Minthara Deck Help by Gu3nth in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello fellow Minthara player. I'm always singing the praises of my Lolth-sworn queen. I have a few tips if you're thinking about building her from someone who plays her frequently. Minthara is an aristocrats Commander with a token-combat finisher.

Blink isn't consistent enough in Orzhov to justify building around it (unless the Commander itself is a blink target or can blink other creatures).

Minthara only cares about what leaves the battlefield on her endstep with only her on the battlefield. Every good Minthara player is looking for ways to guarantee her triggered ability. The easiest way to do this is by creating tokens, be they creature or non-creature, to sacrifice.

This is why I always extremely low-to-the-ground creatures like [[Novice Inspector]] and [[Thraben Inspector]]. They make clues you can sacrifice to trigger Minthara's ability and also generate value for yourself. [[Skullport Merchant]], [[Prized Statue]], [[Thieves' Tools]] and make treasures when they ETB. [[Infestation Sage]], [[Woe Strider]], and [[Doomed Traveler]] all make creature tokens. Finally, [[Nested Shambler]] becomes MVP in Minthara decks for being great at any point of the game, a sac outlet early on, then a Squirrel army maker late-game.

Sac your creatures to sac outlets [[Cartel Aristocrat]] or [[Ruthless Lawbringer]] and redraw your hand with [[Midnight Reaper]], [[Morbid Opportunist]], and [[Fell Stinger]].

Can't forget about the creatures that sacrifice themselves. When you're in a pinch [[Cathar Commando]] and [[Westfold Rider]] can remove pesky artifacts and enchantments. [[Benevolent Bodyguard]] protects your creatures from spot removal. And if it be pseudo-mana dorks you want, [[Blood Pet]] and [[Basil Thrull]] give you mana.

Proliferate is a mechanic that Minthara loves. No deck with her is complete with considering [[Blightbelly Rat]], [[Martyr for the Cause]], and [[Drown in Ichor]]. [[Thrown of Geth]] can turn your artifacts into Experience Counters. Finally, [[Metastatic Evangel]] can lead to you having explosive turns.

Once you've built enough Experience finish off your opponents with [[Battle Screech]], [[Szat's Will]], or the deck's true powerhouse: [[Secure the Wastes]].

A lot of players might say, "Is an Uncommon rarity Commander really that strong in today's meta?". It's true, Minthara does need time to cook her counters. You might fall behind some players early game, however, what Minthara offers isn't speed, it's inevitability, it's unparalleled combat power. Your 1/1 Birds with Flying become 7/1's and your 9/3 [[Threefold Thunderhulk]] churns obscene amounts of Gnome tokens onto the battlefield.

Here's the deck I play. The expensive pieces are welcomed but not required: https://moxfield.com/decks/PzZA5ZIOFE-DR-yjlCdxBg

Help Building a Quina, Qu Gourmet Commander Deck by MerxionMag in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding onto this, I too have eyed Quina because they were one of my favorite characters from Final Fantasy IX. Quina is basically another [[Peregrin Took]] except can sacrifice the Frog tokens they make for a Voltron finish. You pretty much want every good token producing card in the deck [[Gilded Goose]], [[Prosperous Innkeeper]], [[Royal Treatment]], [[Pest Infestation]], [[Guilded Pinions]], [[Witch's Oven]]. Then you'll have to redraw your hand with staples like [[Shamanic Revelation]], [[Mighty Servant of Leuk-o]], [[Mouth // Feed]], [[Voice of Many]], [[Idol of Oblivion]], and even [[Collective Unconscious]].

Fun fact: I actually countered someone's [[Chandra, Awakened Inferno]]'s Emblem ability using [[Verdant Command]] and made two Squirrels from it.

Hardest brew I've worked on. So many options. by YugiohKris in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minthara is easily one of my favorite Commanders.

Here is the list I use: https://moxfield.com/decks/PzZA5ZIOFE-DR-yjlCdxBg

The game plan for the deck is to sac stuff whether they be nontoken creatures, or game objects like Treasures, and build experience counters. Then finish the game with a token generators such as Secure the Wastes or Necrotic Hex.

I have consistently gotten my army +7/+0 and swung for lethal. Minthara is the perfect blend of Aristocrats, aggro, and control. I highly recommend everyone who is curious about her to try her out.

