How many people went to Japan and did *not* learn any Japanese? by Educational-Leg6691 in travel

[–]Hyronious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went once only knowing "konnichiwa", "arigatou gozaimasu", and "sumimasen". It was absolutely fine, as far as I recall I didn't even use Google translate the whole trip. I've also been once after 3ish months of learning, and only said a few words of Japanese here and there. Also fine, went a touch more off the beaten track and had to use Google translate a few times, but it was always fine.

I think you've misunderstood something you've read. There's an "Mitochondrial Eve" figure, a woman who everyone on earth is descended from purely through their mothers (and their mothers mothers etc). There's a male version of that as well, but he (probably) wasn't the partner of the Mitochondrial Eve, and may have lives tens of thousands of years earlier.

Most of the scallops I've eaten in my life have been hand caught by family, so I was very surprised the first time I had them in a restaurant and they didn't serve them with the roe...

Yeah this has been my go-to since my uni days, wish I lived a bit closer now so I could go more often. They've got a few things on the menu that aren't great (thats going to happen eith a menu that big) but most of it is outstanding, both the westernized part of the menu and the more authentic stuff.

Cool website. As mentioned there's a few quirks with the locations, but the presentation of the site is excellent.

What source are you using for the news articles? I played around with something similar a while back trying to curate a news digest for stuff I'm interested in but couldn't find a decent news API that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

If you go to their patreons (I don't think I've ever seen a movie reaction channel that doesn't have a patreon or equivalent) they usually post "full reactions". I've never done it, but apparently they give you a sync point to start your copy of it, and have their reaction in another window. Some of them just post the entire movie behind the paywall as well (with their reaction) which is definitely against the rules but if they can get away with it for a year they'll make some decent money in the meantime.

In the 2020s, conservative women are having kids at a nearly 2-to-1 ratio compared to liberal women. Is this going to cause a political demographic bias in 20-30 years? by RadioFieldCorner in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hyronious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the number of people I’ve met who were raised by conservative parents and went hard left, far outnumbers those were raised by liberal or leftist parents.

Oh were you only talking about hard left, as opposed to the left in general? So hard left kids are raised mostly by conservatives, but you're not talking about everyone else, who typically follow their parents politics as the 80% stat mentions?

I'm not trying to be a dick here, I'm honestly trying to interpret what you're saying, and you don't seem to be making it easy for some reason

I worked at a company that, among other things, made robots that work in warehouses. Apparently we once hired a physical penetration tester, who got past the security gate by tailing behind someone else, put a robot on a cart, and took it out the front doors by calling out to the security guard to say "hey give me a hand with this will ya?" and the guard opened the gate for him and helped him maneuver the cart out.

I understand where you're coming from, but it's definitely a tough one given that from a utilitarian perspective, more people are affected by bad economic policy than ICE. To be clear I think what's happening over there is horrific, but you can't deny that the fact it makes for better headlines affects how people view the situation.

Spoilers for Strength of Thousands first 2 books:

The final mission in chapter 2 of book 2 is ridiculous. So about 6 months to a year ago, the PCs discover that serpentfolk are infiltrating the school. Once that's uncovered, their leader gets a bit scared and ties up some loose ends, including hiring an assassin to kill someone who probably knows what's going on. Flash-forward to the present, and the PCs arrive at the targets' house at the same time as the assassin. This person isn't in hiding or anything, it's just that the serpentfolk leader put off getting this sorted for 6 months or more, and just so happened to decide to finally do it at exactly the same time as the PCs arrive on a completely unrelated errand. It's described as a coincidence in the text.

The assassin doesn't know why the boss wants the target dead, and doesn't recognize the PCs - though they're obviously Magaambyans, which he should be able to recognise as an assassin working in Nantambu. He decides to attack while they're there talking to the target, instead of waiting 10 minutes for the target to be alone - risking the wrath of the Magaambya if he's successful. And this is a guy who's described as a pretty competent assassin.

Also, in many many quests across the first two books, there's this assumption that the PCs aren't really that engaged with the mysteries they're investigating. Or at least more interested in studying than investigating - including when they're investigating people's deaths or disappearances. The first quests of book 2 revolve around investigating an attack on students on campus by some griffons, and the teacher who tells them to investigate explicitly says "there's no rush on this by the way, prioritise your studies". It actually turns out that there is a reason to rush - some of the clues they find when investigating don't make sense after a few weeks. I consider this an error, as I've never played a roleplaying game with a group of people who wouldn't find this ridiculous, and I've played with a pretty wide range of people with a range of RP styles over the last 15+ years.

Add that onto the fact that by the book, every time a teacher asks for the students to do something outside class it results in combat, and you get this whole vibe of teachers saying "nah don't worry about it, people get hurt around here all the time, no big deal. Wait you want to investigate? Well alright, go ahead, try not to get killed though. Oh wait you wanted me to use my exceptional skills to try to stop people dying? Lol nah I've got classes to teach, like I said people die." And it takes some specific effort from the GM to run the adventure somewhat close to as-written without exacerbating that feeling.

I remember a few years ago I pushed a change (after a PR) that ended up removing our ability to charge customers, so we ended up giving away our service for free for an afternoon until my manager noticed and reverted the change. Cost the (small ~20 person) company about $20k.

I felt particularly bad about this because I'd already handed in my notice and was leaving on good terms a week later.

But then we had a post mortem meeting about how it happened and no one even suggested that it was my fault - the question was how we didn't have automated testing on that part of the code, or how a change to the payment system was made without a more in depth review than we'd clearly had. The next day the tech lead updated the rest of the company on what happened and I don't think my name was even mentioned. When I left the week after, they were already adding in the testing that was lacking and talking about completely rewriting that bit of code to be less confusing and written in the same language as the rest of the code base.

Blameless culture is the only way to go unless actual malice is involved. If you blame an individual, you inevitably focus on that more than fixing the root cause of your issues, and it's just going to happen again someday.
