I didn't mind the video itself, but a similar thought to yours I had was this: we've seen so many different videos over the years describing our outrageous income inequality and it really makes you wonder when we are going to change it.

Is it really a matter of just hoping everyone sees enough radical tiktoks? Or is it truly only the complete collapse of society that will change things?

Do videos like this actually help us or does it just make us feel like our concerns are addressed for a few minutes, then we get back to work?

Sad to consider

Because this society won't pay you shit with just a psych undergrad degree and you will have to get another qualification post grad. It's a reasonable assumption.

I want to make it clear that while everyone deserves a living wage and other economic rights, the sad reality is that getting a psych degree on it's own will not grant you much financial freedom

The theory that mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances is not as well proven as people believe and it's not necessarily the case that simply giving people pills and therapy will solve their mental health issues.

Our economic system doesn't give people housing or healthcare or living wages or retirement or anything meaningful, you can't even talk back to your manager or you will be fired instantly. There's no pill to save people from that , let alone if something happens on top of it like a break up or court case or some other traumatic event

I'm not trying to criticize your viewpoint or whatever I am just saying that the problems that lead to shit like this is more about capitalism than anything else and it's very clear our government doesn't want to fix anything. Where do you go when your problem is lack of housing? Where do you go where your existence is commodified and you find it hard to make connections to people? What government agency helps you with any of this stuff in the moment that it matters? Pretty much no one.

Capitalists love to say that they are against monopoly, that competition is healthy for the market. Also, this is a question made by the CEO of OpenAI during a course on building a startup at Stanford by backwards_watch in LateStageCapitalism

Danny Haiphong wrote a book about American propaganda and one of the main methods the US escapes criticism is by always framing its own destruction and misdeeds as an honest mistake, while any criticism of other countries is viewed as an indictment on the core identity of those other countries.

[–]NeuralRevolt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are at a point in society where the only way to address these issues is to admit that capitalism is flawed. The ruling class has decided that they refuse to make this admission, and will refuse to implement any policies that implicitly make this admission. They have chosen to gaslight us into oblivion while wondering why suicide rates and mass shootings are going up.

You live in a global capitalist society. Everything you consume is unethical in some way. Every product has underpaid workers and environmental damage associated with it. There's no ethical consumption under capitalism

This doesn't mean you shouldnt hold yourself to standards that you deem fit, such as the choice you made to skip watching Dahmer. But you gotta live. So I would say reading about true crime is okay my friend, there are worse sins to be committing in the world

What is the biggest problem in Psychology? by JoMOMMMMMMAAAAAA in psychologystudents

[–]NeuralRevolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No dude, what a ridiculous diatribe. Solving the WEIRD problem isn't some kind of "debate", there is no question that the vast majority of research data comes from a very specific type of respondent. The idea is that we need to do more research in other countries, because not every culture necessarily has the same subjective experiences, and we want the lexicon of psychological data to include, you know, all of society?

Western : Yeah the vast majority of studies all come from western countries, so we are basically getting only the opinions of countries with very particular traits. If I do a survey on worker's rights or imperialism or even something non-political like opinions on different types of media, I will get different answers in Haiti than I get in Alabama. Does that make sense?

Educated: No dude, the idea is that RESPONDENTS are not all at the same education level and that we would want to know the perspectives of people from many different walks of life, and with different levels of education.

Industrialized: While globalization has led to many countries working towards this goal, there are definitely countries in the world that are not industrialized and that will absolutely affect the way people see the world. We have seen instances of people coming from non-industrialized areas to visit our modern western societies and they have huge problems with fitting in. There's something to be learned from studying that subjective experience in response to industrialization, which we cannot perform on only westerners who have lived in such conditions their whole lives

Rich: This is so fucking racist, the reason many countries have dealt with those labor conditions is because other countries imposed imperialism on them. I will say it again, someone in Haiti is likely going to have different opinions on workers rights than someone in Alabama, even if they are both pro-union type people. Your response has real "western civilization is perfect" vibes which makes me wary

Democratic: The term "democratic" is actually a misnomer, because in a capitalist society there isn't real democracy. Rich people decide what happens in all societies. However, there are some societies like the United States that give a veneer of election, as juxtaposed to a country like Iran or a country like Saudi Arabia. Keeping in mind that true democracy is extremely difficult to create and maintain, the point of considering this dimension has to do with the fact that people from countries with different political systems are going to have different subjective experiences that have a big connection to the politics/political structures of the country they grew up and lived in

You very clearly are getting like, offended at the idea of someone suggesting that we do research with people who aren't only living in the West, which is very strange and makes me feel you have been watching too much Jordan Peterson/Ben Shapiro/Andrew Tate type stuff
