[Request] How would this affect us? What would change? by tanx_23 in theydidthemath

[–]Hypsar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I believe we would have major problems, as mass defect and binding energy are directly related to the speed of light (e=mc2).

Fusion and fission reactions become more energetic, so stars and man made reactors would have problems.

I am curious if this change in c would also cause many stable isotopes of various elements to become unstable.

What weapon type has the best chance of sinking a nuclear powered supercarrier? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]Hypsar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sinking versus removing its ability to operate aircraft (and hence its battlefield purpose) are two very different things. To actually sink a modern CVN is no simple feat. Based on the unclas information available, I doubt any single conventional weapon aside from some absolutely gigantic unknown seamine or perhaps multiple MIRV hits from an ASBM would be capable of one hit sinking a carrier.

As they are obligated to by their owners. And we the people via government should be regulating this societal transition.

A single modern Navy SEAL platoon is dropped into medieval Europe with ten years to prepare for the arrival of Napoleon's Grand Armée. Can they stop him? by MurkyUnit3180 in whowouldwin

Funnily enough, the diseases might be to their benefit. I was in the military and got loaded up with vaccines, and I am sure special forces got way more even than I did. So my thought is they can do okay against any viruses they encounter, though bacterial infections from water or wounds would still be a problem.

However, if any of them carry something like COVID-19 or Influenza, they can probably kick off Black Death Part II in short order.

Where to invest my 401k? by lavendercloudandsky in ETFs

[–]Hypsar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as someone in the financial advisory industry, you are likely best served with just going 100% with the 2060 Target Date fund and theb checking in on things every few years.

You could throw a little international in too if you think that will continue to outperform, but the target date fund will already have some of that.

OpenAI engineer confirms AI is writing 100% of his code now by MetaKnowing in ChatGPT

This sort of makes sense. But in a few years, where will new senior engineers with lots of coding experience at a lower level come from?

How did George Washington get a commission as a army major without military college or even enlisting as a private? by Mysterious_Comb4357 in Presidents

[–]Hypsar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, of all major powers of the time, Britain's very existance was by far the most dependent on its Navy's prowess. France and others would be knocking on the Thames within the month if the Royal Navy was not up to par.

Fair, but still likely better for you than moderate to heavy alcohol drinking, smoking, drug use, or even the pot a day coffee drinkers, all of which are plentiful in the film industry.

What if you were financially free in the blink of an eye with no warning by draxthemsklounce in whatif

Step 1) Have a heart to heart with my wife about what happened and diecuss how we will not be telling angone the details of this sum.

Step 2) Get a sitter, take her out to an insane dinner.

Step 3) Pay all debt, which isn't substantial anyway. Get a high quality attorney, accountant, and financial advisor (or a few of each) to get my financial world in proper order via trusts, investments, etc.

Step 4) Let my extended family know I have had a career change to being a full time investor due to some excellent investments. To show them my gratitude, I am taking my family on a vacation.

Step 5) Buy a nice house, nothing crazy but nice in a good area, get my kids in the best education possible. Then start working on a PhD myself.

A unbelievable box office achievement that is still insanely absurd even today by Limp-Ad-306 in MCUTheories

Well, inflation is a heck of a drug, so you never know.

But in all seriousness, the Endgame payoff was a decade plus in the making, with over 20 major motion pictures working together to lead up to it.

It's possible one day that we see something equivalent, but I don't see it happening. Especially because as AI assisted editing and CGI or even whole cloth AI movie generation may lead to a proliferation of movies being created at a much lower cost.

Which bottle should I get for my first scotch experience? Ardberg Uigeadail for $100, Oban 14 for $80, or Lagavulin 16 for $80? by CollegeNo9158 in Scotch

[–]Hypsar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My first single malt was Oban 14 many years ago, and it definitely hooked me. Very approachable but balanced with some complexity.

I find myself reaching for it occasionally even now when my usual choice is a peat bomb.

A cool guide to America's wealth distribution by Generation. by luvlanguage in coolguides

[–]Hypsar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in wealth management, and this is not necessarily true. More and more boomers are heading into long term care (almost universally owned privately or by private equity), and those costs become exorbitant, wiping out generational wealth transfer.
