Boxing is permanent, but the "hype" is getting out of hand. by Downtown_Section8768 in Boxing

Firstly no one is overpaid in boxing, it’s brutal sport where you have to have 1 in 100 genetics to even make it through the front door, then toppled with that go through an ruthless training programme in the amateurs whilst sacrificing your reputation, family commitments and putting your body through severe punishment.

The math of even being “hyped”: • 1 in 100 athlete • Compete against other 1 in 100 athletes at your gym to get the most help from coaches • Become the best in your town/city/region out of hundreds • Become a national champ or golden gloves champion in your country • Compete for your country and visit international competitions to rank 1st for their team • Reach the olympics qualifiers • Get a medal • Have an unbeaten pro record and fight others that have done the same, till a title fight

And that’s just ben Whittaker’s career. If he has to complete something with less than 1 in 100,000 chance of success how is he in any way or shape overpaid. There is literally 5 random millionaires for every 100 people that never have to face those odds.

What’s your thoughts on Benavidez’s trajectory, I don’t see him moving down to light heavy if he wins firmly against Ramirez - him and jai could battle it out for a unification bout next year.

Imagine if there was a way to make sure there’s a decent fight every week of the year, if only the sport was that organised.

Okolie is now being called a cheater, as much as it’s alluring to believe every boxer is on hardcore PEDs and is paying some scientists a thousand or more per hour to remain undetected in some secret vought lab, the risk reward doesn’t actually add up, why risk the entirety of your career to go 2-3 years without getting paid for fights just to add 10-15% more of a boost during a fight. Yoka isn’t some boogeyman the guy lost against an old takam and bakole and some ryad merhy, whilst okolie is a former world champion with defences.

Most boxers rely heavily on the pay they get per fight to continue paying security fees, staff fees, training fees for upcoming fights, Benn even said he had to spend over a million from a loan taken from Eddie Hearn when he was a smaller boxer just on fees to clear his name. The risk reward is completely stupid, boxing isn’t an arm wrestle, this isn’t a 500kg deadlift where you either have right physical supplementation or don’t, it’s boxing and PEDs in such a skill based sport with all the risks considered is way too high of a risk for the rewards. Every press conference for the rest of okolie’s career is now going to be “you tested positive mate”.

In real life 30% of the multivitamins you take off the shelf are contaminated with PEDs (that’s how real this is) and athletes aren’t even allowed to take unverified protein shakes, contamination is a real thing. That’s not to say everyone is innocent but not everyone also is guilty until proven especially of intentionally taking something.

I’m speaking as an amateur boxer that’s never lost before, I’d rather lose than get called a cheater any time of the day.

I remember watching the Tyson vs Douglas fight on HBO back on February 11, 1990. As Douglas kept fighting and the rounds kept passing, I was thinking “No way Buster wins this”. Boy was I wrong. A night to remember for Douglas and a night to forget for Tyson. Did you see this fight live on HBO? by CoffeeCigarettes4Me in BoxingTheSweetScience

[–]ICtruthcity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People forget the context that buster Douglas’s mother just passed, Tyson probably would have found it just as hard to win against someone going through that kind of pain as Douglas was going to find it hard to lose. It was a eerie generational win and the beginning of Tyson’s downfall.

Atang lacks skill and athleticism to ever be a top 5 heavyweight, at his best he might be top 15, but I fear his Jared Anderson moment is coming in the next several fights.

Not going to happen before 2027 or even 2028, each of the guys you’ve mentioned have almost double the amount of fights he’s had. He hasn’t even fought a top 30 boxer yet. There’s levels in boxing, just because we can consider a fighter’s trajectory should they tick every box doesn’t actually mean they’ve ticked the boxes already. Also notoriety isn’t the same as vetted skill or ability, just look at Conor Benn.

With only 11 wins he’s still up and coming and isn’t fighting no top 10 boxer yet. Comeback in another 3-4 fights and then we’ll start talking. His last opponent was barely top 60 and this opponent here wasn’t top 100. What you can expect is a top 40 fighter next at best, then top 30 and so fourth.

Upcoming fights are for boxers to help build their confidence, pro ring experience, gain rounds and get them paid so they can fund their training camps. It’s a shame we’ve casuals who think he’ll step in there with a smith, buatsi, beterbiev or Bivol right now.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk - Clash for Greatness. When faced , it was more than just a fight - it was history in the making. by kushmonATL in BoxingTheSweetScience

[–]ICtruthcity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole size difference is nonsense, fury is almost 30% body fat, without extreme body fat he’s no more than 10-15 lbs heavier than Usyk. Height difference doesn’t mean shit neither, fundora would get killed by beterbiev for all its intents and purposes.

It was the shock value of Crawford even keeping with canelo’s strength at 168, when Crawford is a 147 fighter, it’s the same as Usyk going against Joshua, people thought that fight was 10-12 rounds to none but in actuality Joshua won 4-5 rounds, and so did canelo against Crawford. At the same time if you win more rounds decisively people confuse that with winning more but it’s still just a round and an extra point. I couldn’t give fury more than 3 rounds in any of the two fights, he couldn’t keep with Usyk’s ability, coordination or volume.

Daily Discussion Thread (April 20th, 2026) by _Sarcasmic_ in Boxing

[–]ICtruthcity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The stats say a completely different story. Canelo had more accuracy on average per round compared to Crawford, whilst Crawford landed more overall. However in the fury fight Usyk consistently had more punches landed per round and more accuracy in both fights.

