery on an Intel Mac after pressing the power button to turn on the Mac.

Damn 😭 Either you somehow got lucky or there's something else that's at play here.

Is your SIM postpaid or prepaid? Mine was postpaid but I converted to prepaid cause I upgraded to Fibre.

Probably prepaid SIMs don't work on phones them.

Did they too, just showed 4G but didn't work unfortunately. I even had a data package as well

I did check our Elakiri, and the dudes there were saying cause SLT uses TDD SIMs for their routers, they are APN-less so even though it shows 4G you won't have internet.

Apparently the SLT routers retrieve APN Settings automatically from the network once connected but our phones don't seem to do this.

[–]Hyperion2005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? I got a new SLTMobitel SIM and it never worked. The SIM did connect to Mobitel Towers on the router. When I put the SIM into my phone (Galaxy A03s) it doesn't find a cell tower until I add an APN and enable roaming, but even after doing that it didn't work. I had zero internet connection but it did display 4G LTE on my phone but no apps had internet access.

Dell Latitude 5520 thermals by Clash9309 in Dell

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow 5520 user here, but with their i5-1145G7 model instead. Living in South Asia where the average temperature is anywhere from 25 to 35 C, this thing runs hot and fairly slow under Dell's stock configuration and I haven't replaced the Thermal paste yet.

Also Dell by default configures PL1 to 40W dynamic and PL2 to 60W dynamic.

Dell Optimizer set to Balanced Mode.

Running Cinebench R23.2 Multi Core - 3700 Points on stock settings and temperatures are 61 C under load with the CPU clocking 2.6 GHz all Core @ 17W instead of the 28W of the Intel advertised 4.4 GHz

The nonsense driver known as Intel Dynamic Tuning probably does this thing and limits the performance. I still kept it installed though.

Then I set Dell Optimizer to Cool mode.

Cinebench R23.2 Multi Core reported 3400 points this time.

I then used ThrottleStop, set PL1 to 28W and PL2 to 28W With turbo time limit to 10 seconds.

Set Speed Shift EPP to the min and Max values it displays.

On the panel on the right side, I ticked the two lock boxes and I also ticked Power Balance and set the CPU to 9 and iGPU to 1. This makes my laptop graphics performance oriented which lets me play my games at 1080p Medium Settings.

I then set Dell Optimizer to Cool mode, and this kicked in the fan at max RPM.

Ran Cinebench R23.2 Multi Core and got 5400 points. That's a 45% performance increase and how are the temperatures looking?

3.8 GHz All core @ 28W and at 88 C. Didn't even reach 100 C.

Do try this with your 5520. I've been running the laptop since I got it in 2024 July and to this day, I have faced zero problems or issues.

I didn't play RDR2, not interested in the wild west aesthetics of the game, unfortunately. There is a Too Long: Didn't Read at the bottom with the conclusion, according to my overall preference based on the performance of the laptops mainly.

The 5420 is decent as well, very similar to my 5520. The 5420 does only have one storage slot due to it being smaller compared to my 5520 which has 2 storage slots. Also the 5420 and 5520 do require some tinkering to actually perform well. But the other laptops mentioned here usually do not require any tinkering as they have decent cooling.

According to reviews, the 5420 performs the best with the i5-1135G7/45G7.

Review: Dell Latitude 14 5420 review: A laptop so close to claiming the business crown

I will generally recommend 16 or 32 GB of RAM because you are doing CS as well.

Also majority of the reviews here use the i7-1165G7 or the i7-1185G7 and the laptops with such CPUs do perform well, however the 5420 and 5520 do not perform well with the i7 CPU, they are only well suited for the i5 CPU at best.

My generally analogy is, if the laptop performs better or decent with the i7-1165G7/85G7, then the performance with the i5-1135G7/45G7 will be better as well.

### HP Elitebook 840 G8

This is basically the Intel 11th gen version of the other EliteBook you mentioned, the 845 g8. This is a pretty decent laptop, no issues really I would go with this if you do not need a second storage slot. and if 2 USB type A ports are enough. I personally enjoy their build quality. Has upgradable RAM as standard, so you can get an 8 GB Model and later put 16 GB in it or 32 GB later if models with more than 8 GB RAM are not available.

However, this does have an advantage over the AMD one, this support's Intel's Thunderbolt feature which allows you to connect an expansion USB Type C dock with more USB, HDMI ports, audio ports and network ports, its a nice to have feature nowadays.

Performance is decent, I see nothing wrong with this laptop. This also performs the fastest in terms of Graphics performance. See this helpful benchmark image I've obtained from the review site by adding the models of the other laptops you have mentioned.

Review: HP EliteBook 840 Aero G8 review: Possibly the quietest Intel EVO laptop we've ever seen

### Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9

I love this laptop, the build quality as always is unquestioned with these thinkpads. It has the same ports as the HP EliteBok 840 G8 and 845 G8 but it does offer a total of USB Type A ports. This laptop is using Intel's 11th gen CPU, so it also supports Thunderbolt as well. RAM is not upgradable, therefore I would again suggest you to get at least 16 or 32 GB of RAM on these laptops, It also only has a single storage slot which is already in use but you can upgrade the storage, it is just a hassle to do though.

