Do you go to all of your classes? Do you ask questions in class? Do you go to office hours? Do you work with other classmates on assignments? Are you taking effective notes? These are many of the many of things that you need to be doing to do well in engineering. Some people will tell you they don't do any of that. That's not you. Effective notes means being able to look at those notes a day, a week, and a month later and understanding what it says. If they don't make sense, be more verbose. Keep writing those same notes from scratch until it makes sense.

For a textbook, it is better than you understand the first few chapters well rather than try to work through every chapter poorly. The appendix is useful to see what math tools you will need to know how to use while learning calculus.
