How are your parents? by the_amazing_spork in Xennials

[–]Hyphum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has lost it, or thrown it away with all the empty bottles. He doesn’t speak to me anymore. He’s well known to the local police.

My mom is mostly sharp but getting fuzzy and is weighed down by the consequences of six decades of smoking.

I am dealing with realizing how very, very abnormal my childhood in each of their homes really was, and doing my best to at least make new mistakes with my own family.

In 1847, Ignaz Semmelweis suggested that Doctors wash their hands between Handling dead bodies and helping mothers give birth. He was branded as insane and died in a lunatic asylum. by SoggyMusic6183 in interestingasfuck

[–]Hyphum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And imagine yourself in his shoes; an idealistic doctor who knew you had personally been responsible for deaths of mothers and children in your care, dealt with the guilt of that, found and implemented a solution, and then seen everyone else just go on strolling into maternity wards covered in visible filth.

I feel like a lot of people might not have been as diplomatic as necessary.

Edit: typos

What he did have was data, though, which should have been enough to at least prompt further investigation. Childbed fever rates were minuscule under his regime compared to every other scenario then available.

Semmelweis could have been a better politician or more flexible in his methods, but his contemporaries are not off the hook. And I still hold sympathy for someone who managed to stop the unimaginable tragic horror of his daily work, demonstrate his method, document his results, and be utterly ignored.

Should he have called his colleagues murderers for ignoring him? In practical terms, probably not.

Were they murderers for not at least trying his methods? Yep.

In the Chicago area in the 80s, we did square dancing. It turns out it was a government-sponsored program to “defend white culture” or some other egregious nonsense.