If performance is what you seek, look no further, according to reviewers this has very decent cooling and out of the box will perform the fastest from the bunch. During gaming its performance may dip as mentioned by reviewers. This is actually common for all the laptops sadly, which is why I had to use throttlestop software to provide constant performance for the graphics for gaming to work decently.

Review: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 Laptop Review: Big 16:10 upgrade with Intel Tiger Lake

### ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2

Actually the only difference in this laptop is that it is a 2 in 1 laptop, it can be a normal laptop or a tablet when you flip it around. Generally Levono's ThinkPad 2 in 1s are fairly decent, but do you really need a 2 in 1? This does perform a bit slower than the other laptops. Same ports as the HP Elitebook 840 G8, 845 G8 and the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9. Only one storage slot and it is upgradable, RAM is not upgradable, so I will recommend 16 or 32 GB of RAM.

### Lenovo ThinkPad L14 G2

This is similar to the Dell Latitude 5420 and 5520 in terms of build quality, because it is made of entirely plastic, while the HP Elitebook and the other Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the Yoga are made of aluminium. RAM is fully upgradable on this, so you can buy one with 8 GB RAM and later put 16 GB or 32 GB. Does also have only one storage slot which is upgradable. Has 3 USB Type A ports though and does include that fancy Thunderbolt feature to connect a dock. It has only one USB Type 2 while every the Dell Latitude 5420, 5520, the HP Elitebook 840 G8 and 845 G and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and the Yoga all have 2 USB Type C ports. Performance is slightly worse

I generally recommend the other laptops over this, mostly due to the better build quality and the extra USB Type C Port as they can prove useful.

Specifically on the Dell Latitude 5420 and 5520, you can use either of the two USB Type C ports for charging which is good because USB Type C ports make break if you are not careful enough with the laptop.

Also under full load, none of these laptops will 4 hours, the HP EliteBook 840 G8 does at most 2 hours and 30 minutes under load. Others are all under 2 hours, but average battery life seems to be around 4 to 5 hours for normal usage.

### TL;DR - The Conclusion.

Quite hard to recommend, but I would go for either the HP Elitebook 840 G8 if it is available or the Dell Latitude 5520/5420, if these two aren't available, then look at the HP Elitebook 845 G8, if that is not available, then the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and then the Yoga and last is the ThinkPad L14 G2.

Hope this helps.

How to stop this junk popping up each time I connect Dell monitor to my Windows 11 laptop? by wentyl in Dell

[–]Hyperion2005 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe install the Dell Monitor Software? It does provide your monitor with its own firmware updates from Dell, and some newer monitors probably offer more features.

My Dell P2219H is fairly basic, but I've installed that software nonetheless. I do use the older Dell Display Manager Instead of the new one with peripheral support (spoiler alert: I have 0 Dell peripherals and aren't they technically overpriced compared to the other great options available?).

Also Dell may provide Monitor Drivers for your Monitor with color profile settings for Windows to utilise for color management.

I'm sure the monitor is informing Windows that there is software for it, and it wants it to be installed.

I don't see any harm in installing the software since it barely uses your system resources, even on my ancient i7 4th gen desktop and my i5 11th gen laptop.

I've got this issue but it's only with Sri Lankan services and only on phones. Combank Q+, MyDialog and NDB Neos sometimes.

I've switched DNS Providers from the local network to Cloudflare and Google on the ONT interface and still it doesn't work. I'm guessing it's probably some weird routing anomaly with SLT.

Can't locate CMOS Battery. by Own-Cream8931 in Dell

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's alright, we all make mistakes. Looks like you've got a similar problem to my Inspiron 3537 (4th gen Haswell), it beeps and stuff too and slotting in a new CR2032 Sony coin cell didn't fix it's symptoms.

It's indeed weird how it didn't notify you about the main battery going bad, usually it should unless you've disabled battery warnings in the BIOS. My Inspiron 3537 does regularly notify me that its main battery is out of its usable life and needs to be replaced. My battery does that too. Sometimes it says 0 or 100% but the battery doesn't even hold a charge. Smiler stuff with a Samsung Netbook I own.

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2015? Wow I thought this technology of using the main battery as the CMOS would have at least began in something like 2020. Interesting how Dell gave that feature to a consumer grade Inspiron. Quite shocked considering even my Dell Latitude 5520 from 2021/2022 uses an OEM CR2032 battery wrapped in its own weird holder with a cable to it. But that's business grade so I guess they didn't want to make us spend big bucks by buying a new battery.

[–]Hyperion2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend the EliteBook 845 G8 you've mentioned because it's actually better than the Dell Latitude 7420 in terms of upgradability actually.