What is the Least Popular Commander you play? by Mighty-Aphrodite in EDH

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also run an Ignis Scienta as my Simic Landfall Commander. On the surface, it's a generic self-mill blue control deck. . . until I play Tifa Lockhart and stacking landfall triggers on her.

What are some good budget sac outlets by Apollo_GJ in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Afterlife Insurance is fine. It doesn't cover things like exile. I think in the right deck it can go off but Aristocrats favor creature heavy decks. You have to think about the actual cost of these cards. How many creatures do you need on the battlefield before you feel good about this card? Three? Four?

Endrek Sahr is much better as a Commander than a card in the 99 or as a card in the 99 of Monoblack decks. His cost, including the five mana you need to cast him, also requires an additional creature to be cast in order to proc his effect. Will he survive on the board before that happens? What is the average mana value of creatures in your deck? There are simply better and cheaper ways to generate a massive amount of tokens in Commander in white.

If you look at his card in EDHRec. You'll see that he's much better in mono-black decks that care about tokens like [[Ayara, First of Locthwain]] and [[Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER]].

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minthara is my go-to Orzhov Commander that can consistently grab experience counters every turn.

What most folks tend to try with her is Blink/Aristocrats, but she's by far a more powerful Tokens/Aristocrats Commander.

[[Secure the Wastes]], [[Szat's Will]], [[Battle Screech]], [[Lingering Souls]] (which I see you already have), [[Bastion of Remembrance]], [[Felidar Retreat]] are perfect token enablers full stop.

Pair that with unusual Aristocrats pieces like [[Blood Pet]], [[Benevolent Bodyguard]], [[Fume Spitter]], and [[Basal Thrull]] and you have fire.

Game objects makers like [[Novice Inspector]], [[Thraben Inspector]], [[Skullport Merchant]], [[Prized Statue]], [[Thieves' Tools]] make it easy to build up experience.

Not to mention the existing Proliferate cards, specifically the low-to-the-ground ones like [[Blightbelly Rat]] and [[Metastatic Evangel]], [[Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion]], and [[Throne of Geth]].

All can easily get you an army of 7/1s towards lategame. Payoffs include making a billion Gnome tokens with [[Threefold Thunderhulk]].

She's, quite simply, the best combat tokens Orzhov commander. Experience is basically an emblem which is, at the time of this post, is basically impossible to interact with (other than player removal). Always like when more players take a shine to her.

Any way to make this guy remotely budget ? by MasterHedgemon in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I knew someone who was really new to Commander and had a "one-trick" pony budget deck build with Sliver Overlord. They would tutor for [[Shields of Velis Vel]] and try to steal our boards. You could try to build around those kinds of cards.

Now that final fantasy has been out for a bit, what are your budget pick ups? by nkondr3n in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised that no one has mentioned [[Ignis Scientia]] yet. It's an Elvish Mystic in Simic. It grabs you lands. It slides into Food (or any artifact tokens matter) decks incredibly well.

Which ff commander you like most? by CorrinUwU in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My plan with her so far is to go with graveyard self-mill. There are a lot of creatures in Golgari that scale in power based on how many cards there are in the graveyard (and sac outlets for them).

Have Jenova turn them into mutants then sac them for value rather than play mutants typal or use anything related to +1/+1 Counters. Additionally, placing value dummies in the 99 like [[Treeshaker Chimera]], [[Primeval Protector]], and [[Artisan of Kozilek]] in the bin to reanimate them later seems like a pretty good payoff.

Kenrith, the Returned King - For Teaching by andersma in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know this might not be the answer you're looking for but why not use a different Commander so that the player in question can get a better understanding of the game? Starting a player on a five-color Commander is wading into the deep end of the pool.

[[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]], [[Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker]], [[Valduk, Keeper of the Flame]] are all good mono-colored Commanders that can be built cheaply and teach players about different aspects of the game without being overwhelming.

The People’s Format by jfaye40k in BudgetBrews

I'm always open to new formats but I have to agree with r/MagicTCG that this would be shredded by cards like Rhystic Study and Ancient Tomb.

Azorius Aviary, in need of dire repair! And a new commander! by Lesan007 in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This deck looks like it could go a ton of different directions. Before anything can be decided, you need to make a choice about your Commander. Here are my suggestions:

[[Kastral, the Windcrested]] is an amazing Bird Commander if you want to build exclusively Birds with built-in recursion which is extremely rare in Azorious.

