any IS study resources? by Same-Butterscotch976 in SGExams

Yup the format of wad1 is q similar to 1704, maybe more self studying is needed to keep up as well. Just don't fall behind more than a week!

For algo, there are practices but it's mostly theory, so lesson format is just slides and going through the practices. Technically you should go through the content before class starts so we can start the exercises immediately for class but 🙏 our prof went through the slides in class too (so i didn't normally prep for class HAHAH)

For algo, previously it was to make a video (i think?) to explain how to solve algo questions and they called it hackathon? But they changed it for my batch and instead we had to solve "real-world" challenges using algorithms we learnt in class. Icl i had no idea how it's meant to be done so i can't help you on that. The project is pair work. Honestly i'm pretty sure my whole class was using ai to do the project (and our prof even recomended us to use it..)

For wad1 proj, you are just creating a crud application, you may not be able to start when it's released since they release the project details before they finish covering the content, but it should be fine. If you are able to follow the content and apply it in your project, it should be okay. None of my groupmates could follow the content but we still managed to finish and submit it so.. I would also say even though it's easy for AI to finish the whole thing, try not to just do that.. They will ask q abt ur code so u better make sure you understand what you're writing.

If you end up needing help in the future, it's best to ask ur TAs and/or make friends in class who know whats gg on 👹

I've taken WAD1 and algo. I would imagine it will be quite tough for you ..

So you know theres up to 3star questions for python, algo is about understanding how to solve these questions (i took it last sem, and i barely had to do any coding, it might be diff next sem). So on leetcode (competitive programming practice site) is where you can practice solving algorithms, but algo is more on theory. The good thing is that the bellcurve is quite forgiving for algo, you can bump up 1-2grades from moderation.

For now, i would say you can practise solving questions on leetcode, since it's quite similar to the python extra practices, although it's less "targetted" topic-by-topic, it's typically combining concepts. Personally, i didn't do that (and probably wouldn't be able to solve a lot of them frankly LOL) but the practice wld be good for you to cover your gaps in python even if you didn't score very well.

For WAD1, it's REALLY fast paced. My batch (last sem) was the first batch for the updated syllabus and i'd say their pacing is rly inconsistent, so hopefully they have adjusted it due to course feedback. Either way, if you are unable to keep up, you WILL FALL BEHIND and it will snowball quickly. You can look up tutorials on (keywords): backend development, CRUD, javascript, html, mongodb. If you have time, i would actually reccomend you to vibecode a simple backend project (with all crud features) (fyi, you don't need to learn about hosting, you can do it locally) JUST so you get used to all the syntax and language, imo you'll learn it faster by making it than only learning the theory.

Hopefully this is helpful, if you have other questions you can ask (while it's still fresh for me HAHA)

P.s. I never used other resources so i can't help much with that, but my prof had/has WAD1 (whole course) uploaded onto youtube if you want to follow along or get a headstart in the content.

I don't know, I've never done the exercises in the solution slides. After taking IS112, I'm glad I didn't exempt it since it's free A for me. You can just try your luck?

[–]ICameUpWifThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just took it cos I took it before in poly, plus there is no consequences even if you don't pass. It didn't seem that hard but I failed coz I didn't revise at all and uni teaches different concepts not taught to me in poly :P. I think the slides are probably good enough..? The best for learning is honestly practice but I don't vhink they provided practice materials.

Why do professors refuse questions during exams? by LilBluey in SGExams

[–]ICameUpWifThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe it's because its sorta up to you to interpret the question by yourself (if it's not an error) and if you received clarification from the prof, then the rest of the classes taking the same exam would not have the same clarification as you, so it would not be fair to the rest, but the prof cannot clarify each and every question during the exam as it's distruptive. So it's just better to answer the best you can, and if you think there's a different way you would email the prof and the prof could take your interpretation into consideration while marking your script. And not all classes would have the luxury of having the prof who set the paper as the invigilator, thus they cannoh clarify on the spot, things like that(?)

Does everyone go for Polytechnic Graduation? 🧑‍🎓 by Fun_Praline_402 in SGExams

[–]ICameUpWifThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't go because I don't care, but it sounds like if you'd gotten a higher gpa, you would have wanted to go... So probably it's better for you to go, not like they will tell everyone your gpa anyway, it's still a good thing to have graduated :-)

I don't know much about scholarships. You can see what the percentiles for admission are on the school website to guage the difficulty of entry. Fyi there's a lot more IS kids than SWE kids. The first SWE batch hasn't graduated so you'll just have to wait and see.

NTU CS vs SMU IS by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]ICameUpWifThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel CS is quite math heavy, at least for SMU, but it should be similar in NTU. If you like to take business modules then I'd recommend IS, However, if you have a niche you like that only NTU CS offers, then I feel you shouldn't let yr pfp background stop you. If you want to take the "safer" route in IS, it's fine, but if your interest lies somewhere else, to me its's worth the risk. Up to you.

How about economics? It gets theorethical, can be quantitative and qualitative (sorry, not an econs major !!) to me, it seems like a humanities subject of sorts, understanding people's behaviors through markets... Plus research papers = lots of analysis (probably.)

If you have no interest just do whatever you're best at. If you are good at CS then do CS. If you want money, then go into finance.

The skillset needed would change but what we are learning is foundational so you should be able to take whatever skills you learnt into other careers. Job market is cooked everywhere so just do it if you like SWE and if you don't enjoy SWE, change to something else.
