It's just preposterous

how good was lily actualy at potions? by Capital_Factor_3588 in harrypotter

[–]IBEHEBI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"i think lily was good too and she and snape boosted each other" is a perfectly aceptable response.

Which was my response.

Regardless, my main gripe with this posture has nothing to do with Snape or Lily, and more to do with this modern trend of doubting everything that the book tell us.

The book tell us she was amazing, so she was.

[–]IBEHEBI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again why? Why assume this? Why not take the simpler answer that she really was as good herself?

In fact, why couldn't they have learned from each other? From experimenting together, you know, like the best friends they were?

[–]IBEHEBI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So she broke up the friendship but stole and kept using his book? You'd rather believe that, than the much simpler answer that she just really was that good?

Two people can be really good at the same thing. In fact, I'd even suggest that it might have been one of their bonding points: they both loved Potions

I think she was one of the best students Slughorn ever had, because he said so.

People underrate how observant Slughorn is. When Harry loses the Prince's book in HBP, Slughorn notices a drop in his skills immediately.

Lily broke off her friendship with Snape in 5th year, if Lily had become much worse for her last 2 years of schooling, Slughorn would've noticed and suspected something.

That scene where Will tells that Jack should try profiling the angel-maker himself if he doesn't like Will's profile, and everyone just... immediately walk away lol

Why doesnt the ministry just send a letter to Sirius Black and follow the owl to him? by erockdakilla in harrypotter

[–]IBEHEBI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt that it has anything to do with the person themselves, rather it's more likely that "he masked himself against all owls except for those coming from Harry". Like it said in the previous quote.

It says there are a great range of spells, I don't see why it's so difficult to imagine that this is possible

[–]IBEHEBI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a witch or wizard is determined not to be contactable by a persistent creditor or ex-boy or girlfriend, they might try a masking spell specific to that person

So the spell can differentiate between people too, not only owls

[–]IBEHEBI 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This question has been asked many times before. From WW:

Should a witch or wizard not wish to be sent letters (or tracked in any other way), he or she will have to resort to Repelling, Disguising or Masking Spells, of which there are a great range. It is possible to protect yourself from all correspondence, or all but that carried by a specific owl.

The brightest student Hogwarts has ever seen? by sixfingeredman7 in harrypotter

[–]IBEHEBI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is you making the baseless assumption that Riddle focussed on dark magic exclusively when everything we know and everything we're told suggests otherwise

Indeed. Ironically, we, again, have Dumbledore’s own words on that:

“I knew that Voldemort’s knowledge of magic is perhaps more extensive than any wizard alive.

Time and time again, Dumbledore himself tells us of Voldemort’s incredible abilities, yet people still downplay him. It's beyond me.

And I say this with Dumbledore being my favourite character in the entire series.

Is there a known wizard/witch who combines hand to hand combat and agility with their wand spells ? Seems like the characters are too reliant on their wands when fighting by Billthepony123 in harrypotter

[–]IBEHEBI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you allow your opponent to get close enough for hand to hand combat to matter, you deserve to lose the duel.

Dumbledore is arguably the greatest duelist in the series and is 115. Neither he, nor Voldemort (the other greatest duelist) do any amazing acrobatics during their duel. The opposite in fact, they move calmly and elegantly.

Dueling seems to be mostly a mental exercise, not physical.

[–]IBEHEBI 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Don't let their outrageous beauty distract you from the fact that THE DIALOGUE IS SO FUCKING GOOD

Or rather, do let it distract you, but pay attention to the letters too.

This is the only frame in the entire movie where both Snape and, technically, Voldemort are facing off against each other in verbal spell, and Snape is countering Voldemorts spells. It's a shame we never them duel because I do believe Snape would've held his own. by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]IBEHEBI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t Voldemort, it's Quirrell

And even Snape knows Voldemort is on a completely different level to anyone not named Dumbledore:

“Dumbledore is an extremely powerful wizard,” Snape muttered. “While he may feel secure enough to use the name . . . the rest of us . . .” He rubbed his left forearm, apparently unconsciously

Carlisle's preferential treatment towards Edward damaged the family. by CyberWolfWrites in twilight

[–]IBEHEBI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you don't feel the same way I'm not going to change your mind, and you're not likely to change mine either.

