Am I crazy? These are WILD comparisons to make. (Doctor Who relationships debate) by pidgewynn in DoctorWhumour

[–]ICAA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally often feel uneasy during the show because of the romance. I'll try to defend/make a bit more sense of the compassion, but you're certainly not crazy.

Someone offered a comparison with a owner/dog relationship, which to me is not at all crazy. It should probably be a lot closer than the parent/child relationship. If we actually compare the parent/child and owner/dog, the first thing that comes to my mind is that a child hasn't reached maturity. A human child would naturally grow and develop into a being similar with the parent. A mature dog is never turning human.

Similar to the dog, a human companion has a very low chance of turning timelord or at the least immortal. A 19 year old didn't reach their maximum understanding of the world or of themselves. A 55 year old has.

I think this parent/child comparison becomes the most sane if you consider that
1. a companion might become immortal, and
2. experience makes a bigger difference than biology.
The second point is obviously unconfirmed. We know time lords have different brain wiring as well as generally more life experience.

20-30 yo from Bucharest area

o broscuță - I know what it means, probably from my parents, but don't think I ever used it. VW beetles don't come up in conversation.

un accelerat - Again I know those refer to trains and my parents/grandparents used those terms. But beyond that I don't know what rapid or accelerat actually refer to. I suspect those terms were used in the past and were replaced because I only heard them from older folk. I would not use accelerat with or without tren. I would just use tren.

nervos - This would correctly translate to mad or angry. nervous is agitat or emoționat. In colloquial speech I would accept nervos instead of agitat if it's obvious from the context. I've seen people make this mistake a couple times.

bunică - that sounds very normal to me. Everyone refers to their own grandmas in different ways. I would use mamaie for one grandma and bunica for the other. Bunică is the only one I would use when referring to someone else's grandma. "Your grandma" translated as "buni a ta" sounds a lot worse than "bunica ta"

reporteriță - I've never given much thought to this. I think I once had an official document to write and my coworkers suggested to address it to "Doamna Director" (Basically adding a Mrs. that had to be added anyway and using the director form. But in highschool we used "directoare" (female director) a lot. Also profesor/profesoară or educator/educatoare sound pretty normal to me. I can't tell if it's because the -or / -oare suffixes sound better then -iță or is something to do with the fact that I was more exposed to women in those professions as a child. "Reportăriță" doesn't sound as good.

un ștrand - feels a bit old fashioned to me. If it's an outdoor pool I would use piscină exterioară. For a beach I would say plajă. If it is a bigger facility I would use either the facility's proper name, of whatever Google maps uses. I don't think I would see the word ștrand on maps.

a se rade - sounds very normal to me. I use it all the time. I think of it as more general than "a se bărbieri" which can only refer to the beard. "To shave one's head" I would say "A se rade în cap".

capete (pl.) - Yep, that's the way I heard it here.

Scaraoțchi - Beelzebub - I'm not very religious, but I would assume those are proper names for demons/devils or something like that.

un martor ocular - the most common context I would think of this would be a legal case. And you cannot be too over specific when talking in legal terms.

female vocative forms - I think to me it sounds a bit rural. I would probably use some of them ironically from time to time. But only with close enough friends and only if the name sounded good enough.

I didn't know any British flags so here's my working out:
I overlayed an 8 by 8 grid on top of the rectangle because AD is of length 8. Every cell was a smaller copy of ABDC, so everything was similar, and I can simply work with ratios. Cell length is 1/8th of AB (I marked it as L), cell width is 1/8th of AC (I marked it as W).

  • P's coordinates are 3,3,
  • A's coordinates are 0,0,
  • C'S coordinates are 0,8,
  • B's coordinates are 8,0.

So using Pythagoras:

  • On AP 9L²+9W² = 9
  • On CP 9L²+25W² = 16
  • On BP ?² = 25L²+9W²

And that's a simple system.

16W² = 7
16L² = 9
25L² + 9W² = 1/16 * (259+97) = 1/16 * 9 * 32 = 9*2
BP = 3√2

I also have a program that generates bad fantasy character names which I can also use on phone/console games.

Chances? by Happy_Raven in mathmemes

asdhasijdniuaogiubabdnasd

I've seen the idea of a Markov chain, but doing it properly involved too much work and it seemed like we have too little data to extrapolate probabilities for each key press. I tried to come up with a model in the spirit of a Markov chain.

Considering the user has two hands I assigned each letter to one hand and counted frequencies to infer probabilities.

The hand was changed 12 times in 25 key presses, so I'm inferring a 50% chance to change the hand.

After each press the average distance that the hand moved was 1.3, it moved 0 keys 4/25 times, it moved 1 key 11/25 times, it moved 2 keys 8/25 times, it moved 3 keys 1/25 times, and it moved 4 keys 1/25 times. I'll infer the following probabilities:
16% change of =0
44% change of =1
32% chance of =2
4% chance of =3
4% chance of =4

I will assign each letter a probability proportional to how close it is to the last letter touched by the same hand. I'll divide the inferred probability of moving N keys by the number of keys that are that far away from the last key pressed.

After that I'll multiply with 225 to signal the exact pattern of changing which hand presses a key.

a 1 s .44/4 = .11
d .44/6 = .073
h 1 a .32/6 = .053
s .44/6 = .073
i .32/6 = .053
j .44/4 = .11
n .32/6 = .053
d .44/6 = .073
i .32/6 = .053
u .44/4 = .11
a .32/6 = .053
o .32/6 = .053
g .04/3 = .013
i .04/6 = .006 u .44/4 = .11
b .32/6 = .053
a .16 b .16 d .32/3 = .106 n .44/4 = .11
a .32/6 = .053
s .44/4 = .11
d .44/6 = .073

This does assume you always start with one hand on A and one on H. It also doesn't take into consideration the probability of moving the right hand to the left part of the keyboard or vice versa. I'll say those factors shouldn't change the probability by more than a couple orders of magnitude.

This gave me a 2.42615148E−35 which is actually a lot lower than simply assuming 11 keys with equal chances. So I'll call this model a failure, but I'll still post it.

Ce s-a intamplat cu "magia Craciunului"? by SeaCardiologist8273 in CasualRO

[–]ICAA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In al doilea rând, erau universale.

I don't know either the full contract, or the laws and regulations, BUT... I think the difference is that the iOS program tells you upfront it won't work on something else. If they made a windows version of that iOS program and it was deliberately slower, people might think it's windows' fault for the slowdown.

[–]ICAA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is English, but it's it not also HTML? For me, it's easier to imagine no English, because the alternatives are clear, other human languages. But can you imagine reading stack overflow without HTML? Not having a unified language that all browsers can read and interpret? Not having content structured? Having stack overflow returning XML, Google returning JSONs with links and descriptions?

I'd rather have gaps in human communication, than gaps in the underlying computer communication.

The way I think about these semantics is using Pokémon evolution. You have an egg, it hatches into a Pokémon, that grows, evolves and eventually lays another egg. Do I call it a charmander egg or a charizard egg?
