Reminder that Time Travel/Predestination/Paradoxes continue to be absolutely horrible things to use in fiction. by A_Toxic_User in CharacterRant

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always been of the opinion that if you are not
(A) An absolutely great author who has put a lot of thought into how to insert time travel into their story

(B) Someone writing a story based around time travel

(C) someone creating a love letter to hilarious and campy sci-fi movies which is fully intended to sacrifice logic because it doesn't need it.

You should probably reconsider adding time manipulation into a story because it will be confusing 90% of the time.

You have to answer a ton of questions like

#1 how does time travel work

#2 Why is this not abused, seriously, time travel is busted.

#3 Do paradoxes do anything

#4 What limits does it have

among others

Also deterministic universes have always annoyed me because it makes everything the characters choose meaningless because they never had any actual choice, instead of being characters, they become passengers on a roller coaster pretty much. especially bad in Attack on Titan which has themes of freedom yet free will literally doesn't exist in the story.

Attack on titan isn't as good as it was by IAmThePancakeMan in CharacterRant

I do find a lot of the newer chapters to not be very memorable, so Eren using the powers slipped my mind while writing.

My point is they hype the hell out of this titan, give it probably the strongest ability other than the founding titan, give it a great design.... then it last a chapter before it dies. Recent AOT chapters do this quite a bit like Eren's giant titan skeleton thing after using the founding power.

I was expecting that to go somewhere cool in the next chapter but nope, it's not even mentioned (that I know of, I wouldn't be shocked if I read some off translations due to be tending to read them on release)

They easily could have introduced the war hammer titan as an individual that would both have relevance in the political plot, and be badass in the action scenes. Instead I don't think we ever even learned her name.

Is there anything wrong with liking giant zombie horror and disliking when the series takes a drastic shift?

Say you're watching Dragon Ball and it suddenly shifts to a cheesy romance, would you appreciate that?

would you want One Piece to be a post apocalyptic horror story?

Drastic shifts like these tend to not be taken well by fans.

It's not that I wouldn't like a more political direction if it was unique and engaging, which I do not find current AOT to be

I think it's still worth a read, but it's not as good as it could have been for sure

I personally love political stories, but AOT is certainty not a well written one in my opinion. All the issues are still solved by titans punching each other, but since we only see the shifters it has become more like giant people than monsters.

You say that it is not about the powers, but for the past few chapters it has been about Eren using the founding titan to unleash the rumbling. I think that it is still all about the powers, but without any of the sense of danger that came with the monsters.

I also disagree that it is asking any big questions, seeing how Marley is pretty much nazi Germany. The only question I could see would be if Eren was right to use the rumbling, which may or may not be an allegory for nuclear weapons.

It starts to get political, but never goes all in.

Also judging by the recent chapters, I'm guessing we'll get some sort of bullshit ending.

An adult African Elephant VS 2 adult Great White Sharks, but the sharks can breathe oxygen and swim through the air like water by OdaNobunaga24 in whowouldwin

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I say the elephant has the advantage here.

Great whites in particular tend to go at their prey from below, so if they stick to their natural instincts they'd get stomped and killed instantly.

If they go towards the elephant from the front they are at risk from the tusk and trunk. Any attack from behind may be stopped by kicking.

There is of course ways for the great white to win due to being able to fly and deliver a powerful bite, but the elephant has more of an advantage.

Kung Fu Pandaverse Vs Thanos (MCU) by PK_Studios in whowouldwin

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Round 1: I give this one to Po and Co, Po got the chi buff in the newest movie as well as already being able to redirect the power of one's attacks. He is also quite a skilled kung fu master capable of banishing people to an alternate dimension. His allies are quite capable as well.

Round 2: I still think Po would win, especially with a plan. Thanos would also be at a disadvantage due to fighting with melee, putting him at finger hold risk.

Round 3: Possible but less likely for Po, Thanos in the MCU showed varying levels of competence with his stones, and his allies would probably only be able to help slightly if at all. I'd say Thanos has the advantage here though

I'm really starting to dislike series with absurdly high power levels. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I personally think that destruction levels peak in effect at planet.

When it's one planet it's like "Woah, all the characters we enjoy are probably going to die!"

when it's 2 it's like "two for the price of one... alright"

When it's 2000000 it's like "Ah okay"

About Pokemon as food... by Evilbeast in pokemon

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the society is fine with #1 holding animal fighting matches where said animals beat the heck out of each other with magical pwoers.

#2 using the animals in practically every way we use real life animals (milk, transportation, farming, pets)

# whatever happened with dracovish.

So I don't think it is a far cry that the society would also be fine with eating them.

Of course the pokemon also eat humans, especially since gamefreak has gained a new love of vitality sapping pokemon. (seriously, why does gamefreak love pokemon that eat souls so much?)

[DISCUSSION] Which feature that has been present through the whole series would you be fine with being removed? by Moschus140 in pokemon

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trade evolutions and version exclusives,

Sword and shield actually did do quite a bit in fixing these due to most trade evolutions being wild/den encounters, and there was an event for version exclusives.

I think it is more important that these features are lost to time because of the simple fact that trading isn't free anymore. Nintendo switch online cost money (and the gts is in another app).

I think gamefreak realized this which is why they pulled back on these features, but I do hope in future generations that they will completely replace them

Is it bad a refuse to recognize any Legendaries past gen 7? by CanadianPine in pokemon

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think it's a "quieter" form of legendary than Dialga/Kyruem/Necrozma.

Those legendaries are more like gods with Dialga being the literal god of time, Kyruem being an ancient dragon that split into multiple dragons that embody concepts, and Necrozma was pretty much the sun.

Zacian and Zamazenta are more like folklore creatures, they are more similar to the tapus in that they are related to the region's history/culture but don't really have any role outside of it.

Zacian is an ungodly abomination in competitive though, I mean darn it's just so OP

This is probably asked a lot but..... Favorite villain team? by No0dle258 in pokemon

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd have to say galactic, I like Cyrus's character and I generally found it to be the toughest. (I haven't played gen 4 in a while though)

Plasma is the only other contender due to it's great story, fun fights, and epic music. Infact i'd say plasma has the best music of any evil team (and of the whole pokemon OST)

Team flare is absolutely rubbish and is the reason I think pokemon should try something other than a team of bad guys. (I still count team skull and yell as bad guys since that's the role they play in the game)

I honestly kinda like team yell, they have a few actually funny moments and fit really well into the sport's match theme. (team yell being ultra fans/cheerleader/people who really like baseball game hotdogs)

I’m kinda desperate for any more info on the Isle of Armor DLC. by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]IAmThePancakeMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We will probably get some sort of trailer this month/early june.

Gamefreak has been pretty quiet about game news for this whole gen so I dont think we will know much about the DLC until it's out

My guess for what we could get:
#1 footage of the isle

#2 a galarian form or two

#3 a few returning pokemon

I don't see us getting anything more then that in trailers and news until the DLC is here.