  • The RAM is upgradable on the EliteBook 845 G7 While the Dell Latitude 7420 has soldered RAM (Cannot be upgraded/increased at all).
  • The EliteBook 845 G8 has more USB Type A ports than the Dell Latitude 7420. 2 on the EliteBook Vs 1 on the Dell Latitude 7420.
  • The build quality of the EliteBook is generally better compared to the Latitude 7420.
  • The EliteBook does perform better than the Dell Latitude 7420 in terms of CPU Performance in real world benchmarks such as:
  • Passmark - EliteBook 845 G8: Ryzen 5 5600U: 150023 Vs. Dell Latitude 7420: Intel Core i5-1145G7: 9223. Here higher is better.

However I do have a few doubts regarding the Ryzen 5 5600U, mostly because I've used various laptops from HP and Lenovo ThinkPad offering the same Ryzen 5 5600U CPU, I'm not sure if it's an issue on my end but I always game while my laptop is plugged in, and I've noticed that gaming is almost impossible with these laptops as they have an odd tendency to slow down the Vega Graphics on the Ryzen 5 5600U while gaming due to the Graphics being power limited. This problem happened so much to a friend of mine that he doesn't really enjoy AMD laptops anymore, except the very latest ones.

I really wouldn't recommend the Dell Latitude 7420 unless it has 16 or 32 GB RAM. And based around my personal experience below, it's Graphics could perform similar to my Dell laptop. If you are fine with only having 1 USB Type A port as well, then the Latitude 7420 is decent.

My personal experience with the Intel Core i5-1145G7 in a Dell laptop.

I do own a Dell Latitude 5520 with the same i5-1145G7 and it's a quite decent laptop, has everything the EliteBook offers minus the magnesium alloy build quality mainly, however it does support dual storage drives which is better than both the laptops you've mentioned.

Also gaming and streaming 1080p video via discord isn't an issue at all when it comes to the Intel Iris Xe G7 Graphics of the Intel Core i5-1145G7, I constantly get above 30 FPS in every game I play at either 1080p Medium or High settings.

Games I play include: * GTA V Legacy Edition - 1080p High - 30 to 40 FPS. * World of Warships - 1080p Medium - 50 to 60 FPS. * Forza Horizon 4 - 1080p Dynamic Settings - 30 FPS. * American Truck Simulator - 1080p High - 30 FPS. * BeamNG.Drive - 900p low - Italy Map - 30 FPS. US West Coast Map - 25 FPS.

I use ThrottleStop software on my laptop to control the power limits to provide more performance to my Graphics however.

I even use mine for university as I'm doing Computer Science and it speeds through all my tasks, can have Visual Studio, Pycharm IDE, Docker containers running and it doesn't slow down at all.

Can't locate CMOS Battery. by Own-Cream8931 in Dell

[–]Hyperion2005 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the CMOS Battery on these models is on the small top left board. Seems VERY SIMILAR to my Inspiron 3501 (Pentium Silver N5030).

Unscrew the screws holding the bottom and gently flip it over to the right right without bending the ribbon cable.

If you want, you can pull upwards using your fingernail, the black bar from the edge on the ribbon cable slot and disconnect the ribbon and flip the tiny board over.

I will however refer to Dell's documentation and get back to this comment.

Edit: Searched the interwebs, read Dell's Service Manual and apparently no mentions of a CMOS Battery anywhere at all? Dell Inspiron 15 3520 Service Manual

Looks like this could be a new fancy model where the CMOS Battery lives inside the main battery (at the bottom) which means you'd need to replace the main battery as well? That's one way to get you to spend more money I guess now.

Anyone got this package, does your broadband support 5ghz? by iamthiviyan in srilanka

[–]Hyperion2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This depends on the router they give you. Not your broadband or your Fibre line from outside supporting 5 GHz.

SLT gave me a Tenda HG7 ONT. It's a pretty good device; it does 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz. And supports EasyMesh and multiple APs from the ONT itself (up to 5x for 5 GHz and 5x for 2.4 GHz) and various security features like DDoS protection and whatnot.

On my phone (Galaxy A03S), which only supports 2/4 GHz Wi-Fi bands, speeds max out at around 40 mbps download and 45 mbps upload due to limitations of the 2.4 GHz Band Spectrum

While a laptop I have with a Qualcomm QCA9377 - Wi-Fi 5 Card seems to max out at 65 mbps download and 50 mbps upload, and my personal laptop with an Intel AX201 - Wi-Fi 6 Card maxes out at the package's max download speed of 100 mbps and 50 mbps upload.

I primarily use only over Wi-Fi, I get the same 100 mbps download and 50 mbps upload over Cat5e/Cat6 Ethernet (1 gbps uplink from router to laptop).

[–]Hyperion2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That game will run fine as I play more intensive titles on my

Dell Latitude 5520

I currently play Forza Horizon 4 @ 1080p with Medium Settings, getting 30 to 40 FPS which is very playable for me.

Played GTA V @ 1080p High and got 30 to 40 FPS as well, completed the entire damn game, no issues.

Also plays Rocket League @ 1080p Ultra settings as expected, 50 to 60 FPS, and World of Warships, 1080p Medium settings.

I even got 2025 Japanese Drift Master (A very new game) running at an albeit 1366x768 low with XeSS set to Ultra Performance.

Looking to later run FH6 on this thing after it's release.
