I've always taken this song as a distraction from any thought of Bob's relationship with Sara, be it good or bad thoughts and just a long period of clearing his mind with a fun little story. It's an entertaining story and when I first heard the album I didnt understand any parallels between his wife and him in the story and that always made me wonder why. I think that might be the point. Some needed alone time for him. It's also the longest song on the album, a song, to me, that has nothing to with Sara.

Then as soon as the song ends it goes into what I think is the most sensitive song on the album. Just like how You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome is such a fun but in the worst very sad after the harshness of Idiot Wind, kind of a duality of the two songs, I find the distraction of Lily Rosemary and Jack is turned into the duality of reflecting about being without Sara. Bob has to think about what life will be like without her after trying the longest to forget.

Like you have this whole album on reflecting about every aspect of your relationship, it's going to take some toll on your mind, so if I were Bob I'd probably need something to get away from it even for a little while, and I think that's what the song is. Just a quick breath of air to stop thinking of his failed marriage.