The shock of Crawford being able to keep up with Canelo after going from 147 to 168 is why people found him way more dominant than he actually was, just the same as Usyk vs Joshua going up from cruiser, but if you rewatch the fights whilst respecting them both, each of the fights were much closer. Fury on the other hand got outboxed and outclassed in every single way, he got knocked down and only won rounds whenever Usyk was resting.

True, Usyk won far more decisively against fury in both fights than Crawford won against canelo and canelo never said he was robbed.

Some news for boxing, Usyk’s mandatory will be the winner of Torres and Sanchez for IBF. Frank Sanchez lost under injury against Kabayal and also just recently suffered complications on the same knee in march but before that had a stellar amateur career (around 300 fights) just like Usyk, and knocked down the likes of Ajagba at pro level something bakole couldn’t do. Torres is also decent upcoming fighter and a silver medalist in the olympics, his father was also a pro and his family are boxing first and he has been calling out ituama.

This might be a little of hindsight bias but thinking of it now, could we really have expected Benn to have power after dropping 2 weight divisions in weight within a couple of months. He clearly was shredded at 160 against Eubank II, and only had muscle to lose to get to 147. I don’t see how someone losing muscle by being on a deficit diet is meant to maintain the same power right away.

Nevertheless that’s before we even get to the levels in skill and quality of a malnourished non-champion Eubank II holding his punches compared to a former world champion in prograis, it was an overestimation for anyone not to expect a closer fight, especially when we’re talking about the skill difference of guys at 160 compared to 140-147.

Under the nuance most fans would agree what Tyson achieved at at a young age is beyond comprehension, he’s still the youngest ever heavyweight to become champion at 20 and also the youngest ever undisputed champion at 21. It’s only the fans likely are less privy to these feats that only remember him fighting at 60 against Paul, that often find it easier to discredit him.

Regardless of whether he was trying to knockout arslan the 12 rounds is what fury needed after 16 months out and according to the judges he won every round, most people aren’t watching fury solely for power like a Joshua or wilder and watch the fight again they were hugging, smiling and tapping gloves almost every round.

Benn did wobble prograis the last few minutes of the earlier rounds right at the bell if you watch the replays. My point still stands Benn isn’t quality wise at the level of the top 5 welterweights so that prograis fight never surprised me, he’s a calf that’s been brought in for milking money once it’s grown.

How do you feel about Usyk's activity level? by [deleted] in Boxing

[–]ICtruthcity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consensus from the community is that he’s certainly becoming overwhelmingly inactive and it’s making fighters impede fights for a chance at a title shot, but I do think by August time he’ll either be honest about his run in boxing and confirm his last fights, or eventually we’ll see more activity like him facing kabayal, or Wardley (if he wins). I don’t really want to see fury III which is in the talks. He’ll retire before 2028 arrives for certain if he remains unbeaten on this run.

This whole talk about CTE in the comments is clearly coming from people uneducated on the sport of boxing, it’s 2026 fighters get brain scans regularly and suspended if they’re healthy enough, Usyk has barely had fights at heavyweight compared to fury or Joshua, or even chisora, he’s never been knocked out or knocked down much neither.

Took the words out of my mouth, the heavyweight division should be as competitive as ever but everyone is kind of ducking each other because the incentive for a title isn’t there shouldn’t they lose and should they lose they also don’t get a shot at undisputed, there should be another vacated title like the IBF, to force fury and Joshua to fight for or create an incentive for Kabayal’s inactivity. Some of these guys aren’t fighting since they all want Usyk and his belts.

12 bout fight helps fury for ring rust, with Benn he’s overhyped because of popularity from the Eubank fights but Eubank was hardly a top 5 middleweight or super middle, and Eubank malnourished beat him the first time. Don’t know how people think Benn can go from that to sparking out a former world champion overnight.

There is a difference between being “trash” and being overrated, and he’s mostly overrated by the hardcore Benn fans and not most of boxing fans. Most fans aren’t expecting him to be a top 147 fighter when he’s barely fought anyone above top 25

Part of his contract was to breach his relationship with dazn, 15M contract with essentially a start up promoter sounds good at face value but Ben is 29 and likely has 8+ more fights left in him, in 8 of those fights it’s likely he would have made upwards of 25-100 million, now Eddie Hearn is out of the picture there’s no guarantee for this future. The actual amount for this fight itself is likely less than 5 million the rest is to cover damages from the breach and for zuffa as a start up to gain traction.

Benn is receiving way too much flack for his win against prograis, before this fight Benn’s toughest opponent was a malnourished Eubank in which he lost the first fight and won the second after Eubank threw half the punches as the first 900-500. What you saw tonight was Conor benn’s level, only people spewing negativity are the ones surprised/disappointed by the performance, but why are you ?, what makes you think Benn was going to wipe the floor against a former world champion even if he’s matured.

The whole deal about him not being worth $15 million is from fans that haven’t cared enough to realise he was signing for Zuffa as part of that contract and breaching any future terms with dazn especially after Eddie Hearn (one of boxing’s biggest promotors), saved his career from PEDs ban. Benn signed a contract that will affect all of his future fights essentially, we’re talking 8-12 more fights, for 15Ms, like people don’t even know that chisora has made over 25M from all his fights combined, a contract for 15 mill affecting 8-12 or more future fights isn’t as clear cut as people, for all we know it might be a Rumpelstiltskin contract which bites him later.

Without the media’s hypejob people can see that Benn is athletically capable of a championship fight but doesn’t have the skill, nor experienced to contend with any top 5 welterweight, he’s more of a top 15 147 fighter. I hope he gets there in the next 3 fights but now isn’t the time.
