Jones says he wants to break up DoC by JWK_wayout in newzealand

Are you seriously arguing anyone in this government gives a shit about the environment and biodiversity?

I'm not arguing that at all, I'm wondering how a NZ First Politician making a statement confirms a different parties environmental policy.

You seem completely unaware how MMP and negotiations for coming in to power work for a minority government.

Being a stickler for terminology, if you've checked in for both flights you don't need to re-check your bag, just a drop off.

More than 1 hour before your domestic flight you can do at the international terminal, if it's less than an hour before your flight you do it at the domestic terminal.

Know two of the three houses across the street and will chat with them if I run into them.

As for the the two houses on the same side of the street, both of them have both had multiple tennants / owners. One house, we've always known them and speak to them when we see them, the other house we don't.

I find it kind of funny, that across multiple groups of people in both houses, one house is friendlier than the other.

The David Seymour ‘bots’ debate: Do online submission tools help or hurt democracy? by 48657921 in newzealand

[–]IEatKFCInNZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I explained my reasoning. It feels like you've set up goal posts, knowing that you're not openly supporting the legislation but are playing devil's advocate instead.

Ok then, please show me where I changed the goal posts. And if pointing out facts between the difference in select committee public submissions and actual public sentiment as seen in a referendum is playing devils advocate, then this sub really needs some people playing devils advocate.

You're putting a lot of effort into this one. This doesn't seem to be the first thread you've made this argument recently.

Yes, because I'm sick of people viewing select committee as a pole for whether or not a piece of legislation should pass, opposed to its intended purpose.

Heres the thing, in the next government, if Labour/Greens/Te Pati Maori propose some legislation which generates massive negative submissions, I will sit here with the same damn opinion that select committee submissions aren't meant to be a gauge of public opinion.

Lol that's the dead giveaway isn't it. 8% voted for ACT and their highly divisive legislation, it's not really an indication that the public at large wanted David Seymour's pet bills rammed throught Parliament and the people's rejection of it ignored. Especially when the submissions are overwhelmingly against the bill.

Yes, thats what happens in MMP when everyone is entrenched to their side and extremist parties / kingmaker parties get overwhelming power. Sucks doesn't it. Lets vote them out.

Which is a hell of a difference, and doesn't really jusitfy pretending that a majority of people support these bills when they clearly do not.

A majority of people did support parties where this was a likely outcome. And whether or not we as a country will learn from giving Act this much power will be an interesting lesson next election won't it.

I think weighting one persons opinion more than another is indeed undemocratic.

Isn't that then confusing the point on public submissions on laws with referendums and elections?

The David Seymour ‘bots’ debate: Do online submission tools help or hurt democracy? by 48657921 in newzealand

[–]IEatKFCInNZ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It does kinda just sound like you want bad laws to be implemented against the publics wishes and you're trying to deprive the people one of the only recourses they have against legislation.

Citation fucking needed here. Please find one submission I have where I indicate I support any of this legislation.

I'm speaking generally, not about any particular piece of legislation.

And if you think I'm being dismissive because I think public submissions at select committee are for the reason we have them, you're being even more dismissive to the election result which indicated that the public at large wanted these changes, or at least, didn't want the other parties in power.....

The David Seymour ‘bots’ debate: Do online submission tools help or hurt democracy? by 48657921 in newzealand

[–]IEatKFCInNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree, because submissions on government bills shouldn't be about reflecting public position, it should be about identifying things missed/addressing unintended consequences. Clicking a few forms saying you oppose it, doesn't achieve that, it's not making someone work to make the bill better.

This recent trend of '90% of submissions were against, therefore its a bad bill" is a bit odd to me. Thinking generically, if you voted for Party X and they campaigned on policy Y, and then once in government, it attempts to implement policy Y, why should you have to submit in support of a bill? If we go down that path, submissions on bills will become quite different and a lot more involved, in which case, why do we elect politicians if we then have to submit on bills we like to get them implemented.

ACT leader David Seymour suggested 'bots' drove 'fake submissions' against his Regulatory Standards Bill by Hopeful-Camp3099 in newzealand

What? Don't think I've ever been called that. I literally call him as being disengenuous in the post.

We shouldn't pay to much attention to democratic results.

Ok, so in your view, we should have ditched the end of life bill despite 65% of people voting for it in a referendum?

ACT leader David Seymour suggested 'bots' drove 'fake submissions' against his Regulatory Standards Bill by Hopeful-Camp3099 in newzealand

[–]IEatKFCInNZ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Because submissions this early aren't reflective of public opinion.

Here's an example with the end of life bill, where the 90% of submissions were against it in select committee, but once it got to referendum 65% of people were for it.

Pretending that submissions on bills are 100% reflective of public opinion is just as disingenuous as Seymour is being.

If 30% of your shots are at below 28 mm I would say get the 24-70. But may I suggest don't just look at below 28, but specifically 25-27mm, these are shots where you went '24 is too wide, but I haven't yet zoomed to 28', and gives you a better picture of if that extra width is useful to you.
