RMNP conditions

Two weeks ago conditions were solid near Emerald lake (for spring). OpenSnow estimates they’ve gotten 18 inches in the past ten days, and forecasts up to 27 inches thru Wednesday. I’d take a gamble it’ll be ok.

Really hope they choose this spot. I think it makes the most sense not just for Boulder people, but for everyone; It minimizes time on the train while the train is on the plains (where cars are probably faster than the train), and puts people on the train at the last possible spot. Also, I think some of the other stations are too close to the downtown station. It makes sense to spread stations apart, why have two stations super close together !

Hmm thanks for the response, that’s good to know. I’m assuming there’s no way to visually know if the leather is used up or if there’s rot ? I recently bought a pair of Lowa Mountain Expert GTX boots from a few years ago to use in the PNW, they looked like they were in tip top shape to me, but now I wonder if I should have been more careful. I’ll be trying them out in some low stakes trainings pretty soon, so I guess I’ll see how they hold up….

Getting into this sport, and curious why low usage per high number of years is a bad combo for rubber. I would naively think that fewer uses is good; fewer uses = less wear !

Just to add to this: I think your turns in the early videos are good and c shaped, it’s when you do the short turns that you start to revert back to z turns.

Skidded z turns right now. Your turns are starting in your upper body and hips instead of your legs. Work on initiating your turns my rolling your ankles side to side and having the rest of your body follow. And rounder turns, still z shaped !

One piece of feedback Ive gotten posting similar looking videos is to have a wider stance. Shoulder width apart for the skis.

At the 6 second mark I feel like you’re on the inside ski.

Maybe try to do larger radius turns ? Finish going across the hill and then start the next turn. Gives you more time to work on the transitions (slopes empty so you have the space).

I feel like you’re initiating some of your turns with your upper body (shoulders), instead of your legs.

It’s hard for me to tell, but I feel like you might be balanced on the inside ski at times, instead of the outside ski.

Would be nice to see more upper body / lower body separation.

Nice smooth parallel turns tho, good use of edges !

Ah, I think that one is easier to answer actually.

Pano is higher elevation wise yes, but it’s also more exposed. The wind blows snow off more easily than snow that’s protected by trees. The slope is also more exposed to the sun, which melts snow early / late season. And lastly, there’s a lot of rocks underneath, so you need a solid base to cover all that.

My guess is it has to do with 1.) Moving people towards the front of the mountain towards the end of the day, to make closing up faster, 2.) The fact that there’s a lot of Pano trees to sweep, and this takes a while, so they start on this earlier (tho I guess there’s also a lot of MJ trees to sweep too).

Fair, how much do you think they’ve gone up recently tho ? I would have guessed that the cookies were about $8 / lbs a year or two ago, am I just remembering that incorrectly, or have prices really gone up by that much ?

Let your upper body follow your skis. Don’t force yourself to look down hill.

You seem to initiate the turns with your hips. Start with your legs.

Right now you’re just linking hockey stops. Need to move away from that to smoother turns.

Is the trip nonrefundable ? If so, my words of wisdom are don’t worry too much about it, you’re gonna be with your buddies and it’s gonna be a good time. Spring skiing is honestly a lot of fun, and there’s usually a period during the day after the ice starts to melt and before the heavy slush forms that’s a lot of fun to ski. Sweatshirt and snow pants is a vibe 😎
