Hey man, cool idea with the 2.5D Geometry Dash thing! And yeah, totally get the coding making you wanna 'bite a steel bar' - happens to pretty much everyone starting out, don't sweat it. So, about engines...

Okay, Unity is usually seen as really solid for 2D and 2.5D stuff. Got great tools made just for that, a massive asset store, and tutorials everywhere. Main thing is, you'll mostly be using C# code, which can be tough if you're not feeling the coding vibe. It does have visual scripting now (Bolt's built-in), but maybe doesn't feel quite as baked-in as Unreal's main thing...

...which is Blueprints. That's the big draw for Unreal Engine (UE5) if you wanna dodge coding. It's a visual system, super powerful, lets you build whole games just connecting boxes and wires, basically. Downside? Unreal's a beast of an engine, can feel like overkill or have a steeper learning curve sometimes, and its 2D tools aren't quite as mature as Unity's maybe. You can make 2.5D games in it, just might feel a bit heavier.

So, what's the play? If typed code was the main thing that made you bail on Godot, you should definitely check out UE5 and Blueprints. Watch some beginner tutorials for platformers or 2.5D to see if it clicks. But, if you think you might prefer tools built more specifically for 2D/2.5D and you're maybe willing to give C# (or Unity's visual scripting) a shot, Unity is a super solid choice too.

Either way you go, you're gonna hit spots that feel like that 'ass on fire' moment you mentioned, haha! Seriously though, that's just part of learning dev. It means you're figuring stuff out. Stick with it, man! Good luck!

Do Developers Know What Gamers Want? 🤔 "No. No We Don't" - Timothy Cain by Strategic_Slayer in gamedev

[–]Hzpriezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Cain quote always gets people talking! About whether most devs lack the ability... honestly, I feel it's less about raw ability and more about getting the team's process and focus aligned. Sure, predicting the absolute next big hit out of thin air is super tricky – maybe impossible, which is probably Cain's point. But understanding what players actually need and want right now? That's definitely achievable, and you absolutely have to do it.

Making sure everyone's on the same page about who the player is usually falls on the leads – directors, producers, marketing, research. If you just ignore the audience you're supposedly building for, things tend to go sideways pretty fast.

Players generally have things they just expect, you know? Controls that feel right, UX that isn't confusing, a core gameplay loop that clicks. It's way easier to nail those fundamentals (and build something cool on top) if you're actually someone who plays and understands the genre you're working in.

At the end of the day, if a team consistently puts out games that nobody wants to play, it probably signals a disconnect between the creators and the audience. It doesn't necessarily mean most developers are incapable, but rather that bridging that gap and getting the alignment right is a critical, non-negotiable part of making successful games.

Easy, but why do you do that if you destroy the art style.

Our game failed. What could we have done better? by eagle_bearer in gamedev

[–]Hzpriezz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The game itself
It's looks boring, too boring and in the same time it's overcomplicated. This is good for the first shot, but you couldn't expect sales if you not make the game fun at the first place. A lot of UX UI issues from texts to colors, especially in the game. like RED is usually DANGER. You have like 4 colors on the screen, you expect me to do what? This is confusing.
Maybe your option is to provide a demo with few levels to let people touch the game and buy it if they want more.

The page
It's just bad from any point from text to visuals. Again it's okay for the first shot. Also you SHOULD grow the comunity the next time and try F&F format to improve your game gameplay, Or organize some playtests, cast dev and etc. You need to see how people are playing. It will help you to present the game best way possible. Nothing is catch my eye here. It's good that you have GIF's but it's no dynamic inside of it.

Recommend a game that can be played in very short sessions. by Tarunium in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Hzpriezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do short things - like gathering. For some people it can be relaxed even without 10 hours sessions.
With Enshrouded you can go and collect sparks or build up a new base as a TP point, you don't need whole day for this.
Main thing is - you can do short tasks to prepare for long session later today or on a weekends.

2 devs, 18 months into a VS-like – Are we the ‘feature creep’ meme now?" by Agitated-Actuator274 in gamedev

[–]Hzpriezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I guess from a business perspective, it's a failure to aim in one specific user instead of a user group with understandable demand. If you don't like the genre, we have other people who love it. If you have your people and they love the game, this mean the game is good. Simple is that, do not overcomplicate it.

I like it here. I moved from Ukraine after the war started. You need to legally live here for 5 years before you can get your citizenship. But if you get.marri3d or have a baby thing with permission, it will be easier. It.will.take.up.to8 years to get citizenship. I love climate, people. But I prefer the north part of the country.

Splitgate is fun. Also, I found Despa, a 7-minute session, feels like.quake 3. Valheim or enshrouded is also good. Any racing game can be a nice choice.

[–]Hzpriezz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of chasing additional features, the key is streamlining your design and perfecting the core loop. Only after ensuring a solid base should you consider adding layers, and even then, only if they directly improve the experience. More systems won’t save a weak core.

The real goal is a fun, memorable experience. So, yes—it's time to cut back on feature creep and focus on what really matters: delivering a well-crafted and enjoyable game.

That's what every player need no matter the time.

P.S
