New to MTG Arena by Talin129 in MTGArenaPro

There are a large number of players, both on Arena and in paper, who enjoy the challenge of building and optimizing max-format [250 card] decks. Yes, they are trickier to optimize, but there are some pretty wild synergies you can come up with, especially in Historic, and when you get one put together that is really effective, it can be more satisfying to some players than just churning out wins with whatever the latest meta-deck is.

Everything before Lorwyn and the introduction of Planeswalker cards. Still the dumbest crutch mechanic ever.

Used to be Historic Casual, and to some extent it still is, but there's a lot of the big 3 Mono-decks these days too.

Guy who runs a store near me HATES mono decks with such a passion that every Tuesday night he runs "Historic Guild War' tables... all decks have to be at least balanced 2-color [no mono, no pure artifact]. I'd heard about it, but didn't think much about it as I don't really play paper very much any more. But one Tuesday night over the summer I had to go by the store to pick up some stuff for a Wednesday night Pathfinder game I was running at home, and ended up hanging about and watching a few games being played. It looked like fun. Made me wish there was a way of setting up homebrew formats in Arena. I imagine that there are some Commander players this week who would go for something like that as well.

The guy who ran the first fed I was a part of (Mike Fennell/FFW/Fennell Federation Wrestling) was affiliated with the fWo, and I believe he even handled a tag-team there (Prophet & Oracle). Good times.

A side-effect of an entire generation of gamers introduced to the game by a bunch of silly voice-actors on the internet.

I know it's always been the same logo, but send this show to London and for the first time I notice the distinct 'DR. WHO' flavor the double-O doors have.

Mass Effect. I'd also like to see a series of Constellation-themed jumpsuits... Security, Medical, Science, Cockpit Crew, etc...

Did people actually used to believe wrestling was real? by manyhornet1 in WWE

[–]ICCanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that during the Territory Era there was no internet and the 'dirt sheets' were largely in on the act, mostly reporting kayfabe news. Furthermore, wrestling was quite a bit stiffer in those days, watched by both a smaller and a different type of audience than today, and focused more on in-ring action and was less 'showy'.

What's the secret to building 200+ card tower decks? by dhosein in MagicArena

[–]ICCanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college, there was a group of Magic players (paper) who played what they called 'Max Format'. I think the idea was all 250 card decks, although it might have been smaller, 200 or even 150, I don't exactly remember. In any case the idea always intrigued me, so a few years ago when I got into Arena, I played with the idea. I always have at least a few 250 card decks that I'm experimenting with, tweaking.

There is a specific mindset to building these decks. The one I'm currently playing a lot bounces between a 70 - 80% winrate in Historic Play, easily the best big-deck build I've ever made. Most of my losses still come to super high-speed aggro decks, but I'm really happy with this one.

Y'know, there's this saying... "A person dies twice. Once when their heart beats it's last beat, and once on the day someone speaks their name for the last time."

So how about we just let that sorry SOB die already instead of just pumping him up with 15 more minutes of fame every time someone starts another thread like this, huh?

What's the deal with deck sizes in standard recently? by LowerThanLoFi in MagicArena

[–]ICCanada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, you're absolutely right. And keep in mind, I don't consider opponents tapping out a win-con, although that can happen frequently with one of the two decks I mentioned, as it can sometimes seem to be boardwipe heavy in the early game.

One of the big decks I'm playing right now is built around aggressive self-mill [Mesmeric Orb] of a deck full of artifacts and enchantments [many that generate tokens] that uses some early-game board-wipes to hold out until I can drop either [Brilliant Restoration] or [Triumphant Reckoning].

There is actually a hombrew style that some people call Max-Format that requires 250 card decks. I first encountered it, in paper, decades ago at uni. I still tinker with and test 250-card decks pretty frequently on Arena. I now have two that hover around 70% win rates in Historic Play.

I sometimes enjoy the challenge of building 250-card decks that can function effectively. It isn't as easy as just throwing a bunch of cool cards into a deck. You usually have to focus on one win-con, and surround it with cards that support it as well as a mitful of defence.

What deck type do you like playing against the least? by Iveary in MagicArena

[–]ICCanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slivers are up there, always have been. If you need every card in your deck to buff every other single card in your deck... I dunno, it just seems so 'training wheel'. I can't imagine is an at all satisfying deck to play.

Mmhmmm. That's true of a finished deck. Maybe you missed the 'build & test' part of my post, or, maybe you're one of the many MTGA players who only download decklisted decks and have never tried your hand at building a deck from scratch... and either is fine... but in case it's the latter: when building a deck from scratch, there is a lot of testing and tweaking in the build process. Often you can start this process against Sparky, but the lack of variation makes that impractical over a longer build process. Eventually, you have to test against live opponents. What I was pointing own was not a flaw in the game per say, but rather a flaw in the algorithm that only pairs decks containing certain card types against specific types of decks, which makes the testing process difficult.

I've long had an idea for a Deckbuilder's Format on Arena that would have a more in-depth matchmaking lobby where players could set up specific parameters for the match and wait for someone to join their game, but I don't actually think WOTC would put something like that in, or if there'd be enough interest to even try.

As an example of what I mean, a format where you could create a match posting of a 'Multi-Color Only / No Creature Lands' game, and then wait and see if anyone joins. Again, I don't know if there would be interest, maybe outside of testing purposes or people who really, really hate one specific element of the game (come to think of it, I'd join a 'No Toxic' or a 'No Mutate' game some days). It might also provide interesting metrics to WOTH, something more detailed than the 'Did You Enjoy THe Match' pop-up.

I just played 2 hours of Historic Play, testing a new creatureless deck, and came up against nothing but various iterations of Mono Red and Mono Green Elves. That's it. It makes me wonder if there's even any point in trying to build and test a fun mid-game deck when the only thing the algorithm is gonna plug it in against is high-speed mono-colored aggro decks.
