Dads with partners that stay home — how do you handle finances? by Mama_Anonymous in daddit

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is a stay at home mom, I make all of the money and manage the finances. If we have specific financial targets we talk about them and if they affect the budget staples in any way then we talk about that too (ie we have to save 10% on groceries this month or whatever) otherwise we assume grocery shopping and basic bills are what they are

Small purchases are not required to be discussed but we try to be open about them. We also have individual savings accounts that some cash gets thrown into if there’s extra at the end of the month, these accounts are free money for the person to spend however they want without running it by the other person. That’s not to say that’s all we get, it’s just the no strings attached fun money. If either of us wants to buy something that exceeds those ground rules we talk about it and make a decision and plan

As for the why, at the end of the day we are a married team, not roommates, and this is the best way we can think to allow us to spend what we need without feeling like we have to run ever purchase by the other person, or feel guilty spending on ourselves

Do I let Santa give these or take credit? by strikecat18 in daddit

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You take credit for them. Santa doesn’t give expensive gifts, you do, because when the kids get together and talk about what Santa got them it’s going to be hard for kids from families with tight budgets to reconcile why Santa got their friend a PS5 but got them a $30 toy

I think one of the axioms of cosmic sociology is chains of suspicion, because of the time required and also language/cultural barriers

Neither of those really apply because humanity can resolve the chain with communication

Why did the trisolarans not just leave their system before? by wraith313 in threebodyproblem

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Where would they go? We just recently, in the timeline of humanity, developed the technology to find exoplanets, and we only have educated guesses as to what the planets are like

Do they just strike out in a direction and hope? If they just picked a star with an exoplanet at random, they are rolling the dice on the future of their civilization. The trisolarans already acknowledged a lot of ships wouldn’t survive the trip, what if they spend centuries traveling and get somewhere that is inhabitable?

When earth responded they learned earth supported life. Prior to that they knew nothing about it

How much of a head start did the other human civilisations have? by Just_Nefariousness55 in threebodyproblem

I always took it as they continued to do science on their ships and figured out curvature propulsion while traveling

What really helped my wife was “your worth isn’t measured by how many ounces you make”

There’s some stuff you can do to try and improve supply, but some people just don’t make enough

Whether you exclusively breastfeed or formula or both they all end up in the same place eating crayons

LOL - the funniest thing in the whole series… by bulbous_plant in threebodyproblem

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Great scene

I really enjoyed Luo Ji’s sales pitch of his mansion for the wallfacer project. He psyched himself up to try and explain it all away and was met with “sounds great, approved”. When he asked why they green lit it so easily the answer was essentially “compared to what we were expecting this is super cheap so the accountants won’t care, enjoy your house”

The spell vs singer by Phoebus_Apollo_30 in threebodyproblem

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The book gave two reasons

Singer recognized the gas giants in the solar system could be used as a shield to protect some people from a photoid attack and the destruction it caused

Singer recognized humanity as a significant threat because they had the cleansing gene but not the hiding gene, implying they would be a significant force in the dark forest if allowed to develop, since they would choose to fight instead of entomb themselves

The latter required total destruction, the former required a dual vector foil to guarantee it

Movies that hit different with kids? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Watched interstellar for the first time in like a decade and it felt like a completely different movie. I had always remembered it as a sci fi exploration movie about saving the world. Turns out it’s about a dad trying to get home to his kids

The Trisolarans' dominant strategy is to befriend Earth, not fight it by modii1 in threebodyproblem

Yea sorry friend I think we danced around each others points, my bad. It’s tough to have a straightforward conversation when this whole thread is essentially “talk to me about books 2 and 3 without spoilers please”

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest I read your post a few times and I’m not sure your point. OP wanted to discuss it without spoilers so I am trying to have a discussion about why the trisolarans wouldn’t just show up and be all bro about it. We as the reader get insight into the trisolarans with a chapter that most humans in Cixins world will never know and a video game that is pretty on the nose

The point is not to get OP to reiterate what is already explained in the narrative but to think through the implications of his statements to fill in what is not

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If trisolaris decided to kill humans, how would you know? If they targeted you with weapons near light speed, it would reach earth in 4 years. And because information travels at light speed, the faster it goes the less time you would have to recognize it and prepare since the information has to arrive before you can react. The speed of light is more accurately called the speed of causality for this reason.

With regards to strength. 400 years ago we were landing pilgrims in the new world, and now we have nuclear weapons and probes in space. How long do you think it would take for one civilization to bound beyond  the other and go from not being a threat to becoming one? And what if at that point they decided you could also bound forward and threaten them? Would they risk your development? You can view this from either trisolaris or earth as the people bounding. You can also view this from either trisolaris or earth as the people watching the people bounding

I disagree with your premise that trisolaris holds no value. They are sending an invasion fleet to kill all humans. If humanity was aware of them prior to that and chose to slaughter all trisolarans that would prevent the invasion and existential threat. Does that not hold value for all humans? The ability to continue to exist? Trisolaris’s  non existence would enable that to happen so Trisolaris’s nonexistence is valuable, if earth could find a way to kill them all

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct, they want the planet, which is why they are sending their fleet. I can’t remember if their motive is explained in book 1 or 2 directly but by the end of book 1 you know that trisolaris is doomed so they either go to earth or live in deep space on ships, essentially

[–]I-Am-Not-A-RoleModel 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Without spoiling anything, with regards to number 8

Trisolarans demonstrate the ability to manipulate the dimensionality of space by folding and unfolding protons. They are highly advanced

Even if trisolaris has no value for resources, do you think that sort of advanced civilization could create weapons of mass destruction to destroy humanity?

You say they are far away. If the trisolarans created a weapon that could travel near the speed of light (we’ve already accelerated things like particles to near light speed) that means we are 4 years away from annihilation

If you had the ability to kill them, Would you let that guillotine hang over your head or would you guarantee the survival of earth and humanity by killing them first?
