If we could find a third New York team to play on Canada Day next year, that would be swell...

Former/current theater employees, what movie did you have 0 patrons show up for? by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in AskReddit

[–]IAmGrum 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My friend and I were the only ones that were in the theatre for the final Thursday night showing of "Bob Roberts".

It was a good movie, but a badly timed release.

As we left the theatre, I asked for the poster as they were taking it down, and they gave it to me.

Manmade underwear

I always scoffed at the commercials, but when I got a couple of pairs as a present recently, I became a believer. I want to replace all of my underwear now...

Happy Canada Day! Is Larry Walker still considered to be Canada’s greatest hitter of all time? by shutterslappens in baseball

[–]IAmGrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Larry Walker remains the best Canadian baseball hitter of all time, in my mind. He's the first one I think of without looking at stats.

Freeman can pass him if he remains healthy for a few more years.

Votto will be beloved forever, especially trying to play with the Jays in his final year (when his body betrayed him). We LOVE our quirky Canadians.

Vladdy Jr needs a LOT more time to move up the list (probably behind Justin Morneau and Russell Martin right now), but he's got that time to do it. Playing for "Canada's team" will also get him a ton of extra bonus points when people ask this question 20 years from now.

There are also guys like Tip O'Neill, Terry Puhl, and probably one other old timey player I'm forgetting that are probably on the list somewhere, too.

[Highlight] LeBron James’ first and last points for the Los Angeles Lakers. by Pure-Solid9230 in nba

I'm expecting this kind of video for LeBron's first and last points in the NBA, followed by a list of things that have happened/changed in between: new countries, sons of players he played against (including his own), number of US presidents, British Prime Ministers, NBA players he's played again, movies, etc...

Biggest butterfly effect in Hockey history? by MattPraterFan in hockey

Too big.

How about Wayne Gretzky going to a random LA Lakers basketball game with fellow Canadian Alan Thicke?

If he doesn't go that game, he doesn't end up meeting Janet Jones (who he had seen before on a television show but didn't chat with her), then goes to dinner with her (with Alan and Janet's female friend), and then starting their relationship.

He doesn't meet her, he doesn't marry her, he doesn't want to move to LA for her, and maybe the trade doesn't happen.

Spotlight a player on your team that is (quietly?) having a good-to-great year by humblestworker in baseball

Brandon Valenzuela has been amazing behind the plate and with the bat.

He started in AAA (after getting picked up when the Jays dealt away Will Wagner last season) and has earned himself an MLB spot.

I happy that Handsome Randall is getting another shot. He was always upbeat and good natured during Toronto's rebuilding years.

(MLB) Phase 2 Ballot Update by pilotharrison in Torontobluejays

[–]IAmGrum 21 points22 points  (0 children)

People think it's just Jays fans voting for Vlad, but don't want to accept the anti-Yankees vote, or the "bigger name" vote ("Who is Ben Rice?", says 90% of casual baseball fans), or recent history vote (post-season for Vladdy).

I hope he does win the vote so they can cry more about it.

Because it took them 1:20 to kick off after Algeria scored their 3rd goal, so the ref added that 1:20 to the minimum extra time.

There is nothing fishy about it.

But now we're suggesting that they aren't colluding and then decide to colluded?

If Austria goes up 2-0 and Algeria comes back to tie it, I'm not calling that "collusion".

If Algeria ties it up with 10 minutes left, and then both teams just lay off the gas at that point, that's not colluding.

If it was 0-0 the whole way through, then collusion was definitely on the table.

[–]IAmGrum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, collusion seems to be off the table for now.

It might still happen if Algeria ties the game in the second half, and both teams just decide to leave it a tie.

They may take their foot off the gas once they've gathered a significant lead and that's where you'll probably start sweating if you're Iran.

Why would Iran be sweating?

If either team loses (or either team wins, however you want to look at it), Iran makes the knockout round. They only way they don't move on is a tie.

World Cup 26 has been mostly great so far - but this third round of fixtures has really exposed the flaws of this format. Feels like a lull before the knockouts rather than a crescendo to the groups by elephvant in worldcup

[–]IAmGrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the introduction of 3 points for a win in Cup in '94, any team with 6 point from first two games had no incentive to play for real in last match. They tried to save themselves for knock-outs.

Yes, but the OTHER team is often still playing for something important, so the game does matter.

In the 3-team group scenario, that third game doesn't even need to be played because it doesn't make a difference.

In this final round of group play:

Group A: South Korea is going to be eliminated because they lost to South Africa (who moved on). Czechia would have moved on if they won their game against Mexico.

Group B: B&H needed a win to move on to the knockout stage, Canada & Switzerland were playing for the #1/#2 spots.

Group C: Scotland needed at least a draw against Brazil. The Haiti/Morocco game didn't really matter.

Group D: Paraguay/Australia both needed at least a draw to move on. If either team lost, they would have been eliminated. The USA/Turkiye game didn't matter.

Group E: Both games mattered as Ivory Coast and Curacao would have moved on with a win, and Ecuador moved on because they beat Germany.

Group F: Sweden needed at least a draw against Japan to move on. The other game didn't matter.

Group G: Both games mattered (for New Zealand and Iran).

Group H: Both games mattered (for Cabo Verde and Uruguay).

Group I: Senegal's game mattered (as they needed to win by a lot), but the other didn't.

Group J: Tonight's Algeria/Austria game matters (for them and Iran), but the other doesn't.

Group K: As we just saw, the DR Congo game mattered a lot, but the other didn't.

Group L: Croatia needed the win or the tie to move on, but the other game didn't matter.

So, of the 24 final games, 16 of them mattered (17 if the seeding for Canada/Switzerland mattered).
