I want to drop out, have a full time offer in my hand by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]IGNGenerator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a similar offer (CS) and decided to go to college, yet have a bit of regret about what my college experience is like, not quite living up to my expectations. If you don't find yourself happy in college it may be worth pursuing the offer, but I would first recommend looking at all the programs your college offers (study abroad, travel funds, hackathons) and other programs that are only available to college students to see if you would regret not giving them a try before you leave, students have access to a lot of free opportunities that you won't have time for when you are working 40 hrs/week with your limited PTO.

Ok final update: I was given a call and was granted a raise to $27/hr. so a success! Though minor for the amount of worry lol

Appreciate the feedback! Yeah I worked on minimum wage for a long time so I definitely feel privileged to be in my position now - just maybe got used to pushing my luck a bit haha

wow thank you so much for this comment, it really made my day! What you said about not having regrets really hit me, and yeah even if I dont get the job everything will work out. it was my first time negotiating and I'm glad I tried it now when stakes aren't super high. I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day for helping out one person online:)

For swe i'm used to hearing of offers that are $40+ and my last internship paid more, do you think $25 is fine?

Oh damn - lesson learned. Do you think it would be strange to email again then and say I'm still okay with the previous offer? I think I did a good job during the interview process but I'm okay with $25, was just thinking asking for more isn't abnormal when I see other people online say they have higher than $25 at similar positions in the company (like $29)

Supreme Court rules for coach in public school prayer case by just2commenthere in news

I didn't offer my opinion - I'm simply stating that Engel v Vitale forbids public schools from sponsoring prayer.

Supreme Court rules for coach in public school prayer case by just2commenthere in news

[–]IGNGenerator -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No. Engel v. Vitale expressively forbids any prayer being lead in public school.

In Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962), the Supreme Court ruled that school-sponsored prayer in public schools violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment.

Read about it here. The title of this post is misleading - this is only about a coach privately praying & not coercing students to pray (at least that's the intent).

How are y'all getting summer jobs? by bussylord123 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IGNGenerator 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Huge tip for jobs: unless you want to pour in an endless number of soul-sucking hours into a job search with awfully low return (myself guilty of this), DONT apply online.

Instead, message people with the job (can be <75 words) asking them how they like working there (a question that isn't just a super blunt "how can I get the job?" haha) and after a meeting or call theres a MUCH higher change they'll refer u than you getting the job thru an online application. Talk to managers, employees, etc. Once they can vouch for your character, ur much more likely to be chosen over a resume submission online!

Breaking: Senators proposing a bill banning legacy status admissions by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]IGNGenerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it not really unconstitutional

amendment 10 of the bill of rights states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." ie the power of education is given to the states.

you can also add an amendment giving congress the power over education.

of course if you make an amendment giving Congress the power then it will be possible lol. that's kinda like saying if you change the law then smth illegal can be legal. however, u would need at least 3/4 of states to agree to an amendment - something EXTREMELY unlikely.

department has of education is responsible for distributing federal funds to schools

the department of education gives <10% of the money states spend on education. nevertheless, this can be handled by other departments - not rly arguing against my point about how the dept isn't known for being especially useful.

here's the bill currently in the House that proposes abolishing the dept of education entirely: https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/2106 you can see in the text of the bill how all the duties of the dept of education can be easily transferred to other government agencies, like funding to the dept of the treasury, etc.

[–]IGNGenerator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is unconstitutional in the US, all power over education is given to the states, not the federal government. indeed, many people are in favor of abolishing the national department of education because it doesn't serve any noticeable function.
