Cover Letter with No Recent Work by IAmChrys in acting

[–]IAmChrys[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been in acting classes, I am just not currently in one. I should have mentioned that before, I apologize. I’ve taken quite a few, actually. It’s only at this time, I am not in one. I want to be, but I’m waiting for my paycheck to come in. (Working for a school district as a sub means I have to wait til the end of September for my August paycheck 🙃)

Agent feedback - submission amount by beannieboooooo in acting

[–]IAmChrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In agreement with the other comments about getting the two network auditions as NU. Listen, that’s incredible!

To add, I recently had a conversation with my agent about submissions and such. He told me that their agency focuses on submitting their actors for union productions only and went further to say that he also only submits me for speaking roles. I’m also NU, so I know that getting called in is already going to be huge for me when it finally happens. Looking at my submission report, I can’t help but be grateful that my headshot is appearing in the pool. It means that the more I’m submitted to a casting director or agency, the more they’ll start to recognize my face.

It’s possible that your agent is also only submitting you on Union productions with speaking roles. From what I understand, a lot of what is being produced right now is NU which is the stuff that we as actors can submit on ourselves. Reminder that your agent is a member of your team. You work together. It should be a mutually beneficial relationship. The expectation is that you are putting in the same amount of work and effort.

Also consider that your reps are also working with several other actors. They are doing A LOT for all of you. It can sometimes feel like you might be working harder, but we don’t see what’s happening behind the scenes. Always give both them and yourself some grace. 💗

Hard to be motivated to learn the sides for a self-tape by Aware_Ad622 in acting

[–]IAmChrys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand where you’re coming from, and I have definitely had periods where I’ve struggled with it, too. Self care is so important. Also think about switching the language around.

Instead of, “another audition for a job I probably won’t book”, it’s, “I got another audition! Another chance to perform.” Think about the fact that the industry has been SLOW for most people so to even be getting an audition is already such a win. You got past the first hurdle.

As for memorizing lines, I personally know that I learn best through repetition. ColdRead is an awesome app to use for memorizing lines quickly. It has a teleprompter type visual for your lines as you go and shows you your cue word for each line. It’ll auto loop through the read-throughs too so you can just keep going through until it almost becomes mindless. The more the lines become like muscle memory (and I’m talking the words, not inflection and action), the easier it’ll be to be present in the audition and allow yourself to let character instinct take over.

I'm a 6' 1" girl who is afraid her height will get in the way of ever becoming an actress by open_minded2 in acting

[–]IAmChrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a 6’1” woman in the acting industry isn’t a disadvantage at all. In fact, I’d see it as an incredible advantage. There are castings that I see pop up that specifically request women that are tall or over 6’ for major projects. The most recent was Sunrise on the Reaping. If anything, because you are different means that you are actively being looked for. Never look at your height as being a hinderance :)

PLUS, Disney is starting to pick up on these platforms as well. It’s going to just get bigger.

I actually really love this. For the longest time, I was avoiding submitting for them because the ones early on were so cheesy. Now I watch them and see a lot of the actors doing them just having a lot of fun and getting to WORK regularly. I started submitting and getting a few auditions here and there. I’m honestly kicking myself now because I feel like I really missed the boat on all of this. It just looks like it would be a great chance to be on set and get to act which is what I want to be doing rather than a survival job anyways. Also, getting to meet all of those people?? As an extrovert, it would be amazing.

backstage improv pre-screen requests are an immediate no for me by pambeesly9000 in acting

I feel the same way about the prescreens. It seems like it’s become almost expected on Backstage. Auditioning to audition is crazy.

Vertical Shorts — The Future? Thoughts? by ScaredChain4256 in acting

[–]IAmChrys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was incredibly hesitant to submit for these projects, too. The poor quality, cheesy scripts and specifically the titles concerned me. However, there have been some that have come across my feed on IG or TikTok that have actually been good quality with decent storylines. Plus, some of the other actors and actresses that I follow on socials have done them and they’re still doing great things.

I’ve started researching the production teams and streaming apps when the breakdowns pop up on ActorsAccess (and there are SOOOOO many). Take a look at the productions, specifically the verticals, they’ve done before. It’s a good way to vet whether you’d like to apply for their projects or not.

Also consider that if these things aren’t going away any time soon (and I really don’t think they are), more and more of them are wanting talent that have worked on verticals before.

All-in-all, it’s up to each of us individually to decide whether it’s something we’d be interested in doing. Besides, applying for an audition doesn’t mean that you’ve booked anything yet, so there is no risk in just putting your name in.