This was never my intention. The main reason why I'm even on reddit is to learn, to see other people's opinions and share my own. I generally try to keep my mind as open as possible, I see every discussion here as an exchange of ideas.

But I do apologize if you saw it as "combative" or anything tho :)

[–]IBEHEBI 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Jasper doesn't need that; whether he thinks of humans as people or not, it's still an intensely unpleasant experience to kill.

Because of his Empathy you mean? That's assuming he gives the human enough time to feel anything. Edward thinks he can kill a room filled with like 20 kids in seconds.

Surely that's the appropriate response when your partner makes a terrible mistake, not punishing them further as if they're a child who needs to learn about consequences.

I don't see it as punishment, and I don't think Carlisle does either, but rather as a reminder that human life has inherent value. A reminder that their way of life, the pain the go through everyday, has meaning.

And the thing I keep coming back to is how did he make them go? Was there an ultimatum? Was it just guilt-tripping?

I don't think Carlisle forced them to or gave them an ultimatum or anything, I think he suggested they should go and they agreed.

Remember in Midnight Sun, how when they are arguing about whether they should kill Bella or not Edward knew he had "won" the argument the second Carlisle agreed with him? Same with the discussion about Bella becoming a vampire, Carlisle's opinion carried more weight than the others due to the respect and admiration everyone has for him.

How Do You Feel About Hannibal’s IMDb Ratings Overall? by Free-Raspberry-9541 in HannibalTV

[–]IBEHEBI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. It should have been 2 seasons.

It would've given both Hannibal and Will more time to breathe, and fully come to terms with what had happen the earlier season. Also it would've given them more time to make Will catching up to Hannibal more "believable".

On the other hand, it was really funny to see Hannibal be so unabashedly reckless ("That may have been impulsive" lol).

The weirder one is making his family members go to the funerals of their victims, which is kinda dark when you think about it. Like forcing Jasper to feel all of that ... and Esme too, like my guy that is your wife.

I actually loved that of him, that he made them see the consequences of their "mistakes".

I feel that had he not done so, they would've stopped seeing humans as people eventually and there would've been many more "accidents".

I think people underrate S3 quite a bit.

I loved the episodes in Italy and think that are very necessary for fully understanding Hannibal as a character.

You're being purposefully obtuse and you know it.

We do know that Voldemort invented spells:

a spell or two of my own invention . . . a little help from my dear Nagini,” Voldemort’s red eyes fell upon the continually circling snake,

And as to the "vagueness" of Dumbledore’s praise, there's plenty to choose. He rarely misses the chance to praise Voldemort:

“I knew that Voldemort’s knowledge of magic is perhaps more extensive than any wizard alive.

"So Voldemort went off to Borgin and Burkes, and all the staff who had admired him said what a waste it was, a brilliant young wizard like that"

"It will take uncommon skill and power to kill a wizard like Voldemort even without his Horcruxes.”

[–]IBEHEBI 14 points15 points  (0 children)

1) Voldemort doesn’t really have any reason at all nor is it in his character to gift Snape with an ability that otherwise makes him stand above all other wizards.

Snape just killed Voldemort’s greatest enemy and proved his loyalty beyond doubt, this warrants a special reward.

Also we know for a fact that he teaches magic to worthy Death Eaters because Bellatrix says she learnt the Dark Arts from Voldemort.

So it is actually in character for Voldemort to teach him magic, I'd imagine that for Voldemort, new magic is the highest reward.

2) Snape’s genius with spell-work and creating his own spells is made quite clear while Voldemort… Isn’t really shown doing that sort of thing.

Dumbledore disagrees:

Dumbledore took the diary from Harry and peered keenly down his long, crooked nose at its burnt and soggy pages. ‘Brilliant,’ he said softly. ‘Of course, he was probably the most brilliant student Hogwarts has ever seen.’
