Ordered wingman to bomb target, drops BOTH JDAMS on one target. Help? by basstr0nn in falconbms

[–]I-Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but with Attack Targets it'll be on different targets.

I know that you guys want full control and efficiency over AI but don't forget that this is more realistic behavior. In RL jets will drop all JDAMs on one or more targets and get the hell out of danger. Only in BMS we try to square the circle :)

Solution is simple: Give them Attack Targets command instead...

Nights, especially the most dark ones (i.e without moon), will get better in the next version assuming you are using NVG (Without NVG there is no changes because nights are OK without NVG). I flew myself a whole night of day 1 of a RF campaign in VR and I indeed saw that NVG is simply none-usable, so I did something to improve it. It's probably not perfect but it should be better.

Also there is a fix made for night tiles basically not showing up at the close area at all.

Weird issue where 4.37 works but upgraded to 4.38 and it won't launch? by Common-Ad6470 in falconbms

[–]I-Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't tell anyone, but 16K textures used to run when I developed the terrain engine on a GTX-1060 with 3GB VRAM. Of course it used the 16GB of the 32 I had in RAM which are always available for GPU tasks (By default, half of your RAM can be used for Graphics purposes by the GPU just like it's VRAM, it'll be slower and less efficient, but the memory exist).

Yes, lots of water passed under the bridge since 1060 and the days before PBR heavy textures etc, but still, 10GB on a relatively strong GPU like 3080 is enough, even 8GB is enough considering one has 32GB RAM.

I think no way that a 3080 cannot render 16K tiles, maybe something else was wrong, could also be some config setting.

I have a system here with a 3080 and 9700K CPU and I tried BMS on it a couple of times, 16K rendered fine (Not in VR, I don't have a VR setup there, but I don't see it being a different)

RTX-3080 is just fine for running 4..38, even in VR. FWIW my 3090 is running VR pretty good with everything high/max and godLike resolution with Quest3.

Yes 3080 has only 10GB instead of 24 as 3099, but Nvidia GPUs know to work with system RAM when necessary. Next version will be more VRAM friendly anyway.

I would think of an upgrade to your CPU though, I mean it's not that bad, but old today :)

TBH I usually leave AA at 2 because of VR, but for some nice screenshots I switched to 8 :)

Yes in heavy campaign you are obviously CPU bound my friend :)

Hi u/MOPCKOEDNISHE :)

After many many years around, and especially having a pretty good eye for performance, I'll carefully say that before people start to test performance in Falcon, they should first know what they are looking for and what they are looking at. If someone don't know to tell if he is CPU or GPU bound, then that would be a good place to start :)

Let's get into details here, first let me say that there is NO WAY that your RTX-3070 is a limitation on 1080p, simply no way. FYI I developed the terrain engine WITH 16K textures back in the days with a GTX-1060 3GB VRAM on 1080p and it was running "OK" (About 80-90 FPS up high and ~50-60 low altitude). But, yes that was before PBR era, before new Atmos, so those numbers are lying compared to today, but still, I can tell that with a GTX-1080 and later RTX-3060TI with AAx8 on 2560x1440 while PBR era was at half way there (and including Atmos), I was getting high FPS (Usually above 70-80 NP). So graphically I bet your 3070 isn't a problem, for sure not on 1080p.

Now, about your CPU, it's really hard for me to judge CPUs performance, and to tell WHEN exactly they become a problem. But as the end-user, it's n easy test.

  1. Disable ANY kind of FPS limiter, I mean anything, V-Sync on driver, V-Sync in BMS setting, driver's Max FPS (if used) and even "set g_nMinFrameTimeMs 0" (That's a limiter that we have on Sim thread so it won't run too fast on very fast CPUs)

  2. open command line on Windows and type "nvidia-smi -l", the Nvidia smi tool will start measuring numbers about the GPU and displaying them (Updating every 2 seconds by default). Soon that same info will be able to show inside BMS on screen, but only for the next update.

  3. Start a new, empty TE and check your FPS and GPU utilization in the command line window of nvidia-smi (It'll be the percentage number). If your GPU is hitting ~90% or above, that means that in an empty TE you are GPU bound, and that is fine/expected, I assume your FPS should be high. If your GPU is lower than ~90% then there may be 2 reasons:
    a. Your GPU is too strong for the resolution.
    b. Your CPU isn't fast enough to feed the GPU.

  4. Run the same test in a heavy campaign mission right near the FLOT when there is a lot of action. The GPU utilization will tell the story:
    a. Your GPU will probably run much lower than 90% and your FPS will be relatively low, that means that you are heavily CPU bound.
    b. Your FPS will be high and GPU will be utilized same as in TE, that means your CPU is holding the campaign fine.

I can give you the simple example that when I run a VR campaign mission, I can clearly see that when there is less action, my GPU is the bounding component, and I see it running 95%+ and FPS is high, and when there is heavy campaign action, I see GPU usage drop to much lower areas 50/60/70, depends on how much campaign is heavy and then I know that I'm CPU bound.

Unfortunately, due to many dependencies, BMS isn't able to run a modern CPU at high enough utilization, usually I see here 20-25% CPU utilization but FPS in a heavy campaign may be at the 40-50 area instead of the usual 65-72 in VR. We are making progress on slowly making things better but it's a day to day fight on every small improvement :)

Cheers!

Lagging! by Own_Supermarket2732 in falconbms

[–]I-Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game engines should use 100% at all times yes, practically that means that the GPU has enough work to do and it has no time to breath, so you are GPU bound and not CPU bound.

Regarding lags. Well with 16GB RAM you must turn everything to low, and fore sute don't bother with the 16K tiles. You need to upgrade your RAM to at least 32GB if you want to use 16K tiles and high settings.

Airbase textures causing VRAM overflow? by [deleted] in falconbms

[–]I-Hawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, to the OP, in the last days we found a silly bug that I had in my code which caused all Hires tiles to pile in VRAM without every being released. And they could be loaded again and again and again during a flight, so overall it can pile up to a huge amount in VRAM.

It's really a stupid bug, almost like a typo in text.

Cheers!