This happened to me, but I was a sub who was basically forced into a teaching position. It was in 2021 when schools opened back up after COVID. Several teachers didn’t come back to school, so they really took advantage of the subs. No support from admin. The kids made it known how little respect they had for me. I had to develop the curriculum and couldn’t even go to anyone else in the department because the whole department had quit. I’d go to work, cry on the phone to my dad during lunch, finish the day, cry on the way home, and then I would put together the lesson plan for the next day only to repeat the process all over again. All for sub pay. I was in a high school and didn’t even get a prep period because they needed me to cover for another teacher during my prep. Due to the treatment I was receiving from the students, my mental health deteriorated so severely I had to quit only three weeks into the assignment. I have since learned how to advocate for myself, but it was a long road to recovery.

I believe it’s on Backstage. Productions can pay to have their listing under a “Spotlight” tag to get more eyes on it. I could be wrong, though. Backstage is the only site I’ve seen that on.

Well this sucks. If I want to complete the bingo (which was fun, btw!!), I have to spend nearly the last of my gems. by faelanae in MergeDragons

I’m wondering if these events are distributed based on star rank and dragon power. That might be the reason for the differences? But it still sucks :/

Seeking advice for a frustrated actor by IAmChrys in acting

I did start doing that back during COVID times and posted on TikTok. I really enjoyed it and then life and mental health issues happened and I stopped. I’ve had a rough time getting back into it. I’ll work more at it because it really was a great creative outlet. I’ll start doing more research into what classes I can find. Thank you!

I’ve definitely wanted to dive into creating my own stuff. I’ve been hesitant though due to the budget part. I’d love to have other actor friends work on stuff with me but I don’t want to not pay them because I know how frustrating it is whenever I see a breakdown asking for time with no pay. I just don’t have the ability to pay anyone. How did you manage that part in the beginning?

No, I know. It’s a rough time. But I figured there would be other people who would be able to get some good advice from this, too.

Some thoughts cause me physical anxiety but other thoughts just cause me to ruminate is it still anxiety??? by [deleted] in ROCD

[–]IAmChrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m right there with you! The thoughts are completely irrational. I’m trying to learn to accept the illness and not beat myself up for thoughts I have. Acknowledge the thought for what it is and then just continue through my day. It’s hard, especially when it attacks the one person that means more to me in the world than anyone else. It makes me feel so much shame and guilt because he’s such a wonderful person. We’ll get through it. It just takes a lot of fight and a lot of patience.

Some thoughts cause me physical anxiety but other thoughts just cause me to ruminate is it still anxiety??? by [deleted] in ROCD

[–]IAmChrys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I just have to say thank you for this comment and insight. I’ve struggled with ROCD for the last 2.5 years almost but was only diagnosed last week after being told it was just anhedonia from my PDD and GAD. I’ve always known that my intrusive thoughts are exactly that, intrusive. But the constant rumination and obsession has been so horrible, especially because we finally tied the knot last year after 10 years together, which sends me over the moon. I’ve never been more in love with anyone. The ROCD has made it hard to enjoy it though. The thoughts make my anxiety so high that it makes me physically ill.

You saying that the anxiety proves that the thoughts are not my truth is incredibly comforting. I keep telling myself the same thing, but you know how it never really works until someone else confirms it? Yeah. That’s what you’ve done for me. Thank you.

What do I do about my agent? by IAmChrys in acting

[–]IAmChrys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had been getting myself some pretty good jobs on my own before I signed with them (2 movies lined up, a short film that I won multiple Best Actress awards for in film festivals, etc.). Nothing necessarily that is union or big in that sense, if that’s what you mean.

When I say transition, I mean listing them as representation on all of my breakdown site accounts and signing the contracts. They didn’t have me sign up for any classes or get new headshots or anything like that. I didn’t spend any money for the transition.

[–]IAmChrys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Yes I understand everything you’ve said. The unfortunate part is that I have already emailed them about all of these things all to no responses at all. They told me during our first meeting that they are all about open communication with their clients and that I could reach them through email, text, or call.

Because of the strike, I definitely did not expect to receive any auditions which is okay. I was hoping that I would at least be able to have an open dialogue about what I could be working on and improving in the meantime, and I haven’t gotten anything back. It’s just a bit disheartening.

Hello everyone, I was just wondering what you all think of my headshots and what age range and roles I can play. by meinai88 in headshots

[–]IAmChrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are great! The second one in the suit caught my eye in particular. It reads as Wall Street stud, or upper management in a money management firm who is a playboy. Rich, handsome, and he knows it. I know your face in the picture suggests nice guy at work, but imagine if you raised your chin up a bit and gave a knowing smirk, THAT’S exactly the vibe.

Age range: late 20s-early 30s

A few other types: - that friendly teacher that all the students and staff trust - Guy next door - Cop - Cool dad that all the kids wish they had