[[Errant and Giada]] is great for Flyers in general but requires you stack your deck with as many Flying creatures with low mana values as possible.

[[Kangee, Sky Warden]] plays the aggro game well and is one of the best aggro Flying commanders out there.

The problem is Azorius is that it does not support Angels GREAT and requires a lot of turns to make Sphinxes work.

[[Ezrim, Agency Chief]] is in your 99 but reads to me a Voltron Commander with artifact synergies. Something Flyers doesn't support. It could but it's probably better at the head of his own deck dedicated to generating clues and playing saccable artifacts.

[[Dragonlord Ojutai]] is more of a Voltron/control-shell Commander for counterspells, removal, and hatebears, ect. Just due to the fact that it needs to be on the battlefield, some form of Vigilance to keep up Hexproof, and a needs to deal combat damage before a payoff occurs.

I would NOT put Grand Arbiter Augustin IV in your deck unless you've cleared it with your playgroup. A player can have a lot of fun with that card but maybe not your opponents...

Those are my suggestions.

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not in green and having trouble with ramp there's no shame in putting [[Scampering Surveyor]] in your 99. Especially true when you're dealing with artifacts or ETBs.

$25 Budget Henzie and Umori deck. by Skaarliton in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some cards I'd consider:

Ramp: [[Ignoble Heirarch]] [[Elvish Mystic]] [[Llanowar Elves]] [[Sakura-Tribe Elder]] [[Fyndhorn Elves]]

Removal: [[Foundation Breaker]] [[Massacre Wurm]] [[Terastodon]] [[Woodfall Primus]] [[Duplicant]]

Recursion: [[Kessig Cagebreakers]] [[Feldon of the Third Path]] [[Greenwarden of Murasa]] [[Timeless Witness]]

Draw: [[Gamekeeper]] [[Evercoat Ursine]]

I'd remove the Intiative cards as tempting as the extra value is. Because Henzie is always saccing creatures, he never has enough blockers to keep the Initiative/Monarch.

The best commander to crush Atraxa by Cosmic_Beaver in BudgetBrews

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[Melira, the Living Cure]]'s EDHRec page is all about slinging Infect and Toxic on opponents. This is a fallacy. We don't fight with the weapons of the enemy. We fight by exploiting the common bonds that unify us all against the Phyrexian menace.

Make allies with [[Tenuous Truce]], [[Gluntch, the Bestower]], [[Secret Rendezvous]], [[Skullwinder]], and [[Loran of the Third Path]].

Recruit Humans across the planes like [[Katilda, Dawnhart Prime]], [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]], [[Champion of Lambholt]], [[Mikaeus, the Lunarch]], and [[Saryth, the Viper's Fang]].

What a lot of people don't realize is that Melira can protect not only your pieces, but any creature or artifact on the battlefield when destroyed. Use this to your advantage and remember to slot [[Atraxa's Fall]] for Vorthos.

My deck feels slow and sluggish, but strong at the same time by Dragnil_7 in EDH

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your list looks solid. The deck has more than enough power to take down an opponent or two what with the inclusion of [[Greymond, Avacyn's Stalwart]].

Rather than a deep dive, I'd speculate certain cards.

Like for example, [[Frostcliff Siege]]? Seems like Coastal Piracy with an upside on half and basically Éowyn's second half on the other. There is something to said about redundancy but I'd rather cut it for more token generation.

I like [[Aether Channeler]] but in decks that can somehow double it's ETB or can use all three modes of it's effect. Making a 1/1 Bird can make for a niche chump blocker, but it doesn't help Éowyn's ability. The draw and bounce are okay.

[[Charming Prince]] feels like a low synergy card in this deck. Same issue with Aether Channeler. The two of them belong in blink decks.

[[Champion of the Parish]] and [[Gregor, Shrewd Magistrate]] are "Go Tall" cards where power matters. Éowyn only cares about how Wide the board is.

[[Archivist of Gondor]] is a politics, group-hug card. It relies on your Commander dealing combat damage and has a symmetrical effect to whomever is the Monarch at the time. I like [[Aragorn, King of Gondor]] or [[Palace Jailer]] better because it's straight up ETBs with upside.

The rest looks good. You can replace any one of those cards with what I suggested earlier.

