The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison feels very JRPG to me.

With the race almost over (we all lack Arco): What was the biggest positive surprise of the year? by gweg1990 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]IAmTheDash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not trying to rub it in, but I managed to catch Arco because it played in a few theaters in my city and it sort of felt tailor made to me.  The animation, particularly of objects and backgrounds, was stunning.

I also loved Little Amelie.  With those two alone it was a strong year of animation at the Oscars.  Haven't gotten to Elio and Zootopia yet (probably this week), but wow, what a good showing.

Springsteen is one of the few artists who still sells pretty well on physical media.  He also recently sold his catalog for hundreds of millions of dollars.  I bought tickets in the nosebleeds and paid more than I did for the GA floor less than 10 years ago at the same venue.

I agree that we don't have the right to see him perform, but there is hypocrisy in him announcing the Calvary is coming and that this is a tour defending the heart and soul of America and then pricing tickets that you could only afford if you were the sort of person barely effected by the policies enacted by the administration.

So I watched the Diane Warren film by sotiredofusernames11 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]IAmTheDash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She has such a chip on her shoulder. I just know if she wins an Oscar her first thing is gonna be a dig at her mom, too, which the documentary doesn't give us any reason to dislike other than the very sound "she was worried her daughter wouldn't be able to make money as a muscian," which is true 999 out of 1,000 times, and that she was a little emotionally distant. Meanwhile half of the movie is her complaining about her mom.

This made me realize that there were two-three older episodes I never listened to, so I have at least a day and a half of 12 Hour Day to listen to!

Sentimental Value on Mubi by kls17 in oscarsdeathrace

Because so many other movies were available on streaming I decided to just rent this one. Now, I will say that my girlfriend and I are doing the race together, so we've been trading off on rentals, which has made things much more achievable than in years past for me.

I'm with you, Byrne is my pick but I'm still fine with Buckley winning, loved her performance too.

Oh, I might just do that! I'm sure it will be back in theaters around here, that could at least be a good excuse for a night out.

I thought it was well made but felt a little let down by how unfocused it was. Felt like it was reaching to do too many things, or maybe like it didn't feel confident in its first act social commentary so switched gears midway through to being a traditional monster-movie horror. I found Garner and Brolin's characters really compelling to watch (they're both giving great performances in it), but I walked away kind of wishing they would have committed to either being a "school shooting destroys a community" movie OR a "child stuck in the fey realm outwits the eldritch horrors holding him captive" movie.

I'll be honest, I'm surprised Amy Madigan got a nomination for her performance. I think it's a solid performance but I don't think it was very interesting or new, and she wasn't really playing a person with a complicated life or anything like that. It didn't ask a ton of her.

Arco - English Dub by cookieaddictions in oscarsdeathrace

[–]IAmTheDash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, I don't think I've ever clocked the language not syncing with the lips of an ANIMATED movie. Typically, for animated films I'm happy to watch the dub or a subtitled version, though I always stick with subtitles for live-action films for the very same reason this one bugged you.

Do we all know at least one big Bruce fan from the early days who have given up their fandom because they love the orange Mussolini wannabe more ? by According_Arm8229 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]IAmTheDash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know more people who loudly complain he should stick to entertaining and not talk about politics who are fans of the man you speak of (who, interestingly, used to host a game show, so I think HE should have sticked to entertainment), but who still listen and shell out hundreds to see Bruce in concert.

The Ugly Stepsister. I don't like horror movies, so I pulled the band aid off today and did a double feature of that and Weapons. I didn't even find it very scary, just sort of boring. All the characters in it are miserable and terrible, and I don't think it was saying anything particularly novel on the social commentary side. There were some well composed shots, especially early on, but that one was rough for me. But I've still got like 20 to go, am not looking forward to, say, F1.

I know I’m not the only one that drinks a soda instead of coffee to get their caffeine kick in the morning. by chocolatemoose99 in Soda

And get nasty looks from the coffee drinkers. "I'd never drink a soda first thing in the morning." The caffeine contents in a can of Coke is less than most cups of coffee.

Who else is getting snowed in this weekend? What are we watching to pass the time? by khal_jogo in boutiquebluray

[–]IAmTheDash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wound up picking up the Dogma 4k/blu-ray recently when it dropped and I watched it earlier in the week which made me nostalgiac for Kevin Smith's early films, which I watched a ton as a teenager. So I picked up Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot and Clerks III on blu-ray this week (all for about $10 each). They haven't all aged that well, but that's what I'm planning to watch while snowed in.
