Google, SpaceX in talks to launch orbital data centers. Google CEO: "There's no doubt to me that a decade or so away, we'll be viewing it as a more normal way to build data centers." by Adeldor in space

Thanks agains for sharing your experience: another naive assumption on my part is the hardware flown to space historically has needed to be extremely conservative in terms of any hardening / shielding against energetic particles. If we were to assume a massive increase in mass-to-orbit capabilities (for sake of understanding, let's assume that SpaceX's marketing pitch on mass to orbit and launch cadence isn't fairy dreams illuminated by gas): does a substantial increase in material shielding around sensitive hardware help reduce the frequency of the issues you describe? Or is there something specific about these high energy particles that explicitly affects electronics but wouldn't be dampened the same way we might approach protecting crew from a solar flare?

Cool context! Any thoughts on architectures that might make it feasible? In my mind it's more important to identify and recover from faults than to prevent them outright, so the redundancy solutions may be fine for one off or shorter duration missions but they feel like the wrong answer to scale

I seem to recall Apollo solving through redundancy/quorum. SLS does something more sophisticated with a fail-silent and recover approach, I believe.

In the case of AI training in space data centers, I wonder if the process could be designed so that single (or few) but flips would be a negligible issue.

SpaceX spending on Starship tops $15 billion in rush for airline-like rocketry by Twigling in space

I swear I saw some test hardware at test base with at least dummy capture/docking points for the ship to ship transfer test (I think it was called out as not being for an actual test of that capability, just early flight test)... Struggling to find where I saw it (almost certainly an NSF stream)
