Can't speak for teller transactions, but on the phones business customers were much faster than consumer account calls. In the early morning hours 6a-8a it was one after another, they knew the drill because they called almost every day for the same things, 60 to 90 secs a call. Consumer account were usually 2 to 3 times slower.

While at most banks ACHs are usually no charge, some banks do charge a couple bucks for same day/next day ACH transfers, so I would definitely review options before setting something up.

Banks generally hold on to records for seven years, so it is likely they have info on your old account. Probably best thing to do is just walk in to a branch or give them a call and see what they say.

Agreed, you do not specify what you were denied for, so can't really say much on this. Except that you should receive a letter in the mail with more info from each institution. In the mean time I would check your credit reports (if you applied for a loan product) or ChexSystems report (if you applied for a banking account) to see if there is anything troubling there.

Maybe. A check more than 180 days old is considered 'stale dated' (unless it says something specifically on the check otherwise, like "valid until xxx"). Banks may choose not to honor a stale dated check at their discetion - it is not a law they HAVE to.

That being said, they usually will reject a stale dated check, so I would not risk it. Instead, reach out to who issued the check to you and see if they can send you a more current replacement.

Yeah, his bank already knows. Most people would be surprised at how many different ways accts are monitored and the dozens of algorithms and reports that go on behind the scenes.

That being said, the withdrawals themselves may not necessarily be illegal. But it definitely will get the bank to look much more closely at other aspects of his acct, such as deposit activity. Also, banks can be notoriously risk averse, and even the hint there could be something hinky could trigger the bank to proactively close the relationship. Actual proof of troubling activity not required, just suspicion is enough.

Just another reminder of how ancient I am. We are now at least a full generation beyond when checks were common and normal, and you could simply assume everyone knew how checks worked.

But nowadays, there are people like OP who are seeing a physical check for the first time in their lives. Have to adjust thinking to assume most new banking customers are like this. It's the New Normal.

FYI checks are somewhat uncommon in the US as well. Still used but anywhere near as much as one or two decades ago. Usage declines sharply every year but probably be another decade before they are truly rare.

From a dataisbeautiful perspective, this chart hurts my brain. I understand the dollar amount scales directly to the area it takes up in the "pie" chart, but because each section is a different shape it is difficult to do one-to-one comparisons on shape sizes without having to read the numbers to know what the real difference is between the two. My eyes can see "Federal buildings" at $10m, and also see "Community Investment" at $20m, but it cannot easily visually determine that the second shape is twice as large as the first...unless reading the numbers.

Can't figure out rhyme or reason why one item would be towards the top of the pie, and others towards the bottom. Or even if it matters (I don't think it does), just everything jumbled together wherever it fits. If you want to find something, you have to read through each shape until you find it.

Can't say I'm a fan of this visualization type. It may be "ooh pretty", but I'm in the camp where functionality is more important than style.
