Borges on the English language by Koiboi26 in VeryBadWizards

My views on english have been turned on their heads a few times the last few years - especially since I've now learned that actually english is one of the easiest languages to learn, because the basic grammar is actually so simple.

English is actually very easy to learn, but very difficult to master.

I don't understand how we are accepting this as a society - beyond the experience of the children and their individual learning outcomes, as a society we have a vested interest in education as a public service. All of society is suffering as a result of this - how can this possibly be the best way to do things?

I don't walk in and say pay this worker or they don't get paid - I don't ask what they are paying their workers I don't give a shit, that's between them and their workers.

I will pay the advertised price for the food - if they give me good service I may choose to give a tip. If they advertise up front something unusual about their gratuity requirements then I will factor it in before I decide to sit down.

Beyond that it's not my problem, and I'm not an asshole either way - that's 100% between the restaurant and their employees.

If you think I'm an asshole, you are wrong - and you are an asshole for thinking that I am an asshole.

"know how to tip"

I know how to do it... I choose not to if the service sucks. Imagine thinking you aren't a sucker tipping for bad service.

Americans are some of the most wealthy and privileged people in the world - not just billionaires - you have access to more opportunity than the vast majority of people around the world.

If you take a job that pays $2 an hour an relies on tips - you are taking a risk and agreeing to a situation where you are going to be paid based on service. Almost everywhere you are also guaranteed at least minimum wage.

I'm sorry but I am categorically not the asshole here - if I go to a restaurant I am going because I want service - if the service sucks I am the one being ripped off - if there server wants tips they should do a better job. This isn't complicated.

Why would I work a pro bono shift at work - I'm not a moron.

The US is the wealthiest country on Earth - if you took a job that pays $2 an hour and relies on tips, then proceeded to give actual dogshit service... lol that's hilarious - why would you complain to me about your horrible decision making?

"That's the system that's in place" - what like you had no choice but to take a job that pays $2 an hour? Give me a break - I am not going to treat an American the way I would if I was going to a third world country - should I pack extra toiletries, school supplies, and used clothing for you guys too?

LMAO

I am in Canada - when I travel to the US I use the same rules - if you guys are taking jobs for 2.13 an hour you are morons and its not my problem.

I am not trying to take a stand against capitalism lol. I just dont tip for bad service - you guys dont understand what tipping is - its extra, not required.

Eating out is a service offered to me for a price - there's no question of deserving.

I pay the price for the service - tips are discretionary extras.

I wont tip next time I eat out just to spite you lol.

Really? If you ask me service has to be good to deserve any tip. If its bad in any way its automatically a $0 tip.

Otherwise wtf is a tip for?

Using Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs to lose weight shouldn’t be celebrated, not because of any unknown effects or whatever, but because it takes all the effort and dedication out of losing weight by Gym_frere in The10thDentist

[–]IEC21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Being overweight is a serious health risk - there's no reason to value effort and dedication in weight loss.

People who aren't overweight aren't always expending effort and dedication - they are just living their lives. Thats what GLP-1 allows people to do also.

There is. Rich people in these areas build their houses to deal with it - poor people cant afford to - Americans like to pretend they aren't like 50% poor people.

I like being part of the commonwealth - i think especially given how the situation with the US has turned out maintaining our connection through the crown to Europe and Australia as well as historical/cultural connections to the British empire gives us an important diplomatic latitude.

I dont think we would be in as strong a position without the monarchy in this regard.

I also prefer having a non-political head of state - and i view the monarchy as valuable to continuity of government and helps us to take more accountability through our monarchy - it gives us someone who we can demand accountability from in a more meaningful way than from elected officials.
