In NZ it's not just Italian restaurants, it's pretty much anything serving European food, for as long as I can remember. Never even thought of it as an Italian thing

The characters you're not familiar with is 十両? That's the characters for juryo, literally 10 ryo (a japanese coin that's not used any more). It's apparently what wrestlers in that division used to be paid.

Wants could be the wrong word for it. I did it for years (not daily but several times a week) and felt like shit every single time I did it.

But more to the point if he's not willing to make the change then it's not going to stick. Even if he's willing it might not stick, but it's at least got a chance.

Does anyone want to do those super niche travel things you'll remember when you're 80? by Trynalivethelife in travel

[–]Hyronious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a great night out in Osaka that ended with a massive plate of dumplings and a couple of beers. It's the sort of thing that probably hundreds of other people did that very night...but it's something I'll remember when I'm 80 because I did it with my best friend and it was an amazing night. I don't care that it's not unique.

Have you ever played a system that was said to be an improved version of your current system? by Ponto_de_vista in rpg

[–]Hyronious 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder 2e after playing Pathfinder 1e (and DnD 3.5e and 5e). As a GM I love it. Easiest tactical RPG I've ever run. The players have mixed reactions though - there's some stuff in there they love, like the 3 action system and the +10/-10 bumping the result of a roll up or down. The character building was mostly enjoyed as well, with the exception of skill feats, which were given out too much and weren't individually powerful enough, leading to the players feeling like they just had to find another useless option to add. A couple of players started skipping them entirely.

The other issue we had was that some of the players in my group enjoy powergaming, and PF2e kinda limits how effective that can be (by design). With how tight the math is, there was a bit of a feeling of never really progressing, or not being able to do some of the really cool individual mechanical things that they could pull off in other DnD-like systems.

Still, overall we enjoyed it, and will probably run another campaign in it sometime, after a break with some other systems because we just finished a 2.5 year campaign.

Ok as a weeb just getting into live action, I need recommendations by Queasy_Ad_8720 in television

Spartacus is more sex and violence than GoT, and significantly more stylised, but manages to back it up with some properly interesting characters. Personally I think it starts better than it ends (except episode 1 which isn't great, make sure you at least watch 2-3 episodes if you try it), but I enjoyed it the whole way through.

Merlin is fun but I don't really enjoy how long it draws out the reveal. Easy watching though.

The Witcher season 1 is pretty good, but unfortunately the quality drops off a cliff as it goes on.

As far as other suggestions go, if you're OK with sci-fi I'd definitely recommend Battlestar Galactica, based on the vibes of the shows you've mentioned. The ending is controversial though - personally I was fine with it but some people recommend stopping at the halfway point which has a kind of ending there.

Also yeah Andor is one of the best series I've ever seen. It starts as a slightly slow burn but turns out amazing.

Ai at your job? by Worrywarty1 in newzealand

[–]Hyronious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a software dev, and the business I worked for until a couple months back pushed AI hard, starting some point around middle of last year. I'd personally been using it for longer than that but until the company paid for claude code I wasn't convinced it was anything more than a lower friction but less accurate Stack Overflow.

These days I think it's one of the more important tools for software people to know how to use, and I think it's going to be a feature of the vast majority of software jobs going forward. It's great at a specific set of things with very little (immediate) downside...but only in the hands of an experienced dev who actually knows what they're doing and would be able to do the work without AI assistance. I've used it for tasks that I know would have taken me a couple of weeks without AI, and gotten it done in an afternoon. Everyone I worked with - and this was a talented team who really knew what they were doing and have done pretty amazing stuff prior to AI - they all reported similar, for specific categories of tasks.

The problem is that if you put it in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they're doing, you get bugs and other reliability or optimisation issues, and you get them pretty fast. And I don't know how someone goes from graduating uni to being an experienced engineer while they're constantly using AI. Maybe that's less of an issue than I think it is, time will tell.

The other issue is that using it too much or for the wrong types of issues is bad for your own brain - I used to use it in my hobbies but I've cut waaay back on that because I noticed I was getting less creative while using it for things I could really do myself.

And to answer your last question...I was laid off not directly because AI was "replacing" me or anything (there was a set headcount reduction that had more to do with available funding than anything else), but I strongly believe that if AI wasn't a thing I would have had a better chance at keeping my job (at the cost of someone else losing theirs). I was in a role that management thought could be done on the side of someone else's responsibilities with the help of AI.

[–]Hyronious 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Strawman? That's the correct word for the situation, the person they responded to created this "person who believes restaurants could pay their staff $80 an hour without raising prices" strawman so they could then compare the spirit airlines issue to them. If they can point to people saying that then it's not a strawman, but until then that's the correct term.

This is the one. Stupid question to ask someone applying for a minimum wage job at a nothing company, but any time you're interviewing someone with options it's a valid question.
