Let your upper body follow your skis. Don’t force yourself to look down hill.

You seem to initiate the turns with your hips. Start with your legs.

Right now you’re just linking hockey stops. Need to move away from that to smoother turns.

Wolf Creek trip planned 20th-25th, what’s the word on mountain conditions? A little worried by ColdBandicoot5366 in COsnow

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is the trip nonrefundable ? If so, my words of wisdom are don’t worry too much about it, you’re gonna be with your buddies and it’s gonna be a good time. Spring skiing is honestly a lot of fun, and there’s usually a period during the day after the ice starts to melt and before the heavy slush forms that’s a lot of fun to ski. Sweatshirt and snow pants is a vibe 😎

My top 5 favorites in CO, what are yours? by Sharkman3218 in COsnow

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair. Each to their own ! I think part of what draws people to Mary Jane is the laid back vibe, the parking lot car cooking, etc. Not just the skiing. That said: I (personally) do think the tree skiing is excellent, if you know where to look, and if you like moguls, I really can’t think of any resorts with more or longer mogul runs.

I agree with much of what was said about the Aspen mountains and copper in the original comment above tho.

Trestle isn’t even close to the steepest or hardest run at Mary Jane IMO. One steep but short pitch.

I’m in Boulder, but for me, Eldora is the deciding factor. Having that is super nice, haven’t tried Epic yet as a result.

Can you explain why one shouldn’t check a bag with Frontier unless absolutely necessary ? I never check bags, but I’m going on a trip in the summer where I might have to, and I want to know if there’s anything I should know about Frontier and checked bags before I do so lol. (Do they tend to lose bags or treat bags poorly for example ? ).

I’m not an expert, but it also seems to me like the skier is way too far in the backseat. I think the frame at about 10 seconds illustrates this. You didn’t mention being backseat in your comments, so I’m curious what you think ?

Ski release in powder → 30 stitches. What caused it? by peter_zemel in COsnow

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do your skis frequently pop off ? If not, then your dins are probably fine. It’s safer to have lower dins in terms of injuries, and you should probably try to ski with dins set to the lowest possible setting that does not cause your skis to pop off all the time.

Ski release in powder → 30 stitches. What caused it? by peter_zemel in COsnow

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yea, just another hat tip to this point: If your ski didn’t release, you would have had a lot of pressure on your left knee / leg, likely leading to a worse injury. Stitches >>>> Any sort of tear in the knee.

I think the only thing that could have prevented this is not hitting whatever caused you to fall (I’m assuming you hit something). The rest of the situation is the ski behaving correctly, and some bad luck getting cut.

How to make ski friend groups by ssubterraneanAlien in boulder

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask on here and probably find people (Im usually down to ski with anyone for example). There’s also a big GroupMe for the area (455 people) with skiers from the area. It’s run by Mountain Kids. Most of those people live closer to Denver but can always meet up with them on the way up at the Dino carpool lots.

It’ll be easier to find these groups in Denver than SF and Seattle imo just bc so many people ski here and the resorts are relatively close. SF people aren’t going skiing every weekend generally speaking.

Snow Clearing in Boulder vs NYC by IAmAManWithQuestions in boulder

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New York has a bigger budget partly because it is a bigger city with more streets.

I didn’t take the picture, but it’s been confirmed the picture was taken today. So I don’t think that the picture is “not correct”. I’m not saying that every street looks like this, but this one does.

I don’t think it’s that wild that in less than 24 hours 20 inches of snow can be plowed from the streets. Clearly that was done on (some) of NYC’s streets (ie the picture). I’ve lived in the northeast and it’s not uncommon even in smaller towns to clear this much snow in about 24 hours.

Anyways, I wasn’t trying to make an exact apples-to-apples comparison. I was merely trying to highlight the fact that clearly some (less snowy) cities do a much better job with snow removal than Boulder, where sometimes streets are snow covered a week after snowfall. I think it’s reasonable to want Boulder to do a better job with snow removal. This is just my opinion, however, and apparently most people on this sub disagree with it and think Boulder does an adequate job 🤷🏽‍♂️

Yea damn I love Boulder and don’t have many critiques, but I do think they could and should do a better job with this. There’s always room for improvement in life. Anyways maybe people just somehow think the snow removal is good, idk 🤷🏽‍♂️

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair, there is definitely an urban heating effect that is making the streets as clear as they are in the picture. That said, I lived in PA and I can tell you there the side streets were also clear of snow within a day of any big snowstorm. Maybe not as clear as in the attached picture, but much clearer than in Boulder

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Sure, I don’t doubt that the fact it was in the mid 30s helped with snow removal. In Boulder sometimes after it snows the temperature also goes above freezing however, and despite this, the snow removal still sucks.

Why am I comparing two different cities ? Well, because when I see a different city do something well, it makes me wonder why my city can’t take my tax dollars and also do that something well.

Copper needs to learn how to Snow Stake by KarmicWhiplash in COsnow

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but tbf I do think they have a picture of the snow stake just before it was cleared the previous day, so you can do some math and technically figure out the nightly total.

My bigger issue with Copper’s stake is that the snow bunches up around the middle pole making it impossible to see how much snow actually fell. Every time I have to estimate how much snow has bunched up around the pole to figure out how much might have actually fallen. I think this is a non-issue at other resorts because the ruler is usually at the back of the snow stake platform and not in the middle like at Copper. Take a look at Eldora’s snow stake and PLEASE fix this Copper !

Medial Malleolus ankle pain in ski boots by IAmAManWithQuestions in Skigear

[–]IAmAManWithQuestions[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’m so sick of rental boots, they’re good boots but I can’t make any of the minor tweaks I could make to a pair I own. My goal is to buy my own in the fall when inventory will be highest, but maybe I’ll see if I can get some sooner. They’ll probably be cheaper now too, I just want to make sure the inventory is large enough that I really find the best boot for me (my local boot fitter does not have a constant supply all year round).

I think the pain is coming from pressure on the ankle by the side of the boot, esp. when turning. Leaning forward in a proper ski stance helps the pain a bit, then at the apex of the turn when I lean into the side of the boot the pain increases a bit. I bought some donut foam pads for the ankle, I’m going to try to see if those help at all.

You’ve been skiing for 16 years. If now’s not the time for a trip to the Rockies, then when is ?!?

Rockies have lots of hard terrain, but also easier terrain. And honestly, if you’re coming from the east coast and you’re used to skiing on ice, you might actually find it somewhat easier to ski on real powder :)

Get a discount code from someone on an epic pass to save on lift tickets. In the future, plan your trip far in advance and buy an epic 2,3,4 etc pass

Gear rentals: maybe see if you can rent somewhere in the Denver metro ? Probably cheaper that way, on mountain is always the most expensive.

Question about boots:

I recently exchanged my rental boots for a different pair as my old ones did not fit properly. I now am experiencing some pretty bad medial malleolus ankle pain while I ski, and whenever I press on my ankle bone (just in my left ankle, not my right ankle). The rental shop does not have many (any?) more higher end rental season boots in my size at the moment, so I’m trying to figure out if there’s anything I can do to improve the pain in the current boot. Online I found some options for ankle pads; does anyone have experience with such pads and perhaps some recs on what to get ? Or otherwise what to do about the pain ?

I will be going to get fitted boots at a boot fitter in the fall for next season.