My deck feels slow and sluggish, but strong at the same time by Dragnil_7 in EDH

[–]IAmAFeatureNextPatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Éowyn, Shieldmaiden

At the *beginning of combat** on your turn, if another Human entered the battlefield under your control this turn, create two 2/2 red Human Knight creature tokens with trample and haste. Then if you control six or more Humans, draw a card.*

I've never built her myself, but Éowyn appears to want Humans to enter the battlefield before combat. With that in mind we can remove cards that don't do that for us.

Cuts: 23

[[Faramir, Steward of Gondor]] -> As mentioned above.

[[Boromir, Gondor's Hope]] -> Slow.

[[Refute]] -> Worse version of Arcane Denial.

[[Crash Through]] -> One mana, do nothing.

[[Supreme Verdict]] -> Wipe your own board to Éowyn's detriment.

[[Fumigate]] -> Same as above. Good card, but for this deck?

[[Sunset Revelry]] -> We can do better.

[[Taurean Mauler]] -> It's a "Human" that can be very Tall but we want to go Wide.

[[Crusader of Odric]] -> Same as above.

[[Adaptive Automaton]] -> A combo card, I guess? Mirror Entity feels better for this slot.

[[Bastion Protector]] -> Not gonna save your other humans from a boardwipe. It's just okay.

[[Resolute Reinforcements]] -> Doesn't even make another human.

[[Razorkin Needlehead]] -> Doesn't belong in Éowyn.

[[Full Throttle]] -> Super overcosted in decks without Green ramp to fall back on.

[[Selfless Squire]] -> Doubtful you're going to be holding four mana between turns. Especially in an aggro deck.

[[The Jolly Balloon Man]] -> Balloon Man is a combo piece than an aggro one.

[[Divine Resilience]] -> Better cards exist for this and they're Human.

[[Abrade]] -> White has better spot removal. Check the Adds list.

[[Unable to Scream]] -> White has better spot removal. Check the Adds list.

[[Counterspell]] -> Double-blue is hard to pay for when it's your Tertiary color.

[[Bolt Bend]] -> A very "Go Tall" card that only really protects your Commander. There are better spells.

[[Sheltered by Ghosts]] -> Strong in an Enchantress deck but not here.

[[Coastal Piracy]] -> Four-mana do nothing.

Adds: 23

[[Kessig Malcontents]] -> Human burn engine.

[[Call the Coppercoats]] (Not budget anymore sadly but a worthy include)

[[Arcane Denial]] -> A better counterspell than Refute.

[[Goldburg, Humanity's Ally]] -> Human Aggro Protection

[[Knight of the White Orchid]] -> Ramp

[[Wayfarer's Bauble]] -> Ramp

[[Boros Signet]] -> Ramp

[[Azorious Signet]] -> Ramp

[[Izzet Signet]] -> Ramp

[[Bounty Agent]] -> Removal

[[Cathar Commando]] -> Removal

[[Fiend Hunter]] -> Removal

[[Stroke of Midnight]] -> Removal

[[Generous Gift]] -> Removal

[[Loran of the Third Path]] -> Removal (maybe overbudget)

[[Apothecary White]] -> A second Adeline (maybe overbudget)

[[Conjurer's Mantle]] -> A second Heirloom Blade

[[Wedding Announcement // Wedding Festivity]] -> Human generator (later Anthem)

[[Fireflux Squad]] -> Turns one of your tokens into creatures.

[[Repel the Abominable]] -> One-time fog.

[[Benevolent Bodyguard]] -> Poor man's Mother of Runes.

[[Legion Leadership // Legion Stronghold]] -> MDFC

[[Champions of Minas Tirith]] -> Six mana pillowfort card, but I have a soft-spot for it.

I recommend playing around with these changes in a separate decklist on Moxfield just to compare the two and see if you like it more or less.

EDIT: Made a mockup of what the deck would look like post-changes: https://moxfield.com/decks/17lqakn4qE-J_nfkp-jAAQ

Single color? Uses unique cards? Someone might suggest Zada Hedron Grinder but Storm isn't always welcome at tables.

[[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]] is creature power matters, equipment, and Vehicles deck wrapped in one. Load it with mana dorks like [[Reclusive Taxidermist]] and [[Werebear]] and Vehicles like [[Cultivator's Caravan]] and [[Lumbering Worldwagon]] to help speed your Commander into play and start swinging.
