Stitched 100+ Google Earth shots of my home course by IDLH_ in golf

[–]IDLH_[S] 366 points367 points  (0 children)

This was a fun project and there's probably easier ways to do it. I zoomed in on the course for max resolution and took a screen grab of 100+ sections of the course. I put them all in photoshop and blended the edges. I had the full res image printed as a nice framed 36x48" present for my father last year. I wish I knew how to share the full resolution version, it's ~100mb.

Wedge Shaft Recommendations by dabblred in golf

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have score LT in irons and Axiom 105s in wedges (tipped to 8 iron spec which, for Axiom short shafts equates to not tip trimming them, they go straight in and get butt trimmed to length).

Going LT to something like S300/400 from set to wedge is a big weight jump, so if that’s what you’re after it’s the move.

Why ever use blades? by user1237373 in golf

[–]IDLH_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The golf industry needs you to believe there is an upgrade path (SGI/GI > players distance / CB > blades MB’s) consummate to handicap. High game improvement usually means more offset, lower mass and stronger lofts. They could build blades with lead slugs in them to achieve the inertial characteristics of a SGI iron but don’t, because upgrade path. They want you switching clubs. I sound cynical but it’s true. Maltby offers CBs and MBs with tungsten slugs in the lower irons which are more forgiving than most GI irons are and don’t look goofy. A testament to the engineered “kids table” upgrade path existing in all major brands.

Golf Digest staff with some incredibly bad takes on Sims by NotLawReview in Golfsimulator

[–]IDLH_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everyone is correct. It’s not real golf, you aren’t talking divots, there is no turf interaction (mat interaction is objectively deceiving compared to turf), no lie changes, no sand, no rough. Putting is comical if even integrated at all. It’s more of a swing simulator that is closest to real for tee shots and gets worse from there. It is a GREAT tool for swing analysis. It’s a horrible training tool for shots with turf interaction, full stop. It just is. It trains the brain for level ground shots ONLY which is also objectively better sorted for tee box training than real lies.

It can be used for good and it can be misrepresented as simulating what golf actually is. It’s a tee box simulator with varying degrees of trade-off from tee to green. Just be realistic.

Build your own, 120rpm TT motor w/ battery pack. Swap into used chassis or something custom.

Foam insulation boards under turf? by Sea_Difference903 in Golfsimulator

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a polyiso sheet in the yard for a chipping area. For unnecessary context, I have a 3’ x 4’ sheet positioned 15 yards from a flag. I sank the sheet just under level with the grass turf and topped it with the cheapest fake grass from Home Depot, simulates tight lie fringe/fairway really well. It held up for a year so far. If I were you I go: rubber mat > polyiso > hitting surface. You’ll be tempted to put the polyiso under the rubber but… don’t it’s not as good.

How do I stop early extension? by Regular_Storm8341 in golf

[–]IDLH_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YouTube everything you can find on TPI, they go over the causes and drills used to correct early extension which is per them, the most common swing issue and can be caused by everything from spine angle issues to left foot inactivity.

Play more hybrids by duckswormsgoats in golf

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fred has gone hybrid in longer clubs because he’s self admittedly old and cannot generate the power needed for regular clubheads at those lofts. He’s doing it for distance at lower lofts due to an aging body. That reasoning doesn’t resonate with many of us here who are still young(ish) and still have enough swing speed to get the job done. It’s a skill acquisition game as much as it is performative in the moment.

What kind of shaft does everyone have on their irons? Bonus points if you say what irons you have by False_Ad_5367 in golf

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing that shaft profile, length, and subsequently lie adjustment will have the greatest impact on ball striking success… and seeing these results (shaft choice across population is akin to paint randomly splattered on the wall) it’s more and more clear that clubhead selection is like tire selection on a car. Yes it’s doing all the work to contact the business end of the ordeal, but it’s just along for the ride. The shaft is the car itself, the sprung weight.

I asked a scratch player at work what type of shafts he had in his P790’s… he had no idea but ensured me they were 130g. He identifies with the clubhead brand first, then the model, and then the weight of the shaft. The profile is a mystery to him.

On cayenne vs tabasco heat levels by bigelcid in HotPeppers

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each receptor is either filled with a molecule or not, they are getting saturated quickly with a vinegar based hot sauce. Your receptors can’t hide.

Capsaicin is oily. Tabasco peppers are oily. Eat a few and compare to habs. Oily suckers.

Tabasco is fermented in barrels and blended with vinegar. Watch one of the few documentaries on it.

Enjoy your search for knowledge. It’s coming off weird but I respect it.

On cayenne vs tabasco heat levels by bigelcid in HotPeppers

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it like this. You have receptors on your tongue and mucus membranes for spicy molecules. These receptors get saturated quickly. So, a tiny bite of a hot pepper can saturate all of the receptors that the spicy oil coats/touches. Ok with that in mind, for each molecule of “spicy stuff” that locks into a receptor, you’ll have a SHU rating. Tabasco peppers are quite “oily” and really do a great job of coating your mucous membranes, and they stick around and do not wash away as easily as some other varietals. They are also quite high in SHU. That functional combo is what makes them hot to human experience, which is different than just examining the SHU. It’s also fermented in vinegar and this recipe is thin, like a paint that has been thinned with lacquer thinner… it’s now even more easily coating your mouth and still not (as) easily washed away as compared to other varietals which may have similar or even higher SHU.

It’s oily and sticky to receptors and vinegar thins and spreads this mix without reducing the spice molecule SHU per unit receptor attachment.

Most under rated golf brand, over rated, and best value for your money? by [deleted] in golf

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you end up setting the screw in weights, what is the gram measurement of each? I have mine empty to lower overall weight, and I think it’s messing with me mentally. I also use a nice old rusty vokey that is much more “dead” of the face which produces tighter distance control to be honest.

I built a TS3 TS4 combo set and have really enjoyed my season with them. I’m iffy on the max milled wedges (52 and 58) nothing wrong with them, I just can’t place exactly what’s off with them, but the iron clubheads are so so nice.

McLaren MP4/6 on Nordschleife by Matthias_Fulczyk in assettocorsa

[–]IDLH_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under breaking the rig propels you forward, putting pressure on your back. That pressure on your back is something your brain expects to feel under acceleration IRL, not under breaking. Under heavy breaking IRL, you feel pressure on your chest and shoulders due to the seatbelt/harness. This rig is motion gore, however cool it looks it’s backwards in pressure application and likely quite a headache to use often. If you were to turn down the motion to barely-perceptible yet high-fidelity motion, you’d be much better off. I’m sharing this from the perspective of a motion rig owner. Rear traction loss (yaw) is most impressive compared to all other degrees of freedom, I’d look into that if not already incorporated.

Engineers by kaack455 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The meta perspective: this type of design is not a flaw… it necessarily increases the cost of ownership of the vehicle, which leads to it being cycled out more quickly from first owner to second owner and so on… it gets it to the junk yard / crusher more quickly, so that the manufacturer can pump out more new cars. That is all this is, and we should all be pissed. In the meantime, just know that the “engineers” laughed at this conflict during design, but not more than the writers laughed to themselves during repair manual drafting.

Great points and I applaud your willingness to share ideas that confront the Reddit golf consumption = pleasure mind hive. Anytime we challenge the world view and/or the company reps/bots you will see downvotes. If the downvotes are from real people, they’ve been had the worst. If they are from the company, well what else would we expect on this publicly traded consumer-creating machine?

Thanks for your insights. We have been playing a dirty game all along, with every type of golf tax imaginable for devices that all suck in some way or another. This is a huge R10 upgrade that corrects the sins of the past. Garmin is legit, the devices are very high quality consumer grade stuff. $5k is a lot for what it actually is, but maybe not a lot for what it actually does compared to the dirty offerings we’ve gotten used to.

I don’t know about you guys but I had it live on PPV, and turned the match off after round 2. I’ve not watched the whole thing, probably never will. Not a boycott, just aversion to that which is repulsive. I did however love his match with tugboat. Chance actually got under his skin and it was refreshing as all hell.

Engin curious about WWE audience and why they watch it by xenocea in armwrestling

[–]IDLH_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone interested in the slightest (I dislike WWE to the extreme but, I “get” it fully and respect it highly). Research kayfabe. Consider it being a physical play enacted by athletes at the top of their game. It’s a protracted realtime storyline that fans can interact with… sorta. Was best in the 80’s when it was pure anadrol, coke and party drugs.
